A vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office Web Apps, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

1) An error within Microsoft Word when handling certain RTF-formatted data can be exploited to corrupt memory.

Note: Reportedly, this vulnerability is currently actively exploited in the wild in limited targeted attacks.

2) An error within Microsoft Office File Format Converter when handling certain files can be exploited to corrupt memory.

3) An error within Microsoft Word when handling certain files can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow.

Successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities #1 and #3 allows execution of arbitrary code.

Secunia PSI is showing a red alert warning on my PC for Word 2003 even though Security Update for Word 2003 (KB2878303) was applied on 9/4/14.

Is it showing a Vulnerability or End of Life notification?

It should be showing End of Life.

It says end-of-life. The warning shows red and "currently being exploited", even though the patch released on 8April has been successfully installed.

Nick,
That could well be correct - I assume Secunia are pointing to this:

Maurice

The advisory displayed is Secunia Advisory SA57577, which is also listed on the page your link above goes to. The advisory is dated 25March2014, and the MS update on 8April appears to me to have addresses the vulnerabilities. Am I wrong about this?

The vulnerabilities are also listed as affecting Word 2007, however I have another PC with Word 2007 and Secunia is showing Word as patched by the 8April update with a green threat rating.

Nick,
Your score has been increased by 16 - I hit the wrong button to reply!!!!

I cannot really answer your query - I merely pointed out that there appears to be an outstanding issue or the Secunia data base needs correction. It does appear odd that 2003 appears to show a different vulnerability status.

My Version of Office is showing as updated & secure - can you show us a screen shot of what you can see for Office or does it look like this against your Office items?
