My hard drive has been repaired (wiped) due to age. Now I am unable to install adobe. It is not installed already as the hard drive is clean . When I try it appears to install, says installation complete but then cannot be found or used. I have tried advice given in relevant forums here but nothing works. Any help ASAP would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

Hi,
Flash comes in two versions - Internet Explorer, and everything else.
I'd verify I had the right version if I were you.

hi, and thanks for your prompt reply. Yes I have tried to install adobe for IE but still no joy. It appears in the add/remove programs in control panel but doesnt show any MB, so I guess it hasnt installed. I have removed it using the adobe uninstaller and tried to reinstall but still it is not there?
Any more options for me to try?
many thanks

Last edited on 3rd Feb, 2010 13:43 Hi,
I'm sure our user community will be more than willing to help, but since this problem specifically relates to an Adobe product (not having anything to do with Secunia products), you may get better results asking on the Adobe forum, or contacting Adobe support.
Hope this helps.

@jobil84

My correctly installed and running Flash also does not show Mb in "add/remove" .

To find if Flash is working and where it is , you could do this using PSI ; do you have PSI installed ?? Do you know how to use PSI in it's advanced mode ??

Last edited on 3rd Feb, 2010 15:49 Hi,
The PSI is the Secunia "Personal Software Inspector". It detects all Microsoft and all-to-most 3-party applications. It helps personal users keep their software up-to-date, as the by-far largest treat to the common user is unpatched vulnerabilities in third-party software installed to their machine (An example could be Adobe Flash).

You can download the PSI from my signature. Most people on this forum are PSI users, and the forum is intended primarily for help relating to Secunia products.

Hope this helps.

PSI can be found :-

At the top of this thread page is the blue link "Community" and to the left is a grey link "vulnerability Scanning" ,click on it opens a page with 3 choices , the central one is for personal use , click te link and you come to this page :-

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal

Users of PSI come to this Forum when they have a problem in updating a programme shown to have a potential security vulnerability .

Normally you should find Adobe Flash Player on your main drive ("C") in the C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\.. folder .

IF you have both IE (ActiveX) and Firefox (NPAPI) installed all folders (8 usually - 3 for each version and two common) will be found here .

See if Flash is there .

Anthony

The Adobe Flash Player does not appear in the list of programs. It is a browser plugin. To check if it is installed in Internet Explorer go to Tools>Manage Addons. It should be listed as Shockwave Flash Object. For Firefox goto Tools>Addons>Plugins and look for Shockwave Flash. Do you get an error message when you go to a website which tries to use Flash?

Hello jobil84 ,

Have you found your Flash folder on your main drive??

Do the videos on YouTube load but not run ??

Do they run with no sound ??

Have you rebooted your computer since the last time you installed Flash ??

Hello, first time here. In your manage add ons, make sure the Shockwave Flash Object is Enabled and it is vs 10.0.42.34. Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash. Right click on the Flash folder and ensure that the contents are listed as follows: Flash10d.ocx, FlashUtil10d.exe, Uninstall_activex.exe and install.log. There should not be any other files there. Hope this helps.

After I posted I realized I should have asked you if you knew how to get to the Flash folder. Please post back if you don't and I would be glad to give you directions.
Thanks
Nova

Hello jobil84 ,

If you are new to computers , you will find you have to learn/understand some basic things you need to do and the words/jargon used .

I believe that the best way to progress is to have someone (a friend) sit with you and help you or maybe take some courses .

Forums like this one will also help but are easier with a basic grounding .

It might help - if you don't already know - to know how files are set up and available to you on your Hard Drive ; here is a description of "windows explorer" which might help you :-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Explorer

"Windows Explorer" is very different to your browser "Internet Explorer" . The article is long and may seem complicated (it is for me) , but it mentions lots of things and words commonly found when using your computer , a quick read through may shed some light here and there

Hope this is helpful to you .
Anthony

hi again, I have checked in add on and shockwave is enabled and the correct version. I still cannot find the file? any help.
I do have a basic grounding in computers and have indeed done some courses but even the person who wiped and repaired my computer is stumped as to the cause on this problem, so at least I dont feel totally useless!
thanks in advance

To get "explorer" :

click the start button , then click on my computer , this should open "Windows Explorer"

or

double click on the "my computer" icon on your desktop

or

press the "windows key" and "E" on your keyboard (at the same time)

in the right** side (or pane) of explorer , double click on the first/top** ("C") drive , in the new page click on the "Windows" folder , now look for and click on the "System32 folder" , find and click the Macromed folder find and click the Flash folder .

