Hi

Did the PSI state that your OS was removed? (With the yellow "balloon messages")

Does it appear in the insecure/secure tab?

Working fine on my systems but I did not see the Added Status Indicator when updating?

(unknown source)
Added Status Indicator
A status indicator has been added to the bottom of the Secunia PSI it informs you about what the Secunia PSI is currently doing, along with general recommendations for improved usage of your Secunia PSI installation.

I've always been very pleased with PSI. It's become one of my primary resources for keeping my pc secure. It's also a program I highly recommend to everyone I speak with.

My only feedback, so far, is asking if there's any plans to add the same 'direct access' feature for the secure browsing that the end-of-life and insecure tabs have.

Hello,

A/ I have installed the new version.
First, I think there was a problem : the software seems to be blocked, and doesn't respond.
When I tried to go on the forum the delay was also very long.
But the soft runs

B/ I think it would be good to add the location of a software when it is not in Program files.
Indeed, for instance , I have Firefox in Program files but also in another place for testing an USB key ( the Liberkey can be run on the hard disk C)

I have run 1.0.0.6 installer direct and it has removed 1.0.0.5 & put itself in place & is up to speed.
FYI The solution down load button for Adobe Reader does not work in my Firefox v3.0.10. I have gone to Adobe v9.1.2.82 via the update link in the help file. Rescan showed the update straight away , unlike all the previous update problems of 9.1.0/9.1.1.
Keep us smiling:-o))
PS: I'm not sure I like your new Status bar saying that I'm "idle" !! - even if it's true.

I've downloaded the 1.0.0.6 beta several times, but each time I try to install it I get an error message saying that it's not a valid Win32 application.

EDIT: Disregard. I discovered that PC Doctor was blocking the installer, identifying it as a Trojan.BHO. After unblocking it, the beta installed properly and is running normally.

It named Win Xp in the yellow balloon.
However after opening up this time a balloon indicated another new version which I installed and is showing as 1.0.0.7.
With installation complete it then gave a balloon indicating that XP had been found

My curiousity extends to the fact that although programs have been eliminated it still shows necessary updates required. I find it ineffectual to think I require updates for programs I no longer use. Please advise.

If you decided to not use some prog's,and PSI still indicate as insecure
maybe you have to remove programs complitely by using the add-remove and using a cleaning programe like ccleaner & wise registery cleaner to get rid of the remnants, then rescan with PSI.
I hope this will help.Good Luck
N.B: those 2 cleaning prog's are free

Hello,

I have installed 1.0.0.7
I have updated Adobe
All is OK
Yet, at the beginning, Secunia is waiting 2 minutes (and not 10 seconds) to show its windows.

Good bye

Wow ! What happened to 6 - I hope she's not gone just because she called me idle !!
Very quick install of 7 over 6 - the automatic scan initiated and then told me that XP Home Edition had been patched ( in the yellow balloon over the tray icon ).
Am at a loss , so am going to have a glass of wine and wait to see if 7 hangs around longer !!
FYI it does seem slow to open &/or update the GUI

Hi Morten
Installation was a breeze and picked up several things that needed to be done although the previous version gave me 100% - well done. It also picked up P/Point Viewer in Office 2007.
According to Windows update this is already up to date on my computer..any ideas please?
Thanks

Hi, I received the Update Message in my Secunia regarding the Beta 1.0.0.5 a week or two ago and loaded and have been running it quite satisfactorily till now. Today I noticed that you had an Update to 1.0.0.7 and downloaded and have spent a good deal of time today trying to get it to run.

It performed the Uninstall & Reinstall ok but, when attempting to run following installation it would sit on the screen attempting to make the connection for maybe 20 minutes before telling me that I needed to allow it through my Firewall. I have attempted to reinstall several times since, all attempts have had the same response except on one occasion when I turned off both my Firewall and Spyware while scanning. But it reached a point during the scanning (I think while it was scanning my files) when it just bombed out and refused to go any further.

I am not quite sure how I have managed to get back to reloading and using the latest stable release version (1.0.0.4) but here I am. So I guess I now just wait until things progress through the Beta to take-up a more stable version.

