Hi,

Secunia PSI has started continuously telling me my installation of Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 is a security threat Class 4. My laptop came with Vista installed so there should be no XP stuff on it. I have had this computer with Secunia PSI installed for over a year and this problem arose within the last 4 or 5 months.

Anyone have any ideas what is going on and what, if any, action I can take to get rid of this situation?

Thanks,

Mary

Mary,
What path to the file does secunia give?

FINDING A VULNERABILITY FILE PATH
=================================

To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, use or switch to the ADVANCED interface, then :

1 Click on the + sign of the programme to "expand' it.
2 Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file. (Copy (CTRL+C) & paste (CTRL+V) the Installation Path of the file back to the Forum if U are unsure what to do next)).

Thanks for your quick reply.

I cannot switch to Advanced; it is not an option that is allowed for me perhaps because I use the free version. However, there is usually a path given for the file which I've used before. But, in the case of this XP issue, there is no path given. There is also no path given when I view "technical details." It almost seems to be a phantom hit or some kind.

I know that doesn't help much but that's all I have. I would have explored the file itself if there was one given.

Thanks.

Mary

One more think I should mention. When I expand the + and click on download solution, it simply takes me to the microsoft download website. I did not download because I'm not sure what it thinks it should download and I don't want to actually introduce XP onto my system and totally mess things up. Actually, I'd rather have XP than Vista but so be it. :-)

Mary,
The advanced mode is available to everyone.

When U open PSI click on the Overview Tab.

In the top right corner is SIMPLE & ADVANCED.

Click on advanced - The wording will go black & SIMPLE will turn blue.

I would be surprised if this feature does not work.

OK, I was wrong. Simple is always blue and advanced is always black for me so that means I have been in advanced mode all along - shame on me - LOL! Sorry about that - sometimes I'm an imbecile . . .

Anyway, that's where I've been getting my information. There is no path at all; only 3 icons to the right of the name of the offending program (download solution, technical details, link to forum). There is usually a path icon which I've used in other situations before to locate the file and determine what to do with it if downloading a solution doesn't fix the problem. But, for this situation, no path exists anywhere which is why I don't have a clue how to deal with it.

Thanks much.

Mary

Mary,
Very odd that U cannot identify the path. I have requested Secunia Support to look at this thread.

Hi Maryeduval

Can i get you to look into the registry.
you do this by going to start and type "regedit" in the search field and hit enter,
then the "Registry Editor" should open.
Browse to this location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

then i need you to give me the "Data" for these items
ProductName
CSDVersion
CurrentBuildNumber
BuildLab
CurrentType
CurrentVersion

Hi,

Well, the problem has now gone away. I ran the Microsoft updater (not from the Secunia Download Fix option) and whatever was there is now gone. However, this has happened in the recent past as well (I just didn't follow up on it) so I will keep your latest instructions on accessing the registry and next time it happens (as I suspect it will), I will follow your instructions and repost here.

BTW, I have Microsoft Updater set to run every day so I can be sure to get any security updates and it automatically reboots my system if required so typically it's not me who is doing the updates; but Microsoft.

For now Secunia says I again have no issues. Very strange!

Thank you both for your time and attention to this. I greatly appreciate the quick responses. I suspect I'll be back . . .

Mary

Me again,

After I posted my previous reply, I decided to gather the information you requested even though the problem is gone for now because I do think it will come back. Here's the information you requested.

ProductName: Windows Vista Business
CSDVersion: Service Pack 2
CurrentBuildNumber: 6002
BuildLab: 6002.18082.x86free.vistasp2_gdr.090803-2339
CurrentType: multiprocessor free
CurrentVersion: 6.0

That at least gives a baseline where I am right now when the problem is not happening. I suspect most of this information (except the most recent update) is the same as with the problem.

Thanks,

Mary

Hi

the information you gave me is the information we use to identify the operating system.
The information looks correct to me, so you shouldn't get the problem again.
