Hi, I'm trying to install the new psi but I'm being told to uninstall the old one.
The removal tool doesn't work and it isn't anywhere to be seen. Not in Add/remove or in progs or on my desktop,
Any ideas please?
Thank you
Peter

In your tray-bar (next to the clock) there is the Secunia PSI icon, right-click it and choose Exit, then "Ok". This should close the PSI and allow you to install the new version.

Have you checked your Directory > Program Files > Secunia ~ PSI. I have an uninstall app file in the PSI folder. Odd that u cannot locate via Control Panel. Have u tried revo uninstaller. PSI 1.5 is supposed to uninstall previous ver. Are u experiencing PSI 1.5 download/exe is not able to remove previous version?

I try to install but when I try to uninstall old version the uninstaller says it can't do it and tells me to go to Add/Remove but it's not in there.

Hi Peter
I used the term Directory. Maybe your familiar with the term Tree. The container where all your Folders and Files are organized. Windows Explorer or My Computer. Follow the Tree (list) down to
Computer > Local Disk(C:)> Program Files > Secunia > PSI.. I have an uninstall application in the PSI File which is part of the Secunia Folder which is part of the Program Files Folder which is part of Local Disk(C:).
If you cannot locate Secunia > PSI. Then PSI is not installed on your machine. You mentioned Control Panel > Programs/add-remove ~ does not display Secunia as an installed application. Then PSI is not installed on your machine. Which as I write this makes no sense. Since I assume you have PSI ver 1.0.0.4 installed. Otherwise why would you want to upgrade to 1.5. I'm missing some part of the story.
Post back if you think I can help or email Secunia directly.
Respectfully
bjm-
P.S. revo uninstaller is a free tool. revouninstaller.com...If PSI is installed on your machine revo will find it and help you to uninstall PSI and any remnants.

I'm having the same problem. I removed it from add/remove programs as well as downloading "Revo Uninstaller". No luck. It still says the PSI is currently running. I can't find it anywhere in my Vista.
I even went to Run" and typed msconfig. I did not find it there either. I think "Secunia screwed up".

It's not in my Toolbar. I uninstalled it. I first went to add/remove programs. Then I typed in "Run" msconfig. It was not in there.I then went to "REVO" Uninstaller. It could not remove the old one. It still says it's running on my computer when I try to download it.

I'm having the same problem. Had to do a Restore to two days ago (computer fouled up trying to download new Microsoft Beta Security Essentials) and Secunia disappeared from bar. Tried to download again and got message Need to uninstall Old Version. Tried to locate and Remove on list of programs but no Secunia listed. Did find empty folder labeled Secunia and removed it. Still no luck in downloading Secunia PSI. Tried msconfig but not there either. Tried to remove any possible remnants with revouninstall but no Secunia found there either. Tried rebooting but no Secunia. Anybody have any other suggestions to try?

In XP
Go to My Computer,
Double click on local disc C,
Double click on the "Programme files" icon
Find an icon saying "Secunia"
Double click on that.
Then there should be an "uninstall" icon
Douible click on that and Joe's your uncle.

Tried the Go To C Drive advice yesterday and today, then to Programs etc. No Secunia icon or folder so couldn't right click on anything. Still getting old version prohibiting download of any version of PSI.

Sorry friend, all I can do is advise you to contact Secunia direct.
They helped me with this prob before but I came here this time so as not to bother them.
Good luck.

Okay, you can try to manually delete any files left in the registry.
Beware that this suggestion is your own responsibillity, Secunia will
not take responsibillity for any damage this may cause to your system.

Go to start->Run
Type: regedit
Open the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Microsoft->
Windows->CurrentVersion->Uninstall->Secunia PSI
Delete any files still in this folder.

Hope this solves the problem
Secunia PSI Support

Hi! I have Uniblue Registry Booster on my computer so I did a scan with it first as it sets a full Registry backup and time point so if something went wrong I could restore the registry.
Then I followed the regedit path you gave me, found the folder Secunia PSI, opened it; 4 items in it; 3 could be deleted; the fourth couldn't - when I tried to delete the fourth (which was actually listed first) I got the message couldn't delete all values which was interesting as the descriptors for that item were: Name was some symbol with 'ab' in it and '(Default)' after the symbol; Type was 'REG_SZ'; and Data was '(value not set)';
Secunia PSI still wouldn't download and got the usual couldn't remove previous version etc. etc.

After I couldn't remove or install after doing regedit procedure, I decided to rerun scan on Uniblue Registry Booster. It showed only one problem which was at that exact regedit path; I OK'd Correct Problem; it did its usual - made Registry backup and it then said it repaired the problem;
Rebooted; found I could download PSI now with no 'unable to remove old version' message or problem.
PSI now installed, ran scan OK. Thanks for your help. I'll save the regedit info in case I have to do a Restore again and run into the same problem. Should I post your regedit message and my last two responses to the Forum thread? Pete

Hi again
I think it's a good idea to share the solution with other PSI users.

The simplest is to right click on the Secunia icon in the tray and exit the program. Then the installer can work. First it will uninstall the old program and install the new. You may need to expand the items in the tray to catch all of them left click on the white arrow,and look for the red icon. This is the first I've heard of a corrupt file from Secunia. You can also try a overwrite of the files. It has worked in desperation for me. Simply go on net and find the download for Secunia and try downloading from net. If it succeeds it may repair the corrupt file well enough to be able to uninstall and go from the beginning again.

This didn't work and that's why we all had problems.
I was trying to install a new version of Secunia when the problem arose so installing over is not the answer in this case.

If you are familiar with the console prompt, this might be worth a try.

Open a console prompt and navigate to the folder where you have saved the PSI installer. Type this: PSIsetup -SkipUninstall

I'm not saying it works, only that it might be worth the try.

Re Puget1's advice. The assumption is you have an icon in the tray. I did NOT have an icon to click on - it had disappeared; which is why I had to try all the suggestions above and finally got the solution by using another program.

I used Uniblue Registry Booster 2009. I bought it last year since it does a good job cleaning up registry errors (catches errors that Norton's WinDoctor doesn't) and has a good Registry defragger. I'm sure there are other similar programs that might do the job also. Please see my earlier post as to the steps I followed which were based on advice from Secunia help - note their caveat also.

I had the same problem as pcdillon, and applied the regedit solution, and still couldn't install the new version of psi. With great trepidation I also deleted the Secunia folder in the regedit. This worked!
