John

1. Open PSI>Scan results.

2. Against the programme marked as vulnerable is a + sign to the left of it.

3. Click that & it will reveal DETECTED INSTANCES.

4. Below that are two yellow folders. Click the one WITHOUT a red dot.

5. That will open Windows Explorer & you will be able to see the vulnerable file.
C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Appli cat ion\chrome.exe, version: 22.0.1229.94

6. Right click on that file & select delete.

7. Carry out a full PSI scan & all should be in order.

Hi ,

Just a minor point is that Windows Explorer should display both the current and old version "folders" (with the old version blue highlighted) ; the old folder should be deleted . The Chrome .exe file is usually shown separately and should not be deleted ; sometimes there is a second .exe_old version displayed which can be deleted .

It should be noted that the old version that is left behind is "technically" not available to the bad guys :ie: it is left in case a developer requires it , and in fact should be deleted automatically at the next update . Obviously it must go to enable the PSI to give you a green score .

Hope that helps .

Anthony

Hello Maurice,
Hello Anthony,

Thank you both very much for your prompt and comprehensive reply. I followed your instructions but when clicking on the yellow folder without the red dot it brought up seven entries as below :-

Name Date modified Type Size

22.01229.94 7.11.2012 ( Empty) File Folder
Dictionaries 23.09.2012 ( en-us-2-3bdic) File Folder
logo chrome .exe 10.10.2012 Application 1,211 KB
debug.log 05.06.2014 Text Document 1 KB
First Run 23.09.2012 File 0 KB
master_preferences 23.09.2012 File 1 KB
VisualElementsManifes 12.10.2012 XML Document 1 KB

Can I right click and delete all or some of these files ?
Sorry for the extra question but I am unsure what I can delete safely.
Thanks again.
.John.

John,
It looks to me like you can delete the lot.

That said, I do not use anything Google/Doubleclick so perhaps best to wait for Anthony to confirm.

Hello John ,

The latest/secure "Stable" version of Chrome is 35.0.1916.114 .

It would help to know which folders/files are displayed by Windows Explorer in your folder

C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Applicat ion\....

EDIT: it is possible that 35.xxx is now installed in a C:\ProgramFiles\Google\... folder .

You will obviously have to keep the folder of 35.0.1916.1114 and one verion of (logo) chrome.exe ; if you double click it , it should only open the latest version installed .

The folder : 22.01229.94 7.11.2012 ( Empty) File Folder

is probably the only folder actually causing the PSI to react and is probably not empty if you doubleclick it .

It would also be normal to have one each of :ie: the last installed version of :-

Dictionaries 23.09.2012 ( en-us-2-3bdic) File Folder
debug.log 05.06.2014 Text Document 1 KB
master_preferences 23.09.2012 File 1 KB
VisualElementsManifes 12.10.2012 XML Document 1 KB

Does that make it clearer??

Getting late here ,so may not get back 'til tomorrow :(( you are not at risk if you have Stable 35.xxxx installed .

Anthony

Hello Anthony, Hopefully I have harvested the required information.
Google chrome main page "help" shows I have latest version 35.0.1916.114.
Windows Explorer/ Application- files are all dated 2014 except dictionaries 2013 and master preferences 17/11/2012.(contains the words "distribution" make Chrome default.)
Chrome logo. dated 2014. 841 KB
Window that shows when I click on the"yellow without red dot" tells me after clicking on 22.01229.947.11.2012 file folder that it is indeed empty.(Is it possible for Secunia to react to an empty folder.?)
double clicking on chrome logo file in same window does not bring up any contents except at bottom of same screen shows 22/9/2012 ( 1.8 MB)
First Run entry shows "0" bytes in "Downloads.

It is so kind of you to go to all this trouble on my behalf many people would not bother!
If I am taking up too much of your time please say so I will quite understand.
Very Best Regards,
John.

Hello John ,

Please excuse the delay ; yet another long holiday weekend over here (Pentecost) and was urgently called up for animal surveillance .

Judging from what you say , you appear to have a full 35.xx folder in working order and the PSI is (correctly) picking out the very old files left behind in the 22.xx as EOL ; one or more of them is triggering the PSI , so you can go ahead and delete all the 22.x files :ie:-

22.01229.94 7.11.2012 ( Empty) File Folder
Dictionaries 23.09.2012 ( en-us-2-3bdic) File Folder
logo chrome .exe 10.10.2012 Application 1,211 KB
debug.log 05.06.2014 Text Document 1 KB
First Run 23.09.2012 File 0 KB
master_preferences 23.09.2012 File 1 KB
VisualElementsManifes 12.10.2012 XML Document 1 KB

Run a full scan and you should be clean and green .

