Hi there,

This is my first post at the forums.

I have a few questions regarding PSI 1.5:

1. Why does it show MS Office 07 PPT Viewer as vulnerable/ insecure when I dont have that installed.......I have to install it & than remove it for the warning to disappear?

2. IE 8 is a insecure browser by its ratings than what are the secure ones?

3. How can I clean uninstall PSI 1.5 as if it was never installed in the first place.......including all files, registry entries?

Hoping to hear from you smart people,

Regards,

1. To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, please follow these guidelines using the
ADVANCED interface:
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
* Click on the + sign of the program to “expand’ it.
* Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file.
* Remember the installation path and close down the menu.
* Click Open Folder and locate the detected file.

Have U changed the folder option to show all hidden files?

Have U tried Windows Search asking it to search hidden files?

2. The only 2 browsers I personally use is IE8 to access M$ downloads, etc., -Firefox is my default browser & v.3.5.1 is secure w/ latest patch & disregarding any addons/plugins as Java(tm) v. 6.0.140.8 is insecure w/ any browser. IE8 is insecure w/ no patch available from M$.

3. Use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Secunia PSI & then install & run Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility tool or if you like you can use a 3rd party uninstaller if you trust it.

I'm not claiming to be a "smart person" but what little I've learned & come to appreciate mostly came from this Forum when it comes to security.
Having said that maybe you should disregard #3 & stick around & get "smart" or share your knowledge with others on the Forum-welcome & hope you are a regular visitor.

Regards, wr

Thanks wr for your detailed, in depth, concise explanation.

I too am have started to use FF 3.5.1as my default browser but still Secunia shows it as insecure cause I have checked the Java plug-in for Mozilla in CP.

Should I uncheck it to make it show secure?

What shall I lose by unchecking Java?

Hoping to hear,

Regards,

Hi eDOC786,

Un-checking any insecure program doesn't make it secure. The only way to make the program in question secure is to apply the patches provided by the vendor. The vendor in this case Java(tm) has said that a patch will be released @ the end of July-hopefully this year as they are usually really sloooow in providing patches quickly. The only other option to rid your system of the insecurity is to uninstall the program. You could create a ignore rule but this means the insecurity is still present & you would have no way of knowing when other patches would need to be applied as it wouldn't be reported in the scan. I also use Java(tm) in both my browsers, IE8 & FF 3.5.1 which is my default browser. I just try to be cautious in my Cybersurfing & scan @ the end of the day with my on demand scanner which happens to be MBAM.

I hope this was of some help to you & hopefully we don't have to wait very long for a patch from Java(tm).

Regards, wr

Edit: If you uninstall Java(tm) some websites or other peripherals may not work properly.

You're very welcome eDOC786,

At the top of this page there is a Orange box titled Forum, beside it is another box titled Secunia Profile, opening this box lets you add items to signature line, location on World map, Secunia score, etc. The only other changes that can be made is on the Overview page under Settings.

Hope this answers your questions regarding Control Panel for Secunia, I'll have to research the gif problem, or maybe my IT hero Maurice Joyce will drop by & see this post & lend a helping hand. Right off the top of my head if you have changed browsers, you might want to check your default settings for that browser or change to jpeg-not sure-as I said earlier, will try to research & post back.

Regards, wr

P.S. Seeing your 2 locations I presume FL is home & the other is "job" related? Military?

Edit: Because the URL is so long suggest that you type in the whole string or you won't get to website I intended-jpg_vs_gif-or maybe copy & paste into browser.
