Recent Scan 10/3/2009 reported Chrome version 3.0.195.21 as UNSTABLE. I updated to the "latest available" through normal channels to 3.0.195.24 but, Secunia PSI still reports as unstable after rescanning X2. Reports I have 195.21 installed. ???? Anyone have the same issue? There are a lot of Chrome users out there. What to do? Is this a Secunia or Google issue?

I'm using Vista SP2 on a DELL Inspiron 1525 laptop but, does that matter?

I had the same thing happen when I looked in the folder containing the folder 3.0.195.21 I noticed that next to it was the updated folder 3.0.195.24 (if my memory serves me correctly. So I put the old folder into the recycle bin and hey presto Secunia said all was well. I have not deleted the old folder yet in case that was not the right course of action.Google seems to be working OK so far, that was 3 days ago.

Jan, thanks for your comments.........makes sense. But, I was not able to follow the path Secunia reports in Vista! So, still wondering if it's a Secunia, Google or even a Vista problem. What OS do you use?

Jan, Interesting! I just downloaded and RE-installed Chrome (as opposed to updating it via the "about" menu choice) and Secunia is happy now. OH well? Do you you use Vista?

I'm running 3.0.195.24 and Secunia shows okay in Secure Browsing tab.

If I remember rightly now you mentioned it last time that happened I did as you have just done and it worked for me as well. I did that when I updated Avast Secunia did not recognise the update so I removed Avast with Revo un-installer and re-installed then all was well. I realise that this cannot be the correct way of doing things, but what the heck if it works...

Depending on your method of updating , you may be left with the "old" version folder ; this also (usually) contains Google Gears . If the new folder is "complete" you should delete the one PSI is showing as insecure ; make sure you only delete the old version folder/files .

PS: PSI may pick it up if you merely put it in the "garbage".

On Oct.1st.secunia posted a vulnerability in google chrome. This shows up in 3.0.195.24.This could be the reason why secunia classifies it as
unstable. It is also the reason why a newer version is acceptable

When I put it in the Recycle bin Secunia did not detect it. But when I took it out and put it in a saved data folder in case I needed to restore it for some reason Secunia then found it again and reported it a security risk so it seems the best thing to do is to copy the offending folder onto a flash drive in case it is wanted again.

Jan...........

PS I noticed four error entries in the event viewer under applications that Google Updated failed, I am now wondering if me removing the old folder took away something to do with the updating side of Chrome. I could manually update I suppose...........

Jan: Deleting the previous version is the correct way to go. No reason to keep it and it does not affect the operating of your computer. When an updated version of a program is installed it replaces an old one. Sometimes this doesn't happen thus an unstable alert.Trust secunia.Read the articles on tne site. Under vulnerability info> you will find the info on chrome.I tried google, but D/c'd it because I find google has a tendency to be hoggish. Excuse the comparison, but you get the idea.
Of note Jan, secunia did not pick up on chrome while in the recycle bin. That also is norm, it is no longer active and is gone once deleted.

To be absolutely clear , Secunia reports a highly critical vulnerability in Chrome versions prior to 3.0.195.24. in Secunia Advisory SA 36913 (as mentioned earlier by MaritimeRider).

This is not "unstable" , it is a serious security problem & PSI will show earlier versions in the "insecure" tab . Earlier versions , whose folder is left behind by certain updating methods , pose a security risk and should be deleted.

Absolutely correct.Thks Tony. As a new user, it is a good habit to read the articles on the site including the blogs. There is excellent info available. I was both surprised and pleased. Now it is part of my daily routine.

I had the same problem with it reporting the latest version of Chrome still being a problem. I followed the instructions above and moved the older version to the recycle bin. Secunia reports all okay now. Thank you very much.

Last time I just waited until Chrome did an update, but they just did another update, and now Secunia says that it's unstable again. It has left over 3.0.195.27 even after I did the update today 11-7-09.
I have a feeling they will just do another update again in a few days to remove that folder.

When Secunia tells you there is an update , it is referring to a "security" update ; the whole "raison d'etre" of PSI .

Chrome version 3.0.195.32 is a "security" update and not an eye candy or bug fix ; so version 3.0.195.27 is "insecure".

Should you wish you can check it here :-

http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.com/

As a user of PSI , personally , I would get rid of any insecure versions right away.

Take care
Anthony