Tell us the names of the files you find .

You have just followed this path I posted for you above (yesterday) :

"Normally you should find Adobe Flash Player on your main drive ("C") in the C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\.. folder ."

IF you install PSI from Secunia , you will find things easier (in both senses of the word) .

Ok . These are all ActiveX files for IE - nothing for Firefox ; they are mix of the up to date normal 10.0.42.34 version and the 10.1.51.66 latest Beta version. Neither seem to be a complete set , a bit of a mess .

Even if you still have a flash uninstaller on your comp. , go here and read all the instructions and download anew the "uninstallre" for windows .

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

BEFORE you run the uninstaller close IE and as many other programmes as you safely can , THEN run it and then reboot your Comp., and then go back and tell us what (if anything) is in the Flash folder .

Don't let it have it's way .

I think you will need to use a file killer to clean up. They are very effective and very final .

I do not have the time to finish this with you right now , so unless Maurice Joyce takes up the reins , I would suggest you wait for me to come back to you (in Some 18 hours) .

Best I can do for now.

Take care
Anthony

PS :Are their any other folders in the Macromed foldre ??

Hello jobil84

Two general points :-

Don't forget that you should regularly "back up/store" anything you cannot afford (photos , writings ,etc) to lose away from your comp. (eg : on disk). Computers break when you least want them to do .

Before you do big things like downloads or cleaning , set a System Restore Point .

What security software do you have ?? Do you have MalwareBytes' Anti Malware (MBAM) FREE version ??
Are both IE and Firefox up and running properly ?? Are you aware that Secunia cannot confirm any advice given by people on here , other than their staff ??

Come back when you are ready , I'm around for a few hours .

Anthony

Good enough , go here and download the FREE version , it is a top class malware hunter killer ; I use it once a week as an "on-demand scant" to check on my main security system .

It also has FileAssassin in it's toolbox which we'll use on Flash :-

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Post when it's done and I'll give you (easy:) instructions.

In the MBAM screen use the "update" tab to check for updates (you need to do this manually each time before you scan -it's quick) .

Copy these instructions and close all browsers , etc. , as before .

Goto/click -> "More Tools" tab -> "run tool" button (just under the File Assassin name .

A window will appear and it is like "explorer" and you have to navigate (using double clicks) to the the Flash folder and show the files ; one click higlight the file and it should show exactly in the first box below the the pane , next to the box is a button which says "open" - I hope , mine speaks to me in French!!

The window will disappear and a message will appear telling you what is going to happen and naming the exact file , if you are happy that the details are correct , agree the deletion .

If there is more than one file in the Flash folder , repeat the operation.

This deletion is final . Only use this tool when ALL else fails and madness looms - always ask first.

Shockwave should be in the \systam32\Adobe\ .. folder

you want the \system32\Macromed\Flash\.. folder

ignore shockwave for now , even if there is a Director or shockwave player there (in Macromed).

OK , to be sure : reboot and recheck the flash folder using "explorer" . If the Flash folder is empty then ;-

You need a separate plug-in/version of Adobe Flash Player for Firefox and IE :-

To update both Firefox (NPAPI) and IE (ActiveX) , I first consider that the "new" installers will remove the "older" version during the update . This still means that all the programmes that may use Flash are closed and quit (this includes right clicking the tray bar icon and exiting , etc (this includes PSI if you have it) for the installer to do a proper job . NPAPI will be running in Firefox and not much else :)), unlike the ActiveX :((

(( There is a long discussion about this on this thread - if you ever find time to read it :-

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/313...

))

To update both , I go here first (always in Firefox):-

http://www.adobe.com/

click on get Adobe Flash , which takes me here :-

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP

I uncheck the free McAfee scan then click "Agree and Install" . Firefox then shows that it has blocked the process , this is the the dreaded download manager which no body wants . So I close the message - do NOT agree it -using the x radio button end right of yellow message bar)
and click/agree the new download message .

