Secunia PSI continuously shows a category 4 threat in my MS XP Home Ed. I have downloaded all Microsoft program and security updates, restarted the computer, and rerun the Secunia scan several times to no avail. What to do?

I would upgrade to PSI & use it in the advanced mode.

If U do decide to give it a try there will be some friendly advice for Secunia about "for use by experienced users". Just ignore it - it ia easy to use, scans many more programmes on your PC & has a toolbox which helps U decide what to do.

It may also give U more information about your current issue.

I already have Secunia PSI V1.5.0.0 and already in the Advanced section. Still after going through the Download Solution and re-scanning, the same message appears. Threat is non-specific, it simply says "This installation of Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition is insecure..." and it does not give an installation path. Do I need to go back and re-install Service Pack 3, and if so what are the implications?

Search for this on Microsoft - KB956802

Download & install it - hopefully it will cure your problem.

No, do not reinstall SP3 since that could kill more recently applied updates. I've found that occasionally Automatic Updates "forgets" to check for certain patches. The solution is to change the configuration settings for Automatic Updates from "Automatic" to either "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them" or to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them".

For some reason (I don't know why) changing the Automatic Updates settings seems to force Automatic Updates to find the missing updates, updates which will require your computer to be rebooted? Anyway, with one of the above settings Automatic Updates should find the missing updates and either download them or notify you about the updates sometime within 12 to 24 hours. Thats what worked for me after I had the same issue for over 2 weeks. Anyway, hopefully this will work for you too.
