I just installed Secunia a week ago, great program by the way.

After an advance scan, Secunia tells me that my Shockwave Player v8.5.1.102 is at its "End-Of-Life stage with "No direct download link available". What does this actually mean?

Will there be an update/patch available soon? OR
Because its at its End-of-life stage, no update/patch will be available at all, therefore, do I need to uninstall Shockwave Plater???

Also, under PSI SETTINGS: *Start The Secunia PSI On Boot and *Enable Program Monitoring, If I check these 2 options, will my pc boot time increase in time?

Thanks

U have a very old version. Uninstall it - reboot - install latest player from here;
http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

End of life means the vendor has stopped supporting it & no updates/upgrades will be made available.

There is not a lrge increase in start up time.

Hi, Maurice I uninstalled Shockwave Player then rebooted, then installed Shockwave player via the link you sent me, I then rebooted again and did another Secunia scan and I am still getting the same result - End-Of-Life program for Shockwave polayer v8.5.1.102.

Why has it not updated?

PS; Is Shockwave Player really necessary to have? If I uninstall it, will I see a difference when viewing certain pages?

Thanks

It is a video type thing - I have not got it installed because I avoid Adobe bloatware where possible - plenty of free VLC players if U ever have a need.

What was the path to the remaining shockwave?
To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, please follow there guidelines using the
ADVANCED interface:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
* Click on the + sign of the programme to “expand’ it.
* Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file.

I cannot delete this file. I right click on the file name but I do not get any options. Nothing happens!

By the way, by deleting this file, will it delete one component of Shockwave or the whole lot?

In this particular instance it would have just deleted the offending file from version 8.

To clear it all up I would.
Uninstall all Adobe SHOCKWAVE entries using add/remove.
Reboot - run secunia - any remnants left?
If so,download this tool.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Once U open the programme look for any reference to Adobe Shockwave. If U find any highlight them & click remove.

Rerun Secunia. With luck there should be no insecurities.
If U want to reinstall Shockwave the link is here:
http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

After removal of Shockwave Player via Add/Remove, and using ccleaner to get rid of old regestry files and then a reboot, I still get the same result. So now Shochwave Player is not completely removed from my pc.

This removal tool recommends me not to use it if I have Microsoft office installed. I do have Microsoft Office installed. I am a little hesitant to use this removal tool now, as it says it could remove some Microsoft Office components. Any other suggestions?

Will it help if I install a similar program to Shockwave Player instead? If so, which program do you recommend?

It will not remove anything other than Shockwave if used as described. That said, U are wise not to use a tool that U feel uncomfortable with.

We need to get rid of the insecurity first.

Try this:

Go to Start>SEARCH>type in c:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Shockwave8\SwInit.exe

Once the file is found delete it from there.

If the search does not find it just type in Shockwave & try again until U find the offending file

Only delete the 3 clearly marked Shockwave.

The cc documents are saved versions of a registry clean up U have done with CCleaner & will be deleted as & when U delete that file.

Reboot - rescan & I think U should be clear.

I did as you asked and all is perfect now. No more End-Of -Life programs.

Thank you Maurice!

Ps: as I don't have Shockwave anymore, do I need to install an updated version, or a similar program from another vendor, or not even bother with these types of programs. What do you recommend I do? Can I live without Shockwave and the like?

I am delighted we got there in the end without using a tool U felt uncomfotable using. I hope others read this thread because U have, in my humble opinion, got it absolutely right - leave cleaning tools well alone if in any doubt on the outcome of usage. There are always alternatives to the quick fix.

To your final question. I have no real reason to have Shockwave installed & consider most things Adobe complete bloatware. That should not prevent U from reinstalling the latest version.

U may wish to post a new thread asking for a second opinion. A little outside the remit of the Secunia forum but there are many helpful people out there who deal in this subject.

Happy Easter

In that case I wont install Shockwave unless I see a dramatic difference while browsing.

If I have any problems in the future, I know who to ask

Thanks again Maurice
