Downloading and installing Ralink Technology, Corp. - Network - 802.11n Wireless PCI Express Card LAN Adapter results in loss of internet connectivity. System restore to earlier date restores ability to connect. Have tried the download and installation twice with the same result each time. Any suggestions? This is a Microsoft optional update.

How can the offending download be permanently rejected?

Hi TheShadow;

Is this adapter card new to this computer? If so, have you set it up with Network Setup Wizard? If not, are you using MS Update to update your adapter cards driver? Does MS Update ask you to restart the computer? If so, do you click OK? Is the adaper card working fine on the old driver?

Also, please post back with more info on your OS (XP, Vista, 7).

regards;

Fred

Thank you, Fred. OS is Windows 7 (64-bit). Win 7 was upgraded from Vista (64-bit). Computer is only 5 months old -- drivers for wireless PCI card were updated after installation of Win 7. Wireless connectivity has been working fine since drivers were updated after Win 7 installation -- No problems until optional MS wireless PCI card update was installed and computer restarted. Used System Restore to eliminate the MS update -- connectivity again worked fine. Tried installing the update once more. Lost connectivity again. Again used System restore -- connectivity restored.
As this is an optional update, I think it best to ignore the update, but would like to eliminate it from MS update notifications.
Appreciate your interest and assistance!

Hi TheShadow;

I'm not very familiar with Win7, but am aware that there were a few driver glitches (nothing like Vista though) with pre release/post Beta version. Haven't heard of anything on final version.

If you run across him, Maurice Joyce posts regularly to threads on this forum. He's very good at figuring out problems and he knows Win7. You might ask him if he'd care to look into this thread.

If you want to keep the update from showing in MS Update, click the "Hardware, Optional" on the left, click on the [+] (not the check box) next to the update to expand the discription. Click the "Don't show this update again" box, that will hide it. If for some reason you ever need one you've hidden, check for updates, on left, scroll down to "Options", click on the "Restore hidden updates", select the update you wish to restore. You can now install your lost update with the others (if any).

Hope this has been of some use.
