from KB970059 file "office2007-kb970059-fulfile-x86-glb.exe wont update to version 12.0.6502.5000. However if pptviewer is downloaded as version 12.0.4518.1014 and then from MS update pptviewer SP2 is installed to version 12.0.6414.1000 then KB970059 applies and then you will get version 12.0.6502.5000 When MS office 2007 pro is installed pptviewer is not visible in Add or remove Programs but is visible after the above work. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 is the location for Vista and XP pro on my pc's Rescanning indicates patched. |

Great solution. Had it working in less than 10 mins. Here are the steps I took: 1. Googled "pptviewer 12.0.4518.1014 " and downloaded from http://www.filehippo.com/download_powerpoint/ . Installed it. 2. Went to microsoft update site (use Windows Update from PC or google Microsoft Update in IE) and "Express" found the update to the viewer. Installed it. 3. Whilst in Microsoft update site used their search to find the KB970059. http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?mkt=en-US... Downloaded and installed it. 4. Secunia required a computer rescan. Now, no more problems! Steve http://www.pcresolver.es |

Download the file from Microsoft site. 2. Open it with 7Zip (google it or find hompage using Wikipedia; presumably WinZip and WinRAR will work too) 3. Go to "pptview.msp" and open that 4. Go to "PATCH_CAB" and open that. 5. You will find the file "PPTVIEW.EXE_0001" which you can copy to your hard drive. 6. Rename file (delete "_0001") 7. Copy to Office12 directory (renaming older version if you want to keep it as a backup) The method described in the first two posts of this thread is probably easier, but my method is perhaps interesting as a generic way of getting around faulty Microsoft patches. Also, you are getting the new file straight from MS rather than having to rely on a version of PPTView downloaded from a third-party site (if I understand the second post correctly). |

Why would you need a powerpointviewer if you already have powerpoint?? It seems a little redundant to install the viewer when you have the full featured office pro version of it. It will only associate your pps and ppt files with the viewer and they will open there instead of in powerpoint itself where you can edit them. I bet your PSI won't complain if it's not there to begin with and you would never have to patch it again. |

I have the same problem. Has anyone found a link to download MS powerpoint viewer 2007 for Win XP (sp3)? I have read and tried the above suggestions, but they do not work for me Question: I have never used powerPoint in the past and doubt that I ever will, so as long as I don't use it, am I still supceptable to the vulnerability threat and have to download the patch or is it just a matter of personal choice? Being as U say U will perhaps not use all the features U need only complete part one of the solution. The only reason the Office suite has the PPTVIEW file embedded is to facilitate the option to use it when the PUBLISH & PACKAGE TO CD command is evoked. Office Suite users have 3 options: 1. Rename the insecure file - details are at 1. below. This will remove the insecurity. 2. Wait for Microsoft to produce a proper update for Office users. On my last contact they were at the "Whoops" stage so do not hold your breath!! 3. If U are a regular user of the PUBLISH & PACKAGE TO CD command carry out a self help work around. WORK AROUND. I apologise for the length of the work around. Hopefully it will result in the most novice user being able to update their expensive Office Suite to full unlimited functionality. Here we go! 1. If U have not previously renamed the offending PowerPoint file from my previous post U should do that now as follows: 2.Click START>select RUN>copy & paste this into the box - C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Microsoft Office\Office12 - now click OK. 3. From the window that opens scroll down & look for a file called PPTVIEW.EXE - Right click on it & RENAME it PPTVIEW.EXE_OLD 4. Close all open windows. The insecurity reported by PSI has been removed. INSTALLING THE UPDATED FILE.(ONLY REQUIRED IF U USE THE PUBLISH & PACKAGE TO CD COMMAND) 1.Download this file and SAVE to DESKTOP - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa... 2. Those without Winzip Professional installed need to download & install this programme: http://www.filehippo.com/download_7-zip/ 3. Once 7Zip is installed Right click on the Microsoft downloaded file on the desktop>scroll down to 7Zip and select OPEN ARCHIVE 4. A window will open - Look for this file PPTVIEW MSP 5. Right click on it>scroll down to 7Zip and select OPEN INSIDE - once complete look for the file PATCH_CAB near the bottom of the page. 6. Right click on PATCH_CAB>scroll down to 7Zip and select OPEN - a separate window will open showing the file PPTVIEW_0001 - this is the file U want to patch your Office set up. 7. Right click on file PPTVIEW_0001 - select COPY TO - a box will appear - copy & paste this into the "Copy To" box - C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\ then click OK (Nothing appears to happen but keep the faith) 8. Close all open windows. COMPLETING THE UPDATE. 1.Click START>select RUN>copy & paste this into the box - C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Microsoft Office\Office12 2. Scroll & look for 2 files: PPTVIEW.EXE_0001 dated 28/3/2009 PPTVIEW.EXE_OLD dated 10/11/2008 3.Right Click on the PPTVIEW.EXE_0001 file>select RENAME & rename it PPTVIEW.EXE (The icon will change to reflect it is a Microsoft active file) 4.Right Click on PPTVIEW.EXE_OLD and select DELETE. Your Microsoft Office 2007 is now secure & fully functional. U can now remove the Microsoft downloaded file from the desktop & uninstall 7Zip via Add/Remove if no longer required. -- Maurice Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit OS HP Intel Pentium i7 IE9 16GB RAM |

