Look into a-square (free) (available through filehippo). It is a German company (EMSI) that finds all sorts of malware far more throughly than any other program. I have look at every program on the market except for Norton (that I won't let near my computers) and it beats that all (both free and costly). It is something that one runs at night to scan any drives you want to scan. It is not a firewall. For that I use both ZoneAlam and AVG. AVG is not good at finding bad infections, but it is good at catching some probes that ZoneAlarm lets through. | ||||||||

This is a minefield, ask 1,000 people and you will come up with 1,000 different answers!!!!! Somebody suggested a site called Gizmo's Freeware Reviews: http://www.techsupportalert.com/ I use some of the programs listed above, for "non standard" antivirus/antispyware progams I do like the Iobit programs already mentioned and the can be used in free and paid for versions. I like to keep my programs as upto date as possible and have been using Filehippo Update Checker and recently found a similar program from CNET called Techtracker: http://www.filehippo.com http://www.cnet.com/techtracker/app/ I hope some of this is of help. As concerns Ian "Gizmo" Richards' site linked above by Michael , I would also highly recommend it for unbiased advice on Free software in general . The site has just launched a "security wizard" to give you advice "tailored" to you/ and your habits . Here is the direct link (I would click on the "more" link in the page text for more info before you try the wizard) :- http://www.techsupportalert.com/secwiz Hope this helps . Take care Anthony -- It always seems impossible until its done. Nelson Mandela |
