Secunia PSI Advanced shows I have one remaining insecure Program: PowerPoint Viewer 2003 Version 11.0.5703.0 Installation Path: C:\Program\Files\Dell\MediaDirect\Kernal\Office\PP TVIEW.EXE This came installed on my Dell computer.
My Add/Remove panel shows that I have Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Version 12.0.6425.1000 installed also Security Update for PPV 2007 and PPV Service Pack 2. It does not list PPV 2003.
Microsoft Update states (if i understand it correctly) I would have to install Service Pack 3 before I patch PPV 2003. The threads I followed on this subject to patch PPV 2003 are too complicated for my level of skill.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Let me know about your system? Will go from there. I know from fact, that if you are still receiving updates from Media Direct (correction),you can delete the file by file number Secunia says is obsolete. Media Direct will then download the correct patch for you probably with-in 24hrs. If not you will have to download it directly from Microsoft. Link
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx...
Thanks Maurice for keeping me honest! This is an old update do you remember the actual patch number?
Security Update for Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (KB956500)
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2003 that could allow arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified document is opened. This update resolves that vulnerability.
Hope this helps |

Hello Puget1
MediaDirect says no update are currently available. So, do I need to delete the insecure file first and then MediaDirect will update with the patched PPV2003; is that correct?
Thanks for helping me in this. |

This problem has been solved on the Forum before.
If I recall correctly there is a large Dell download that updates Medis Direct.
Once installed there is another smaller update that U get from the programme itself via the help menu. Sadly the person who had & solved the issue did not post links.
Why not try to RENAMING the offending file _OLD & try Dell update again.
Failing that I would contact support for the link to update the version of Media Direct installed.

I trust you have seen this thread:

Personally I have simply deleted the vulnerable files. I have done that on 2 or 3 PC's so far without any trouble. |

@HBR
Are U saying U have done it on Dell PC's that have Media Direct embedded into OEM Windows?
The link U have given is for those who have purchased Microsoft Office 2003.
This problem is for Dell Media Direct which they have fixed with 2 updates. We cannot locate the Dell patches.
Did your solution (delete the files) work on a Dell PC with Media Direct?

Dang! I can't find the old forum. Maurice you are good yes I use Dells exclusively. Back to problem. Yes you can remove the file number that Secunia says is a threat. You do this by passing your cursor over the ppv files and you get the balloon advising the different numbers installed delete the correct file number. Secunia will immediately give you a 100%. The link I gave about the one batch I installed plus there is a complete update for office products in general which I installed after that I have had no problem with Secunia or system |

User Since: 26th Nov, 2008
Secunia System Score: N/A
Location: Catania, IT I had the same problem, but i solved in few easy steps:
1. Download the patch "office2003-kb969615-fullfile-x86-xx-xx.exe"
2. In Command Prompt (Win+R - cmd) or PowerShell (Win+R - powershell) go to the folder where the patch is
3. Extract the content of the patch file, simply run "office2003-kb969615-fullfile-x86-xx-xx.exe /extract:.\temp\" to get the content in the "temp" subfolder
4. Copy the pptview.exe file over the unpatched in your program files folder
5. Rescan with PSI
At the top of the forum you'll see "
Microsoft And, this specific program:
Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 Click on Office powerpoint viewer 2003 and it will give you all the forums info on this topic
Here is a pertinent little forum Mauricehttp://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/227... (he he )

Thanks for all the input. I do know how to find and delete the insecure file with the Secunia Advanced program, my concern is how to replace it with a patched file; and do I even need the file? (yes, if one is making CDs I gather) It seems all the suggestions and threads to fix the file are more complex than I feel I can handle. I don't want to go too far into the bowels of the beast.
I'll give Dell Support a try to see if they have a simple way to fix this: failing that I think I will forget about it.
Thanks again all.