Maurice, I have Vista and MS Office 2007. Once I found the Run command (Vista hides it) and pasted C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Microsoft Office\Office12 I got an error message that it couldn't be found. I then worked my way in manually. That got me to PPTVIEW which is an application. I could not get to PPTVIEW.EXE in order to rename it. Since I have the PowerPoint application should I delete the PPTVIEW or would renaming the application work? [My actual score dropped from 100% to 99% with the last MS updates in spite of my profile showing 100%] I know you must be getting tired of this drill but we all appreciate your assistance. Bill |

Thanks Maurice, that did the trick. I posted the Microsoft 12 file into Start>Run, but I got a message saying that the file could non be found. I then manually searched for the file. My Computer > C:Drive>Program Files>Microsoft Office>Office12. And the renamed it and all is now OK. Do I have to rename this file again in the future when Microsoft release further updates/patches? Just one question: as i renamed the file I got a warning pop up say that renaming this file could cause the program not to work,. Is this true or should I just ignore it. I started powerpoint just see and it seems ok. Thank again Maurice -- Win XP Home sp3 FireFox 3.6,6 Secunia PSI v1.5.0.2 |

Tony, If U have only renamed the file as per my guidelines Powerpoint will work perfectly. If in the future U create your own presentation & then wish to burn it to disk it will require that file & will warn U as such. Given your described use of PowerPoint U should now be OK. -- Maurice Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit OS HP Intel Pentium i7 IE9 16GB RAM |

I came up with a simple fix for this problem - just install the application. THE PROBLEM: Secunia was reporting PPTVIEW.EXE as insecure. It was mind boggling, as I had never installed Powerpoint Viewer 2007 - only the full version of Office 2007 Professional. The problem here is that Powerpoint Viewer 2007 is not actually installed on the local machine. Therefore Microsoft Update can't detect any available patches for PPTVIEW.EXE since it isn't installed, with all of the necessary registry entries and extra files to be patched up. The reason the Office suite has the PPTVIEW.EXE included in the %Program Files%\Microsoft Office\Office12\ directory is so PPTVIEW.EXE can be embedded when the PUBLISH & PACKAGE TO CD command is invoked. THE FIX: 1.) Download Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa... 2.) Install Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007. 3.) Run Windows Update - the first time I ran it there were 4 Security updates to be installed. 3.) Run Windows Update again - there were an additional 4 Security updates to be installed. 4.) Rerun Secunia - the application may now be detected as the latest version. The first time I did this, Secunia did not detect PPTVIEW.EXE as the latest version, even when I manually verified the pptview.exe version myself. The version number shows 12.0.6502.5000, but Secunia wasn't that quick on the uptake. What I did to fix this: 1.) Rename PPTVIEW.EXE to PPTVIEW.EXE.BAK. 2.) Secunia detected the filename change and reported the application as uninstalled. 3.) Rename PPTVIEW.EXE.BAK to PPTVIEW.EXE 4.) Secunia then detected the presence of PPTVIEW.EXE and picked up the new, latest and greatest, not insecure version number. Cliffs: Download & Install Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Run Windows Update until there are no more updates to install. Maybe you'll have to rename the offending .exe twice. ... Profit! Standalone thread so the fix is easier to find: http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/319... |

This was my second battle with Powerpoint viewer. I used the process spectralkinesis provided on 17 Dec 2009 23:17. I have Vista and Office 2007 installed on my computer. The file I had was pptview.exe.manifest which I renamed pptview.bak and back again to get a 100% scan. If I had to do it over again I'd try the three downloads Julian offered on 30 Aug 2009 at 12:15.
