Update Tuesday and maybe this is typical but fails to make sense.

Secunia finds XP Pro insecure before and after these updates were applied:
Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB973346) Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2009 (KB890830) Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB961371) Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB971633) Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Microsoft Update
Windows Defender Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.61.1497.0) Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Automatic Updates

Location of insecurity is unavaiable and the solution is the solution which has already been successfully applied

I hope that somebody can explain what is happening

Have you done a reboot &/or full rescan ?

I made the post after a doing a warm and cold reboot and 2 rescans.

after sevaral further reboots and rescans the problem has now cleared and the program no longer showsas insecure.

A minor point , which is not clear from your post , MS/Windows updates ,etc., normally require a full scan to be run :ie: not a programme(s) "rescan".

Very frustrating and non-specific message. I am fighting the same problem. XP professional is many, mqny pieces of code. Iss there a way to find what PSI is objecting to? MS update passes the install and PSI rejects it after several days and several reboots and scans.

For what it is worth , I have read that if you applied the workaround patch KB972890 a week or so ago , then there is a problem installing the cumulative kill bit patch KB973346 & the machine remains vulnerable .

I "think" you have to uninstall 972890 first.

IF this is your case , don't take my word for it , check it further.

Forcing a complete rescan cured my problems.
