If you installed PowerPoint 2003, this is for you. If you've installed just the viewer, this probably won't help - you should just run Microsoft Update.

When you install PP2003, it copies the files needed for the PP Viewer, but it doesn't actually install the viewer, so there are no registry entries for Microsoft Update or the standalone patch to detect it (PSI just looks to see if the files are there.). PP needs the viewer files for the "Package for CD" option, so even if you don't use the viewer yourself, you should patch it so you aren't giving out packaged CDs with the vulnerable version.

Obviously, make backups before you follow these instructions, proceed at your own risk, etc.

So, to manually patch the PP Viewer, download the standalone patch Security Update for PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (KB969615) from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa... . From a command prompt, run the patch with the /extract:<directory> option, where <directory> is where you want it to put the files. For example,
office2003-kb969615-fullfile-x86-en-us.exe /extract:ppvpatch

In this directory, you'll find several files, but only two have been updated in a Office 2003 directory that has had all current updates applied - gdiplus.dll and pptview.exe.

Copy these two files from the ppvpatch directory:
gdiplus.dll version 11.0.8230.0 (digitally signed)
pptview.exe version 11.0.8305.0

to c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\

replacing:
gdiplus.dll version 11.0.8230.0 (not digitally signed)
pptview.exe version 11.0.8164.0

This is what I did and PSI doesn't see any insecure programs anymore.
