Morning Maurice ! I'm trying to understand what Command Prompt is all about. I've Googled and "Wikied" but my perception of it is still unclear. Am I right in saying it's an "interpreter interface" between self and one's OS ?
I was wondering if you could clarify it's uses for me...give me the benefit of a few nutshells from your experience perhaps ? Thankyou....in anticipation of your kind attention. Ian.

Hi MOGS;

I trust Maurice will be by in the morn. However, as I will be asleep when you both wake, allow me to put in my two cents worth (or pence in your case).

Command Prompt is to someone who's unsure what it's for, as a hornets nest is to a broom handle. It's good to be curious, just be careful.

The Command Prompt allows access to DOS Commands. DOS is what Windows runs on (or did, don't know about Vista or Win7).

regards;

Fred

Hi Mogs. I wasn't going to answer this one but since you addressed it to
Maurice.
However if you want an answer today,surf web crawler and/or Ask.com.
It is self explanatory with sufficient info for anyone wanting to know.
Frankly, I searched not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised when my search opened up these sites.

@MOGS
I think U have got the best steer by looking on the net. This link gives a flavour of what it can do:

http://www.computerhope.com/overview.htm

For many tasks I still use it but many prefer the mouse & a programme to do tasks for them.

As U can see there is a fear of DOS which mirrors the hype about the registry hence a decline in use.

The excitement on reboot after tinkering in the registry/DOS far outways shovelling snow or watching paint dry!

Thanks Maurice.
I'm getting a better idea of what it's about, and have already begun to muse to myself as to whether it's something I need delve too deeply into.I'd just like to familiarize myself to some reasonable extent. I've already had a go at tweaking Window's services with some success; I know what you mean about the exhilerating feeling at reboot....it seems to be addictive or more'ish ! I think my pc is "healthier" perhaps, than when I first got it !!
Thanks for the link,and have a very pleasant day.

Hi MOGS;

I knew you'd get some good input. My jest about the hornets nest does have some truth in it though. Make sure your back up of important stuff is current before "playing",

@MOGS
If U want to go "off piste" & dabble in the registry or DOS & get a bit stuck an email address to contact me is:

Address Deleted

I can also give U details of how to set up secure email if that is of interest.

That's very kind and thoughtful of you Maurice...very much appreciated. See how I get on; and I'll most definately use that e-address if things get a bit too complicated for me.
Yes please, if you could explain the set-up of the secure e-mail...very grateful; ta.

:) I'll have to remember that one.

Fred

p.s. Fixed original post (transposed hornets nest & broom handle) so it made sense.
