I just ran PSI 1.5. It told me that Foxit Reader 3.x, Google Picasa 3.x, Microsoft Bootvis 1.x and ThreatFire 4.x had been removed. None of them has been removed. All of them are fully patched. I can think of no reason why PSI would suddenly decide that these programs had been removed.

PSI does this sort of thing all the time, most frequently when I update a program, but also when I haven't done anything in particular to a program, as just happened. Sometimes PSI eventually gets around to deciding that a program that it previously decided was removed has been installed. Sometimes PSI never realizes that a program that it has decided was removed is still in my system or has been "installed."

Secunia has never attempted to explain this strange phenomenon, so far as I'm aware. Nor has it ever attempted to explain why, on the PSI overview tab, I am told to "Install Flash for Internet Explorer" even though Flash for Internet Explorer is installed and even though it is listed as installed on the Patched tab.

It would sure be nice if someone explained this craziness.

Hi! I have the same problem. Last night the scan showed 134 programs total which is correct and this morning it showed 10 programs removed which of course is not the case. Other than that, everything else seems to be ok. Last night when I scanned, it was after the Microsoft security updates were installed and as I said, the scan showed the right amount of installed programs. Unfortunately I don't know the reason for this.

In your case, I'd write Secunia support. It's not an issue I've heard of before.

Add me to the list of people that have programs 'removed' that weren't. I haven't searched all that hard, but the programs are still installed. For me this is a first & I've used the PSI from its beginning. I first noticed this today (Aug 12) after booting & the PSI gave me a balloon warning that 3 programs had been removed. This was also the day after (Aug 11) M$ patch Tuesday-maybe this had something to do with the phenomenon. I have not rescanned as the PSI automatically did its weekly scheduled scan 1st thing after I booted-however I have rebooted twice -with no change to the amount of programs detected.

Maybe the same Cyberelves that caused this to begin with will change it back. We can only hope.

Regards, wr

I will write to Secunia Support.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for the response to the Secunia team-I was waiting(procrastinating) a bit longer to see how many more would respond with the same symptoms.

Hope everything is going good for you-BTW my 3 programs aren't the same as the other posters'.

Regards, wr

EDIT: Excuse me, 1 program is the same-Foxit Reader.

Hi all! I posted earlier but I just wanted to mention again that after I installed the latest Microsoft updates and rebooted, PSI showed the proper list of my installed programs. This morning I ran PSI again and a pop up said that 10 programs were removed. It hasn't been right ever since. This pretty much shows that the Microsoft updates aren't the cause of the problem (I think).

Sorry. One thing I forgot to mention on my previous post was that I uninstalled PSI with Revo Uninstaller and reinstalled PSI. Same problem. I really like PSI but it does have some kinks from time to time.

I've been experiencing the problem and reporting it to Secunia for over a year now. I've never received a response.

Excellent! All is well again. Thanks again Maurice for pursuing the issue. The question now is whether it will stay fixed as this has happened in the past and seemed to correct itself. Personally I really like this program and will keep it regardless of an issue here and there.

Hi Maurice,
Thanks for your efforts in correcting this matter. How did you recover the 'lost programs'? Was it just a matter of doing a scan or what ? Mine are still 'lost'.

Thanks again for your help.

The four programs that were "removed" from my system have magically reappeared.

Now, if only PSI could figure out that Flash is installed . . . .

Which browser are you using? If you go to www.adobe.com and install Flash using Firefox then it is installed in Firefox. To show the graphs in the PSI you need to install Flash in Internet Explorer.

Or you can simply do without Flash at all. It is really not needed to use the PSI.

I've had the current version of Flash Player installed in both browsers ever since it first became available. I just reinstalled it in Internet Explorer. PSI still lists it as patched in Internet Explorer but still tells me to install it on the Overview tab.

I know that PSI functions properly without Flash Player, but it's still annoying having PSI tell me to install a program that it knows is already installed.

Hello Erwaxman ,

Some (long) time ago , Flash would not load to a programme(s)for no apparent reason !!

Eventually a "tip/fix" was found whereby clicking on one of two Flash folder files seemed to fix/repair the folder/fault & Flash worked OK (for a while). Can't remember if a reboot was needed ,as well.

The files in question in the current flash folder are :_
NPSWF32_Flashutil (General Plug-in) &
Flash Util 10c (ActiveX control).
Double click either/both & a window will show telling you that there is an update available (I know , I know) , click to install now ( or something like that , I'm translating from French) & the files/folder seem to reset !!

Obviously with Adobe , shutting/exiting all running programmes is probably best. Not sure if you need a reboot .

Anyway , you may want to try this if all else has failed .

Anthony.

Your tip worked, and without a reboot.

Thank you!
