My firewall tells me daily that Java is trying to connect to java.sun.com. I know that I must have Java, though I am not entirely sure what it is or does! Secunia does not identify it as a problem but why does it persist in trying to connect to java.sun.com every day? I keep denying it though not blocked it as yet as I want to know what it is trying to do. I thought I read somewhere that it is monitoring my activities and that made me wary.

When it popped up this morning, I obtained some details about it and have pasted in a brief extract of the detail I have. I would be grateful if someone could advise me about it in non-geek speak:

Java [TM] Platform binary (jusched.exe) is trying to connect to java.sun.com [72.5.124.55] using remote port...

File Version : 6.0.130.3
File Description : Java(TM) Platform SE binary (jusched.exe)
File Path : C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

Many thanks in advance
Valerie

Hello Valerie

This is the first link Google search gave me for "jusched.exe" - I can understand it , so it's pretty basic .

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/what-...

It's Java wanting to update & so it is normal that it needs your/firewall permission to call home .

If you still have doubts you could check the file specifically with your installed security :eg: see what is in th menu when you right click on the file .

Hope this helps
Anthony

PS: you are right to be prudent.

Jusched is a useless updater the is in the start menu.

To get rid of the pest go to Control Panel>click on the Java icon>select the update tab & remove the tick from the auto update box.

It will ask U some silly question - just select never.

U have now removed a troublesome, useless resource user from your start menu.

I of course agree 100% with Maurice Joyce & had actually disabled the updater when I first installed Java(tm)-therefore no more nags. Another good reason to use Secunia PSI & fileHippo. The only program I let phone home is my Eset Smart Security for obvious reasons.

Hi Anthony

I read your message and checked the link which I followed to a point. Thank you.

I don't even see Java under my Task Manager/Processes. (Didnt even notice I had a Task Manager/Processes until today!) I checked carefully but it is definitely not there! Then I got lost with the instructions after that as it was getting a bit in depth and I had no Java showing with which to follow instructions. Yet, Java pops up on my screen every day, without fail.

Changing the subject, Maurice (he is such a wizard at this) has managed to guide me to clear all threats and end of life programmes on my pc and I am only now left with the dilemma of replacing the old Sygate firewall. Lord, I hate this. :( When will they build computers to look after themselves?

Valerie

Oh, just seen your message, Maurice and you have come to my non-IT rescue again. Did what you said. Adios Java.

Thanks to Anthony and wr for their input too. All help is always gratefully received by me.

Hi Valerie,

filehippo is a updater service that scans your systems programs & checks them for updates to those programs. Don't confuse it with the functions of the PSI as filehippo doesn't check for insecurities but for updates to programs installed without sending personal info to filehippo or any 3rd parties. I'll include the link to them so you can research & make a decision on whether to use or not. I personally like the program & have used it for over a year now. The price is right too, it's free.

Hi

I checked fileHippo and I see it is similar to Download.com.

I did have a bit of a concern when I looked over it. My concern is that I saw that they are promoting Sygate and yet Sygate is discontinued and has been for some time it seems. It has been taken over my Symantec and is no longer updateable. That is why I have to find myself another firewall.

Of course, when someone offered to load Sygate onto my computer around last March, I had no idea it was end-of-life or I would not have allowed it.

Best regards and thanks for all your input.

Valerie