I found the Browser Add-ons scan useful in the earlier Beta and am looking forward to being able to use that again.

I think the only thing that I have done recently between the two Beta Versions that may have affected the workings is to take the June 09 MS Updates which I did yesterday. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 on an IBM T42 Notebook.

Good Luck with your progress, I find Secunia to be an extremely valuable and useful resource that I would no longer want to be without...

Not sure what criteria you use to identify browsers but PSI (1.0.0.7) is not picking up Opera 10 Beta (10.0.1551.0) which I am running in parallel to the latest production version of Opera 9 (9.64.10487.0).

The Google Chrome 'anomoly' which I reported here:

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/202...

is unchanged.

PSI does not report on updates made by vendors with cosmetic or bug fixes nor does it report on Beta or RC releases and never has.

Many users of the Forum use a dual approach and have a general updater installed like FileHippo to notify them of these changes.

My Office 2007 is fully patched. Do your versions match mine?

Word 12.0.6504.5000
Excel 12.0.6504.5001
Powerpoint 12.0.6500.5000

I have renamed PowerPoint viewer old - functionally is not affected. I am currently awaiting a reply from Microsoft asking why Office users require this file.

I've noticed that I've 'lost' some end-of-life programs with this new beta release. For instance, Microsoft Word 97 no longer appears as an end-of-life program.

1. Opera is a browser so your comment re 'cosmetic or bug fixes' doesn't really apply given the new 'browser security' section of PSI (it would not be sensible to create the impression that a browser is secure because it is not listed). Also once an application is listed as being insecure I would have thought it has to remain in the database given that at any time in the future an old insecure version might be installed/restored even if the latest current version only has cosmetic/'zero security impact' changes in recent releases.

2. No beta's? Better remove Google Chrome then! ;-)

3. My contributions to this forum are *not* enhancement requests or complaints. They are just observations in a beta test environment for Secunia to take on board or ignore as they wish.

My 'insecure browsers' (as near as I can tell) are only on my D drive - in an old backup file, that was created before my Vista was reloaded. I haven't resolved, how/what I can retrieve, from the backup!

You can set PSI to exclude files and drives from being scanned. If you click the 'settings' tab, at the bottom of the page will be the area for setting files and locations to ignore from being scanned.

I see several people have found a problem with the Beta and Office 2007 Power Point - it would be nice to get a solution is there is one please?
I agree with you Heikwith...several other MS files also came up as out of date. However I downloaded using secunia as the link to MS and updated all EXCEPT the Power Point Viewer - which MS says is Ok on my machine.
Isn't MS wonderful?
Especially Vista 64. I will update to 7 when it is available and if that is not better than XP then I am going to get a MAC
I have had enough of MS

I downloaded the version 1.0.0.5 a couple of weeks ago, but now when I go to run the 1.0.0.7, I get a red x and the window says c:\users\alice\app data\local\Microsoft\windows\temporary internet files\content.IE5\NR4T6UIW\PSIsetupBeta[1].exe is not a valid Win32 application. I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic SP2, 32 bit, with Internet Explorer 8. Perhaps I have to uninstall the older version first? I use McAfee security suite, Windows Defender, Ad Aware, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Using XP pro on Acer eMachine
Intel Pentium Dual Core
1GB RAM
Using the Beta 7 in Advanced Mode

1. When I installed PSI Beta 7 from the Secunia site, Avira anti-virus advised that it detected the file RCX72.tmp as "containing a pattern of the (harmful) BDS/Agent.ahg.3 back door trojan. I told Avira to quarantine, and PSI installed without further incident. I suspect it was a flse positive, but to be sure I ran it through virustotal.com with the following results:
Avira: as stated above
eSafe: Suspicious file
McAfee-GW-Edition: Trojan.Backdoor.Agent.ahq.3
File and hash info:
ile size: 593204 bytes
MD5...: 8c96ad232019cfec450c8618b13629da
SHA1..: 91f448591902090ab5ba572df79fe8a2254ba2ab
SHA256: e8c06e2749b8afcb02b65dd5618a3dc2bfe781187ebe0e298a 687284f50d76f8