I then download/save , NOT run , the installer to where I want , close everything immagineable and run (the installer)

For IE , I go to the second link , select and click the (pale blue) link for a different OS or browser , select my OS from the dropdown menu , click continue and IE/Actvex installer is offered as first choice .
Click "agree and install and save where you choose .
Close everything and run .

If you go to the first link using IE , it will load the ActiveX version but usually does not stop "extra" bits coming as well !

Normally , NPAPI and ActiveX install in the same folder. They each have three files and the xpt and log files are common .

Are you saying that you have downloaded both of versions of flash (for Firefox and IE ) and they show as 8 files in the \Macromed\Flash\.. folder . Can you see them in IE and Firefox as "plug-ins" using -<"tools" ->"add-ons" ??

What are the versions in the folder/plug-ins ?? use :-

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html

to check each browser .

using Firefox , i see

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/reply/34...

with a link saying "Get Adobe Flash Player"

which takes ms here

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=BUIGP

i deselect McAfee and click on "Agree and Install now"

I get a yellow banner acroos the top of this page and it stops :-

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/thankyou/xpi/?ins...

i close the banner with the red x button (extreme left) and click on the pale blue "click here to download" link just ubder "THANK YOU".

What can you not do ??.

IE should work on it's own .

You can use IE to download both versions (changing the names in my Firefox instructions , so to speak). I find Firefox more controllable , that's all .

I need to know what IE versions are showing - there may also be a flie missing in the folder so I need the list .

What exactly is the youTube message ??

PS: I'm running out of time again , sorry to say .

Hi Anthony Wells, I just wanted to back up ddmarshall's comment about Flash Player being a browser plug-in. It is not a program per se even tho Adobe lists it in the program section.

Also just a comment regarding your statement "Are you aware that Secunia cannot confirm any advice given by people on here, other than their staff". I am a new member here and have read this forum for quite some time and have a lot of respect for you and Maurice Joyce. I may have misunderstood and thought this was a community forum where users helped other users. Your statement gave me the impression that other users don't need to offer advice. Please clarify this for me. If only yourself and Maurice Joyce can give advice, then that is fine, it is your website. I visit many other forums and users do help other users and I do also. Thank you, Nova

Hello Nova ,

You are right to point up the difference between a programme and a plug_in , however PSI call it a "program"
and (in my opinion) one needs to get to the "software files" in System32 in order to try to get to the bottom of things like Flash.

The Secunia folk are obvious by the RED logo above their name in the left panel ; everybody else is a Community member and more than welcome to contribute , the more the better from my (personal) point of view . I wanted jobil to know my limitations exactly.

Maurice Joyce seems to be about to move on and as I am not "techie" in the sligtest amount we all could be left out of depth . On this thread and in general , I would still say , if too mny people post at once , then advice could be blurred for the less experienced members ; however , something new or a missed angle can save tears/years of frustration :((

I suggested MJ might pick up the reins because he was involved in a Flash file killing on another thread (mentioned above) and we are on our first contact.

IF you can help solve jobil's problem , please feel free as I'm almost out of time now.

Hope tha clears up any misconceptions from my part .
Anthony

PS : I was following a line of steps/logic which I hoped jobil and I could keep together on ; success is limited :((

hi anthony, sorry for the late reply, computer is freezing. I will go and check what the exact files are in macromed and forward them. I have appreciated your time and help and have learned a lots.
I hope to get to the bottom of this and if anyone else can input I will be grateful
You tube says access denied, java disabled or you dont have the latest version of flash.
Have ensured java enabled in both IE and firfox

files in macromed under flash are
1....flash 10d ocx
2... flash util 10d
3... uninstall flash active x
4.... install text document size 33kb

