I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to ask this, but it involves upgrading patches etc. I downloaded a program called DriveCure from ParetoLogic that checks for any outdated driver/software on your pc. I have just ran a scan from DriveCure and it tells me that I have 26 outdated drivers that need to be updated. I have not yet installed these updates as I like to know from anyone who has used this program or is familiar with it. Is this program safe to use, or will it do irreversible damage to my pc? The DriveCure version I have is 1.3 My pc is 5 years old and I am running Windows Home Edition (sp3) So can anyone give me the thumbs up for this program? Also, are there any negatives to DriveCure that I should know about? Thanks -- Win 7 sp1 64bit Firefox 15.01 |

I have not used the program mentioned but a similar one called Driver Detective which told me I had 34 out of date drivers. So I paid for the program and indeed it did update 2 drivers but then the next 3 it said were out of date were not and the download and install failed. In the end I complained, uninstalled the program and obtained a refund, after a number of emails from them telling me I didn't know what I was doing. May I suggest you try the Driver Scanner from PC Pitstop, to download any drivers you do have to subscribe about $30 but it is for 12 months. U need to be a little careful updating drivers. Unlike insecurities which do require fixing that is not the same with drivers. Many would argue that "if it ain't broke don't fix it". There are many of this type of programme on offer - DriversHQ (Driver Detective) - PC Pitstop (Driver Alert) CNet (Version Tracker Pro) to name but a few. They tend to charge an annual fee of around $30. All they are is a convenience programme. Drivers if required can be downloaded from the various vendor sites free of charge. I personally would never allow this type of programme to interrogate my system & then install drivers. I have tested the 3 programmes mentioned above today on my laptop. False positives abound particularly with my ATI graphics & Dymo Labelwriter Printer. The results do not match those offered by the vendor & in the case of printer they are identifying the wrong model. In my view all 3 tested were a complete waste of money. Very wise in my view. I am not sure if U have another programme installed called FileHippo? This little freebie is helpful in reminding U if programme vendors update their programmes. It compliments PSI in that it notifies U of all types of update whereas PSI is only interested in security issues. | I concur with Maurice's information and I use Filehippo's UpdateChecker and I like watching it work when its eyes pop open checking for me. Today it found that there was an update to Defraggler that is an application that I use occasionally to defrag files that I use frequently as that speeds up its loading. |