2. After completing the updates for patch Tuesday on 9 June, PSI beta 7 is telling me that I still have two unpatched items, but Microsoft Updates did not show that I needed the updates.
a. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.x 8.0.6001.18702
Secunia Advisory:
http://secunia.com/advisories/35362/
Secunia Product Page:
http://secunia.com/advisories/product/21625/
The patch is Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP_IE8-WindowsXP-KB969897-x86-ENU.exe
b. Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
Microsoft Windows RPC Marshalling Engine Vulnerability
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-026 (970238)
Secunia Advisory:
http://secunia.com/advisories/35373/
Secunia Product Page:
http://secunia.com/advisories/product/22/

I went to the Microsoft Download Centerand found the two patches, but before I try to install them, I would like to know Secunia's take on these discrepancies.

3. Two glitches:
a. When I click the online references button at the bottom of the insecure window in PSI Beta 7, and then click close, it still opens the web page instead of just closing.
b. When I close the main PSI window, PSI appears to minimize to the task bar, but clicking it gets no response. If I want to see the GUI again, I have to open it from the system tray.

Thanks. Great program.

Hi,
Since you are interested in improving the quality of your product, I would like to pose a question---and post a feedback.
a) My PSI inspector (home user version) is continuously getting disabled, though it is set to start on startup
b) My last scan was in Jan 2009
c) Manual scans are not happening. The scan is being aborted at step 7, in the process of matching signatures of your 8-step scan.

What could be the reason. Could you look into it.

I am using the version 1.0.0.4, the stable version. Surely this version should not face such problems!

Cheers
Jan Iye

For alleycat61.
I can only speak from my experience with Xp ; when I get the Win32 "message" it usually means that the file you want to run is corrupted or damaged in some way . It may be the file itself or where you download it or if you try to run it direct rather than download it.
Bear in mind I am no techie , but what I do is download the setup.exe file to program files (be absolutely sure that you trust it's origin*) - some people suggest Desktop (ask the provider's tech support , if you can). Close all other programs - this will also include PSI. I then run the setup .exe from my Program Files & follow the wizard's instructions.
For me , v1.0.0.7 still prompts me to close PSI and then that it will uninstall the older versionand then install the new one. This works for me ; others remove the older version first , themselves.
I have been told that firewalls and A/V software can cause file corruption or if you use something like CCleaner after you download but before you run the setup file. because temp. files may be needed.
That's as much as I know , perhaps someone technical could also reply to you.
PS*: if you right click the setup file before you run it ,the menu should let you check the file using your loaded security software

2. After completing the updates for patch Tuesday on 9 June, PSI beta 7 is telling me that I still have two unpatched items, but Microsoft Updates did not show that I needed the updates.
a. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.x 8.0.6001.18702
Secunia Advisory:
http://secunia.com/advisories/35362/
Secunia Product Page:
http://secunia.com/advisories/product/21625/
The patch is Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP_IE8-WindowsXP-KB969897-x86-ENU.exe
b. Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
Microsoft Windows RPC Marshalling Engine Vulnerability
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-026 (970238)
Secunia Advisory:
http://secunia.com/advisories/35373/
Secunia Product Page:
http://secunia.com/advisories/product/22/

I went to the Microsoft Download Centerand found the two patches, but before I try to install them, I would like to know Secunia's take on these discrepancies.

3. Two glitches:
a. When I click the online references button at the bottom of the insecure window in PSI Beta 7, and then click close, it still opens the web page instead of just closing.
b. When I close the main PSI window, PSI appears to minimize to the task bar, but clicking it gets no response. If I want to see the GUI again, I have to open it from the system tray.

Thanks. Great program.

I just got the 2 missing updates in item 1 above. Why they were not shown on the MS Updates site I don't know. So item 1, above can be disregarded.

Hi. This has been working well on my system. One small point is in the Overview tab, the Secunia PSI World Map compares my score to England. I'm Scottish and live in Scotland!

Is there anywhere to set my nation?