Thank you Anthony Wells for clarifying things for me. You are correct the "software files", which I refer to as the Flash folder (same thing) is one of the first things to check. That and the add ons for the ActiveX Control Shockwave Flash Object for IE and Shockwave Flash for FF. The 4 files in Flash folder and the SWO/SWF are Flash Player. There are many variables involved in getting those files/add on correct. I also agree that too many posts can confuse members. Several things can prevent an Uninstall as well as an Install and among them are Permissions(with IE7 & IE8 especially), Anti-Virus programs, Firewalls, any Flash programs running while Uninstalling(which would include Secunia). My approach is to take these things into consideration PRIOR to Uninstalling/Installing, thereby ensuring success. I have found it is easier than troubleshooting afterwards. Thanks again for your explanation. MJ will indeed be missed. I am not "Techie" but do considerable research and feel that I could contribute solid advice regarding FP. I don't have all of the answers, and get perplexed as well as others do. Will take a look at jobil's status this afternoon and hope I can be of help. It is very frustrating when your computer is not working as it should. Nova

Hi jobil, I read over your thread and did not find what version of IE you are using; please post that back for me.

Please refer to my post of 2/4/10 00:58. Are those files I listed there now in your Flash folder? (I don't need any FF info yet)
In your manage add ons, is Shockwave Flash Object..ActiveX Control..
Flash10d.ocx vs 10.0.42.34 listed and enabled?
While you are in the manage add ons, please post back all Java entries
(BHO's, ActiveX) with their versions.

Thank you,
Nova

Ok, thanks. Since you are using XP, I need you to go to Add/Remove and post back all Java entries and versions if listed, any entry of DLM (this is an Adobe Download Manager) any entry of a GetPlus. Since you have the 4 FP files in the Flash folder, you should see Adobe Flash Player ActiveX listing also.

Just to check that this is not down to your Internet Explorer Settings can you try:

InternetExplorer Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and then click Restore Advanced Settings.

then go to the Security tab and click Reset all zones to default level if it is available.

Then restart Internet Explorer.

Can you confirm that you have Shockwave Flash Object in your Addons?

Ok, Java 6 update 18 is correct, FP also. This time, click on Start, Control Panel and double click on Java. When it opens to Java Control Panel, click on Java. Does it say Java Runtime Environment Settings?
If so just close out. Please recheck your add ons, "View and Manage your Internet Explorer add-ons". There is a "All add ons" with a drop down arrow. From what I understand there are 3 places in IE8 that list add ons. I am looking for 3 additional Java listings that install with the JRE Version of Java. They are ActiveX Controls and they are listed as Java plug-in 1.6.0_18. I am trying to confirm that you have the correct version of Java and the add ons. Java works with Flash Player as you probably already know since youtube and other websites remind people:-)
Thanks, Oh I am in the U.S.and the EST zone.

ddmarshall, he does not want to reset IE, as you know this will remove all favorites plus other unwanted actions. Not needed as it will only muddy the water. No where does Adobe suggest this. There are other factors involved here, stay tuned:-)

Ok, jobil, we have confirmed that you have the required FP files in the Flash folder; Shockwave Flash Object with the correct version is in add ons and enabled; the correct version of Java with all BHO's and ActiveX Controls are installed. Now barring anything unforeseen, using IE, go to the add ons that the Java plug-ins Java(tm)Plug-in 2SSV and JQSIEStartDetectorImpl are and DISABLE both of them, say ok. Reboot and then try youtube and post back the results.
Thanks
Nova, Oh I didn't suggest resetting IE, that was ddmarshall.

Ok jobil, let me check a couple of things and get back to you. It is 4PM here. Perhaps I'll post later and you can take a look when you like.

If youtube is still giving that same message, they are picking up something other than the current FP. Sometimes also something may be blocking the viewing of Flash content. I'll explore those. I first wanted to be sure you had the required files for Flash Player and Java, which you do. So we'll move on from there. As of now, we don't know what the problem is, but we know what it isn't and that is the first round:-)

Thanks for your cooperation.

ddmarshall, sorry, I misread your comment. On the Advanced Settings, you would have to know what the current settings are and I would think there may be valid reasons for them. I know I have mine set differently than Default for a reason due to a couple of programs I have installed so I would hesitate suggesting that at this time.

The Security settings resetting to Default I think raises the same concern. The Internet setting that jobil uses should have been ok, otherwise the Install of FP would have failed. However, it may have a bearing on viewing, which should be set on Medium. Going to Default across the zones would not be something that I would suggest at this time.