Chrome is not essential to the correct running of your system and can always be reinstalled , although , as I'm sure you know , the best system is to ensure the "auto-update" is working correctly via "About Google Chrome" in the right hand drop down menu .

EDIT: I mention this as I am showing a new version of 35.xx today . Cancel that !! Server problem atm !!

Let us know if you have any other problems .

Take care

Anthony

Hello Anthony,
Thanks to your kind help the score has now increased to 98%.Not yet a green light because like others I am left with Macrovision Update Service Active X control.Looks like the only way is to rename the file if I can find it!Does this action meet with your approval from the security point of view?
My other computer which I bought secondhand has also increased its score to 96% due to the same treatment you recommended regarding Google Chrome. 96% because the previous owner used Facebook, and an early version of Facebook Photo Uploader does not appear in the uninstall
program list.I only knew about it when Secunia picked it up.
However thank you once again for the benefit of your knowledge, as this has greatly improved the situation.
Best Regards,
John.

Hello Maurice,
The file information has gone in but under a NEW thread with the same heading.
Something went sadly wrong as it has appeared at least 12 times!
I have tried to delete it but cannot.
I wish I could hide!

John.
P.S. Hopefully someone can remove the excessive entries.

John,
No problem. I have extracted the detail to this thread & removed the other one.

Hello Maurice,
Thanks for your further info
. Strange, from refusing to put the file information in it now seems to have put it in many times!
However the information is there so I dare not try to change it.

John..

John,
No problem. OK now you have identified where the file is we can fix the problem.

If you have closed down the Command Prompt please go through the sequence (above) again until you get to here:

https://1ncuig.bn1.livefilestore.com/y2pRzCWq8rywh...

At the BLINKING CURSOR type this rename "isusweb.dll" "isusweb.dll.old"

Please make sure you type it EXACTLY as written

Click the return key then exit the Command Prompt. A full PSI rescan should not show that file as an issue.

Hello Maurice,
I have entered it exactly as written I assume I needed to type the word rename together with all the inverted commas
IN the Command Prompt screen the full entry reads :
25/7/2002 18;05 172,032 isusweb.dll

I have entered it twice once using the enter key and the second time using the return key but it comes back with the message: not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.

Maurice,
I have repeated the same functions on my other computer, with exactly the same result:-
i.e. not recognized as an internal.........etc.

the only difference being the full entry was:-
16\2\2005 16:15 401,408 isusweb.dll

I also notice that instructions from "rick.tsaara" 24\2\2010 regarding " How to remove old facebook photo uploader " . says in the Command Prompt window . "Change directory to the file location and then delete the file using DEL command."

He does not say exactly what to type to do this & does not make it clear whether to type the DEL command or alternatively use the keyboard keys (Delete) in the center batch of keys or the Del key at the bottom of the numeric key pad.
I was interested in that thread as I see there are two photo uploader files shown in the Command Prompt window of my other computer which Secunia is picking up on as "End of Life"

Sorry for the extra work I seem to be causing.

John.

John,
You really are no bother - some things do take time.

The syntax is more or less the same - a rename rather than delete is sometimes better in that you can reverse a rename.

I have just done a few more tests. Providing you are following the instructions to the letter it should work.

That said, at the blinking cursor this time try this:

rename isusweb.dll isusweb.dll.old

please double check you have the single spaces and dots in the right place.

rename (space)isusweb(dot)dll(space)isusweb(dot)dll(dot)o ld

Hello Maurice,
The green light at last.

Computer (1)=100%
Computer (2) now up to 98%

Thank you for your perseverance. I am so pleased that both of us have seen the green light at last!.

I presume I can now go ahead and repeat the same actions to RENAME the two photo uploaders.
assuming that they both refer to" Facebook". I take heart from the fact that you say if renamed proves to be an error the action can be reversed.

I am most grateful to you.

Best regards,
John.

Hello Anthony,
Hello Maurice,

Thank you both for your dedication to this task.
I just wish I had a deeper understanding of computers then I would not have to trouble others.

However I find I learn something every time I switch one on.
I am more adept at taking them apart and hopefully improving their performance.
As they truly say " the more you know, the more you know how little you know!" It certainly applies to me!!

Thank you both once again.
Best regards,

John.

Hello again Maurice,
I am pleased to report that thanks to your expert tuition "Secunia" is now showing 100% on BOTH computers.
I renamed the two Facebook files as per your FIRST tried solution and it worked immediately after the SECOND tried solution did not work.It seems to be if one solution does not work the other one does.
I mention this here as it will encourage others who are following this thread to try BOTH of your solutions.
The two Facebook files were:-
"ImageUploader4.ocx"
"PhotoUploader5.ocx"
Hope this helps as "Facebook" end of life" files seem to be a widespread problem

Thank you for the information.
Very difficult, as I think you efforts were of equal merit.
However I will go with your generous suggestion.