Thanks.

So annoying my country doesn't exist in these drop down menu's. It's Scotland, not the UK!

Sorry I am late with my answer.
These are my levels:
Word 12.0.6425.1000
Excel 12.0.6425.1000
Powerpoint 12.0.6425.1000
PowerpointViewer 12.0.6414.1000

I realize, seeing this, that you say I am not up-to-date.
But I have completely UNINSTALLED Office and the viewers some time ago.
So I think these are only LEFTOVERS !!!!!

I now work with the free OpenOffice application.
Is there a Office cleanup program to get rid of this leftovers?

You could try hovering your mouse over the name of the insecure file, determine the location, and delete it, or you can try the steps here http://kb.iu.edu/data/ajkk.html

Yes they look like the installation files that remain on the system to help with diagnostics.

Surprised they are still there now U have removed the main programmes.

thank you Dev for this awesome tool!

has anyone noticed a significant increase in memory use/leak, post scan and after minimized to tray?

during initial/startup scan cpu would run at 20-35% and memory would crawl on up to 70MB, dropping to 15-20MB once complete and sent to tray. After upgrading beta 1005 to 1007 I get similar scan memory use and even similar release when sent to tray- but after a 12hr period I noticed it had gone from 20MB to over 100MB... nothing scientific about this, just watching it in taskman.

(running on fresh XPproSP3 install, 1.73GHz Intel(M), 2GB ram, 3GB pagefile, plenty of tweaking, hardening, and security progs)...

Only thing I see that is strange is that Firefox is repeated 3 times in the "Secure Browsing" list. Other than that - smooth sailing. You Secunia folks get a big 'ole ATTABOY from me for this great program.

Try clicking the "patched" link, then hover your mouse over each instance of Firefox to see if the paths are different.

This release is reporting that Trend Micro's Housecall ActiveX Control 6.x is installed and insecure.

I have checked Internet Explorer's Addon's and found no way to remove it. I've checked the directory it is supposedly installed in and the dll is not there.

See http://mail.cnc.bc.ca/users/gagel/SecuniaHousecall... for a screen shot.

Note that the above link should be all one line.

It is working well on XP SP3 on 2 notebooks nda tower and a Vista Home Premium 64 Tower.

I am not able to make it stop scanning programs in a subfolder of folder UBCD4Win. It seems to go one or two levels deep and then forget it is ignoring.

The language in the rules is:
D:\UBCD4Win\*.*
D:\UBCD4Win\BartPE\*

I don't know if this is new behavior from the beta. I deleted the folder UBCD2Win some time ago to clean up the PSI messages and am now trying to make it co-exist with PSI.

About finding programs previously removed (Win XP):

Be aware that using the <Add or Remove> in Control Panel or using <Uninstall> provided with the program in question MAY NOT REMOVE ALL OF THE PROGRAM. It may simply remove enough of the program so as to disable it's use.

Use the search in <Windows Explorer>. Search the drive the program was install on. Enter the name of the program (sometimes you'll have to play around a little with this). When the search finds something be very careful how you "delete" the files. If <Recycle Bin> is empty you can safely move suspect files there to see if the problems is resolved.

Be advised, if the wrong files are removed, you may need a Windows boot disk to restart and restore the file.

I have had another "really" good go at installing Beta 1.0.0.7 using and trying every trick I have learned to get it going but completely without success. This despite having had Beta V1.0.0.5 running previously. Each and every time it gets only as far as uninstalling the previous version, installing the new version, then attempting to Run but falling over after about 20 minutes of trying to establish if a connection exists. At which point it suggests that the Firewall may be creating a problem. However adding the new version to the Firewall allow still changes nothing.

Attempts to reinstall either the new Beta again and/or stable Ver 1.0.0.4 using IE8 fail only producing "bad" file messages. Atempts to reinstall Beta using Firefox produces the same result again. However, using Firefox to reinstall the stable version I was finally able to get back to it again and hence to here...........??????

There is obviously some sort of issue affecting my system which has never experienced a problem with installing or updating any of the previous Secunia versions using IE!