These are my opinions based on my own experience with my system and in helping others with Flash Player issues. I am pretty conservative and research and want to know exactly how certain changes will affect my system before making them. I don't like to experiment, too risky. I don't use registry cleaners either:-)

Now using IE, go to Tools, click on Internet Options, when it opens click on the tab at the top "Security", click on the "Internet" globe.
Look for Security level for this zone, does it say Medium? If not, move the slider until it does, then say ok and close the window.

If it doesn't, do you have Custom settings?

Also, Norton may be an issue here, which we'll take a look at.

Thanks ddmarshall:-) Wish I had a brother-in-law that could do things like that. In my family it seems the guys either don't use computers or wouldn't know how to use them anyway. A lot of the complications in my opinion started with Vista>IE7>IE8>Win7(with IE8); add all of the third party apps, a lot with poor code and so conflicts abound. With Microsoft, many restrictions, administrator issues and on and on. I understand Security but you have to work around it. Many Anti-Virus programs with Firewalls are preventing Installs of programs, some of downloading ActiveX Controls and blocking viewing of Flash Content. I could add to this list but rather not. It is unbelievable what some users go through to try to get FP installed. You may have a point since it was a new install, but being the conservative that I am, I want to know when I dig a hole, I can crawl back out:-)

Ok, we keep ruling things out, which is good. Not good on warnings from Norton, can you close down all open windows and run a full scan with Norton? I would do that first and now.

P.S. I just remembered that Anthony had you download Malwarebytes. Is it still installed? If it is I would run it instead.

Have a great night. We are under a Winter Storm Warning, a lot of snow expected with wind. Putting aside extra water and getting the candles ready in case electric goes out. Washington D.C. expecting 30 inches of snow! It has been snowing here since 2PM and it is now 6:30PM and it looks like it will be all night.

Hello jobil ,

I am in and aruond for a couple of hours before switching to Croke and Twickers (literally as my PC displays on my TV screen); So what happened with MBAM ?? Did you update before you ran it (it can have more than update each day) and did you select the bottom/second "perform full scan" option before running it ?? What results are showing ??

2 questions :-

1)have you or the B in L updated XP since you reinstalled it ?? Also pls right click your "my computer" ->Properties in the window ->General tab and tell us what is written under "system" (there should be four lines of info).

2)what is your version of Firefox ?? You can find it using the "help" tab top leftish (when you open the browser) and click "about mozilla firefox" in the dropdown menu .

If you're not a Giunness lady what will you be using to toast your lads (just supposing they hammer the Italians) ?? Watch out for the French , they can be sublime on a good day , or not !!

Post back when you can .

Slainte
Anthony

Hi jobil ,

Post the results when you can .

The service pack is now SP3 and SP2 can react strangely with some software . There may also be security concerns :((

I tink** (depending on MBAM) that updating things Microsoft/Windows should take priority , at least over Flash (better chain up the young "urban guerilla"). What make/version of IE are you using ??

At least you are making progress in your degree studies in computer science !

Morning here jobil, nice to see another bad guy bite the dust:-)

There is something that is preventing you from viewing youtube. When the Flash Player files are correct in the Flash folder and the Shockwave Flash Object in the add ons likewise, then we have to look at other ActiveX and BHO's. I think we need to take a look at all of the add ons you have. You don't need to list the Java or Microsoft ones. Just all of the others. Norton, like I said may play a part, however I tend to rule that out at this time. The reason being, Norton interferes when trying to install FP and you overcame that. Since we are dealing with the Browser, and FP being a browser plug in, any add on or BHO, or extension etc all have an affect on IE. Some are good and some are bad. We need to see if there are any bad ones. That would be my suggestion.

A lot of snow here:-)

Hello everyone ,

Blue sky , brigt sun , a bit windy (te mistral) and 15°C/60°F - no snow either :))

Tw quick points before te next match :-

Quite a few people have had problems going from IE 7 to 8 on XPSP3 - me included . So going from IE 6 to 8 in SP2 may be having consequences - it is Windows after all . I would certainly take it into consideration.

An "old" trick to overcome this specific problem (and that of the "overview page not showing correctly in PSI) is/was to go to the flash folder , double click the FlashUtil10d.exe file and a window will appear saying there is an update (I know , I know), accept the installation and the files seem to reset . Do this with IE closed and sometimes a reboot helps .

