I ran windows uninstall to remove Acrobat Reader 4.0 and it disappeared from the programs list, but continued to open when a PDF file was opened, even though Adobe Reader 9.3 was installed. Any hints on how to completely remove Acrobat Reader 4.0 completely from the machine?

Hello @mkahley ,

Are you using PSI ; if so what does it say about the "old" version you have lurking ??

Yes, using PSI. It keeps detecting 4.0 and sends me to the Adobe Reader download page for 9.3, which is already installed.

As a new member of the forum , to help resolve your problem , here are some instructions to help you first of all get the best out of PSI :-

1)use PSI in "advanced" mode ;
2)in the "settings" tab make sure that the box in the first/upper section is NOT ticked in order to have the maximum info available ;
3)tell us in which "tab(s)" your problem programme is located ;
4)in that tab , click on the + in the box at the left end of the programme , the page will expand ;
5)in the expanded page , tell us what is written in the "installation path" ;
6)in the "toolbox" section , lower down , the link "technical details" should confirm the installation path details ;
7)click on the link "open folder" and you will see more details concerning the location of the "problem" .

Posting these details will help the Forum help you , if/when you have a problem .

Let us know where 4 is lurking.

BTW, after deleting MS .Net 3.5 and a reboot, followed by a PSI Re-scan both are still detected as problems...

For MS/Windows you need to do a reboot and a new "full scan" not a "re-scan" . Is there anything in the "error" log - bottom right of scan tab/page ??

PSI sometimes takes more than one go to react.

Check that .Net has not left "old" files behind .

End of Life means that the version is no longer supported and is potentially vulnerable - it needs to go .

If you have a "similar" Reader 9.0 folder for 9.3. (should also show in the "patched" tab) , you should be able to delete the \acrobat 4.0\.. folder safely ; if you are unsure you could rename the AcroRD32.exe file by adding _old to the end of the file name .

What version is the .exe file showing .

If you are unsure or I have not been clear , ask first .
