After using Secunia I am left only with three insecure programs.
Two are Outlook 2000:
one is located in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OUTLOOK.EXE
the second in: E:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OUTLOOK.EXE

I do not use Microsoft Office and I never use Outlook, but this came with my Toshiba e330 PDA along with Active Sync.

I have clicked on the link to download the updates but this only takes me to the Windows Update site and there it does not find the proper update for Outlook alone.

Since I never use Outlook except when I have to fix my sync file in case they get corrupted, would it be safe to tell Secunia to ignore Outlook 2000?

The third problem is with: Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x
I uninstalled the old version first, downloaded and applied the updates but Secunia comes up again and again that it is unsecure.

General support for Office 2000 ended in July this year. If U never use it your best bet is to uninstall it via Add/remove.

I note U also have a copy on your E drive. Is that a backup drive?

JAVA - see below.

CLEARING OUT OLD JAVA DROSS
===========================

JAVA now use an Uninstaller as part of the install process.

It works very well but ONLY removes the previous version.

To ensure U have no previous dross from very old versions on your PC & to make updating easier for the future I would recommend:

1.Install or double check U have the latest JAVA version (Currently Version 6 Update 17)from here:
http://www.java.com/en/

Once the update is complete go to Control Panel>JAVA icon>Update Tab and take the tick out of box marked "Check for updates auto ....." (This will prevent a an unnecessary file from starting each time U switch on your PC - PSI is already doing this job for U)

2. Now remove all the old dross from older versions.

The tool will do the job by deleting useless files from previous installs except for the version U have just installed

http://raproducts.org/

*This link takes U to the site - select the Windows Binary (zip) option.
*This will lead U to Sourceforge.net to download it.
*Save the download to desktop.
*Activate the desktop zip icon which exposes the JAVARA EXE file. Click it
*Select RUN when asked.
*Select your language.
*The tool will now appear on the desktop - select REMOVE OLDER VERSIONS
*Once complete select ADDITIONAL TASKS - tick all boxes & activate.
*Right click on the desktop JAVARA zip file & delete it.

3. If U wish to test your JAVA is working correctly use this test link: http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

FUTURE UPDATING OF JAVA.
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Now U have cleared the dross future updating is easy & should not include the procedure outlined above. All U will need to do is:

1. Go to Start>Control Panel>click on the JAVA icon>select the Update tab>click the Update Now button.

2. Once the update is complete go to Control Panel>JAVA icon>Update Tab and take the tick out of box marked "Check for updates auto ....." (This will prevent a an unnecessary file from starting each time U switch on your PC - PSI is already doing this job for U)

3. If U prefer not to have the JAVA icon in the System Tray when in use, open the Advanced Tab>look for Miscellaneous>click the + sign & then remove the tick from clearly marked box.

By using this recommended method the previous version will be automatically uninstalled & U are guaranteed to get the correct version for your OS.

Thank you Maurice, all the instructions you gave me worked like a charm.
Now my system is clean of all the old Java, there were four different versions that were removed.

Thank you again,

Tony

Tony,
Pleased everything worked out for U.Once PSI warns U of a vulnerability updating should be a snip & I would recommend:

FUTURE UPDATING OF JAVA.
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

I followed the directions t remove old java files.
The same thing happened as when I did this in the past!
My java was not working. So I reinstalled (from your links, thanks!).
Is it true that we need the most recent 2 versions in order
for the java to work in a browser?

No - U only need one JAVA. U should be using JAVA(TM)6 Update 17

Are U referring to the two entries in the PSI patched area?

If so,leave them alone. If U look closely U will see the paths are different as follows:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\java.exe

C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe

No, I was referrring to the Java Control Panel folder which on the
Java tab where 2 installs are checked. In the past, I noticed that if only the latest one were checked, the java did not work.

Sorry, I am not exactly sure where U are looking.

JAVA have some settings in the OS Control Panel but nothing like U describe.

If U are talking about an entry in Windows Explorer what is the path?

Sue,
Normally in there should only be one entry.

It should be (reading left to right):

1.6
1.6.0_17
http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se
C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe
true

The USER TAB & SYSTEM tab should read the same.

What does the other entry say?

true

The other entry says
1.6 1.6.0_17 http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se C:\P rogram Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe true

Sue,
Are U a developer or something like that? Where did U download 1.7 from? It is not on general release - it is JDK.
The reason your Java is not working is it is being pointed to the wrong place.

Before I give more advice please confirm.

1. In Control Panel>add/remove what JAVA/JSE/JDK entries can U see?

2. Right click start>Explore>navigate to Program Files>Java>click on the + sign

There should be one folder marked JRE6 with a + sign - Are there any more?

If U wish to copy & paste the answers highlight the items>press CTRL + C & then post to the forum using CTRL + V

Remove all entries U see in there except JAVA(TM)6 update 17

I can then guide U further

Thanks for your help. Java is working now.

In add/remove I see java db 10.x
and java 7
and java 16 update 17

I will remove those extra entried when java is updated again just because I would like to follow the addage: if it ain't broke don't fix it! For now, anyway.

thanks for your help and this clears up many confusions I have had about the java in the past.
