This involves removing the old version so I'll wait until Maurice, Anthony or another expert posts what to do.
I've kept a copy what Maurice said last November - it's probably still up-to-date but just in case . . . . . .

Dump the bloat ware!

If U must have it try this:

UPDATING SHOCKWAVE
==================

1. Uninstall Shockwave for your OS from the clearly marked link here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates...

2. Reboot to clear out any left over ocx files.

3. Rescan using PSI. Are there any outstanding files that are insecure? These should be cleared out before proceeding to serial 4.

Note 1: At this stage,if PSI finds any elements of Shockwave in the C:\i386 folder or on any drive other than C that is an OEM reinstallation partition (normally D drive) or a drive U use solely to backup your work U can safely create an ignore rule.

Note 2: The path on the C Drive to any remaining insecurity is important. Does it point to the Shockwave Player or another Adobe product that has a Flash element? If it points to Shockwave right click on the file(s) & delete them. If it points elsewhere reinstalling Shockwave will not necessarily clear the problem.

4. Reinstall Shockwave from here:
http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

5. If you wish to test your new Shockwave Player the link is here:

Hi Maurice. Don't we need Shockwave for lots of common programs? I remember your 'chocolate teapot' comments about the add-on that comes. When I installed v 11.5.6 just now, halfway through it said "downloading Extra Package" that I assumed was the add-on you like - NOT. So I tried to stop it. The download then crashed so I did it again!

Shockwave! Who needs shockwave? I have not had installed for years - at no time have I been requested to download it to "do something".

Pure bloat & because it has a Flash element just as vulnerable as other free Adobe rubbish.

Probably some of the 450 million loaded with bloat will use Shockwave ;-

http://www.adobe.com/products/shockwaveplayer/

at least a few developers :-

Take care
Anthony

PS : at the moment , the only programme showing a known vulnerability on my PC according to Secunia PSI is IE7 ; nothing is certain apart from death and taxes .

thanks you Maurice (tho' I missed your "chocolate teapot" and similar comments!)
Thank you too, Anthony. I've got two days off mid-next week so I shall uninstall Shockwave and wait for the "repercussions".