Green boys did OK , but I don't/didn't like the French Ref he allows a very slow game to develop .

Hope Rolland is better at Twickenham - my Welsh half takes on my English half - being a métise .

Bonne Soirée
Anthony

PS : "Google" Adware.funweb and you'll see it comes with a toolbar and BHO , so make sure MBAM got it all .

Hi Jobil, I know you didn't want to hear about listing the add ons:-) I just had a hunch you had quite a few. I have worked with users that have had 70 add ons and Toolbars and then wonder why IE or any browser for that matter doesn't work:-)

Hi Anthony, your last post about clicking on FlashUtil10d.exe is confusing me. Jobil has all of the correct files in Flash folder. Perhaps I missed something? Too much snow? :-)

Do the best you can with the add ons and Toolbars jobil.

P.S. No I don't need the versions.

Nova ,

Belive me it only works when you "appear" to have te right files in the folder . If it works fine , if it doesn't , no harm done . Try it yourself if you don't believe me.

No time to argue .

Gotta go.

Ok, fine with me. Not arguing, just didn't understand it. Whatever works! Now, since my FP is working perfectly, you know that I am not going to disturb them in any way, not going to even look at those files. Ha-Ha Well, when the beta is released, guess we will all have to.

Thank you jobil. I see some possible culprits:-) On the 2 Java, for now I would keep them disabled, since they are known problems. I have had them disabled ever since Java installed them with the latest update and have no problem with youtube, online radio, online TV or any website that uses Flash.

Take a break while I go over the add ons. Were you aware that Internet
Explorer works fine with no add ons whatsoever? With add ons the rule is the less the better. Now I understand everyone has add ons for various reasons and the good ones are great! The other ones, not so much:-)

Hi jobil, I would Disable all add ons and BHO's, assistants, etc. except the following: Microsoft related, Adobe and the current Java that is already enabled. Then I would reboot and try youtube.

Just for some add'l info on the "fun web products and the several "my web search" related add ons. I would suggest you do a search on each one. Anthony may already know about this group. They are considered malware on various forums and are very difficult to get rid of. This info came from cnet forums, safer-networking(spybot S&D) bleepingcomputers and other sites. Cnet suggested using Malwarebytes to rid the system of these. I'm just relating what I read today about them.

I couldn't find anything on "cnavext BHO class or max en toolbar x2 or data ctrl class nor screen saver installer class.

Also, Adobe mentions in regard to Norton: "You need to ensure that your firewall or utility settings are set to allow ActiveX Controls and Flash (SWF) content." You can read the paragraph here:
http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_tn_19166_en-us Look for item#5 Re: Internet Utilities blocking Flash Player

Keep in mind Adobe doesn't say "all", just in some cases, so it might be something to check.

hi, I did as you said and disabled named add ons but no you tube in IE but you tube videos playing in firefox.
My kids use the Zwinky.com site and have done the last 2 years. My web search is from this site. Maybe that caused the initial problem in us having to wipe the hard drive?
My kids are devastated that they cant enter zwinky as the page wont load. Should I be concerned regarding this site? Do you have any info on it? Still a mystery regarding you tube in IE? Should I leave said add ons disabled (am anxious re: norton and pc security.)

Hi jobil, I can't think of anything we have not covered that would prevent IE from working. Well good to hear FF is working. So we know that one or more of the add ons you disabled affected FF. I want to take a look at the Zwinky.com site and see what else I can find out. I don't know anything about it at all. Is it only available using IE and not FF? I have more info on Norton and will check that also. We don't want to disable your Security, just need to see if there is a component that may be affecting the IE browser in a negative way. The add ons that you disabled in my opinion would have no effect on the Security of your computer. Go to your system tray and right click on your Norton icon. You can see it is still running and you can look at the various components there also. I don't see anything of your add ons that you disabled that you would need right now. You can still search Google or Bing.com. Whether Zwinky.com from where the web search related add ons was the problem with the hard drive, I can't say. But from what I read, the reason it is hard to get removed from the computer is that it writes to the registry. There are instructions on how to do it. Perhaps you could ask your bro-in-law. I'll get back to you when I have some further info. Oh, I almost forgot. I didn't see any media player add ons. Do you have Windows Media Player or Real Player or any other player installed?

