I have used the link in Secunia PSI to get the latest Java Update. I have Firefox 3.5 Browser so the update downloads to my Desktop. The update begins OK but halway thro it all comes to a halt with the 25099 "Error message Java set up unzipping core files failed" I have attempted the install many times since 5th Nov and each time it fails with same message. I DO NOT want Yahoo Toolbar so untick that box prior to install. Could this be the reason for the failure? I have checked at Sun Java and the answer seems to be that they don't know cause of this error but a way round it to uninstal the current Java 6 and then try to install the update 17. However I'm reluctant to do thiis because the Update 17 might still fail and then I'd have no java at all.
Have to say that updating in Sun Java has never been straightforward, but this time there appears to be no solution over many days of trying.
I have Avast Antivirus and Outpost Free Firewall. Outpost has allowed the update action.
I have only general knowledge of computers, nothing much in the technical line so would appreciate simple instructions please!!
Thanking you,
Fazz. |

Try this:
CLEARING OUT OLD JAVA DROSS
===========================
JAVA now use an Uninstaller as part of the install process.
It works very well but ONLY removes the previous version.
To ensure U have no previous dross from very old versions on your PC & to make updating easier for the future I would recommend:
1.Install or double check U have the latest JAVA version (Currently Version 6 Update 17)from here:
http://www.java.com/en/
Once the update is complete go to Control Panel>JAVA icon>Update Tab and take the tick out of box marked "Check for updates auto ....." (This will prevent a an unnecessary file from starting each time U switch on your PC - PSI is already doing this job for U)
2. Now remove all the old dross from older versions.
The tool will do the job by deleting useless files from previous installs except for the version U have just installed
http://raproducts.org/
*This link takes U to the site - select the Windows Binary (zip) option.
*This will lead U to Sourceforge.net to download it.
*Save the download to desktop.
*Activate the desktop zip icon which exposes the JAVARA EXE file. Click it
*Select RUN when asked.
*Select your language.
*The tool will now appear on the desktop - select REMOVE OLDER VERSIONS
*Once complete select ADDITIONAL TASKS - tick all boxes & activate.
*Right click on the desktop JAVARA zip file & delete it.
3. If U wish to test your JAVA is working correctly use this test link: http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

FUTURE UPDATING OF JAVA.
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Now U have cleared the dross future updating is easy & should not include the procedure outlined above. All U will need to do is:
1. Go to Start>Control Panel>click on the JAVA icon>select the Update tab>click the Update Now button.
2. Once the update is complete go to Control Panel>JAVA icon>Update Tab and take the tick out of box marked "Check for updates auto ....." (This will prevent a an unnecessary file from starting each time U switch on your PC - PSI is already doing this job for U)
3. If U prefer not to have the JAVA icon in the System Tray when in use, open the Advanced Tab>look for Miscellaneous>click the + sign & then remove the tick from clearly marked box.
4. If U wish to test your JAVA is working correctly use this test link: http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
By using this recommended method the previous version will be automatically uninstalled & U are guaranteed to get the correct version for your OS.

Unfortunately I can't find a Java Icon in my Control Panel list. I thought that if I could locate the Java Console it would be a start but I can't locate that either!
I have the older version (last Nov 08 Java update) in my ADD OR REMOVE list, but that's all as far as I can see.
Would you advise using the Delete tool before I attempt another install of Update 17? If, after the delete, Update 17 still doesn't install I won't have any Java at all. If this be the case, is there an alternative Java?
I will attempt another install of Upd 17 before I make any deletes.
Thankyou for your help.

Having no Java will not affect the smooth running of Windows indeed, many do not install it at all.
I would remove anything JAVA/JRE/JSE you see in add/remove.
Then carry out the official Java workaround for your error message:
WORKAROUND
Step 1 : Completely delete content of the following directory: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\ (or alternate directory if you chose a non-default install location)
Step 2 : If Step 1 has permission issues due to files being locked or in use, restart your system
Step 3 : Now, completely delete content of the following directory: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\
Step 4 : Download and install Java.(The link is in my previous post)
Once installed check it is working & U have an icon in Control Panel then rerun all the actions outlined in my previous post.

After much searching and deleting of all the Sun Java on my system, then re-starting my PC, I was at last able to Install Update 17. But it wouldn't install without that restart! I tried and got the same 25099 message again. Performed the restart and the install went ahead in a flash.
The removal tool had deleted a couple of old files but I found another large whole file of Java which obviously wasn't in my ADD & REMOVE list, and was able to delete it all.
Anyway all seems to be working well now, and I can fall back on present knowledge should same circumstances occur in the future.
Thankyou very much indeed for your speedy replies to my queries.
Kindest Regards,
Fazz. |
