Just downloaded and ran Secunia for the first time. Found some programs that need to be updated and am in the process of upgrading them. Is there a program that will search out and identify the background processes that are running expressly for the purpose of looking for software upgrades? Now that I will be using Secunia to find upgrades, I don't need these to be slowing me down.

Strickly speaking Secunia is not looking to update your software simply letting you know if you have any insecurities on your computer and giving advice where possible where the patch can be found if there is one available.

If you want a program to search for software updates try Filehippo.com Update Checker.

However, to answer your question I am not knowledgable enough to know.

you can download it from http://www.filehippo.com/default.aspx

Ah, leave them running mate. If you really want them of, I think the best way would be to comb the program in question through for a "auto update" setting.

Besides, keeping vendor updates running provides redundancy.

You could try Startup Lite. Very easy to use.

I also like StartupRun (now called WhatInStartup) although it is slightly more complicated.

I also like to disable my programs inbuild update feature and instead rely on the PSI. That makes the computer a bit faster, less complicated, and reduces the risk of software conflicts. Of course that strategy also requires quite some confidence in the reliability of the PSI but I have now used it for 1 year and it still works fine for me.