hi Anthony, on the zwinky page can you use the dropdown to enter zwinktopia? All very strage to me but this is where the kids go. Our page wont load but the home page will. We are thinking that it has something to do with flash. It wont work in either ff or IE.
Hope you enjoyed the rugger today:)

Hi there ,

Rugby was very exciting , even if Rolland (an Irishman who speaks French !!) was a bit iffy as ref at Twickers ; now my English half of me is celebrating whilst commiserating with my Welsh who is drowning his sorrows :)) :(( Drinks in all hands :))

I'm nearly out of time again ; but if I open Zwinky it tries to download WS and/or make it my web page and search engine (you have to untick the options , which is always a bad sign) and even though I was working in my sandbox (don't ask) My Internet Security Suite got very uppity and blocked the main .exe file from downloading .
I stopped at this point as I didn't like anything I was seeing . I did see enough site activity to assume (never a good thing) that Flash was loaded and working on the site (confirmed by Chrome in it's Task Manager).

I would call it very aggressive adware and would avoid it given the choice :ie : this way danger lies .

How did you get Ff to play YouTube videos , clever girl ???

Anthony

PS : Winkitopia probably won't load in Ff since MBAM killed something , should have told you to quarantine first or copy the exact details of what as found , sorry :(

not sure anthony how I got utube on ff. Kids in tears re: zwinky, but I guess it seems dangerous. Is there any way we could load it given that malware has possibly blocked it?
can I try again and quarantine?

Hi jobil & Anthony, I see it is getting late over there. Well, I haven't checked that latest link that Anthony listed for my web search.
However, that group sounds like something to stay away from. Glad to see Anthonys' Internet Security blocked the .exe. Jobil, did you have Norton Security when you first went to that web site and installed that group? Well, whatever security you had running should have at least had a warning.

Anthony, if you are still around. Can Malwarebytes be run offline? The reason I ask is that I was wondering if Norton somehow blocked Malwarebytes when jobil ran it earlier? Cnet advised to run Mbam to get rid of the my web search group. Perhaps you have to tell Mbam to do certain things, I have never had to use it.

Jobil, on your Windows Media Player, yes you should have a couple of ActiveX Controls for it in your add ons. Files wmp.dll, also an audio _MID Moniker and a Video_X_MS_ASF. Without those I don't think WMP will play. I don't know what version you have, but if it is an older one, I would update. I think the latest is vs 11 from Microsoft. I am just becoming familiar with Secunia, but they warned me of an old one I had that I didn't even know about.

I wish I had better information about the web search group. The only thing is do like Anthony said and run Mbam again. If anyone could remove it, they could. But I wonder if you can use the web site without all of the web search. This is new to me, so I don't have any answers.

Normally you keep rerunning MBAM until it comes up clean ; for similar "adware" (if I remember through the booze) bleeping computer say to rename the MBAM.exe file to zztoy.exe before you install it and run it off the desktop , Followed by
SAS in safe mode and then Eset A/V online .

I would need to check that tomorrow ; no harm in running MBAM as is , disable the add-ons and kill anything relevant through "Add/Remove" that relates .

That's me finished .

hi Anthony and Nova, Latest update re: adobe flash....
All installed in IE and FF. My rather wonderful Bro in law saved the day.
According to him norton was the problem.
Let me take this opportunity to thank you both for your help. It was a steep learning curve for me but Iam much the wiser for the process.

Nova, hope the snow has abated (we are to expect snow this week also...no end to this winter!!)
Anthony, I guess you are in the right spot, will remember you on my hols this year...enjoy the rest of the rugby :)

Best wishes to you both

Hi jobil, Well all is well that ends well. That is good news indeed!

Kudos to your b.i.l. When and if you have time, I would love to know exactly what of Norton caused the problem. I this week just learned a bit of info about CA (Computer Associates) These "Security" programs are causing more and more problems it appears.

Thanks for posting back.

Hello Méabh ,

See , Nelson was right . Well done , girl !!

Excellent weekend down here on the Med , with absolutely glorious weather ; still hanging on , but a bit cooler today . Riding my bike along the canals in Nature's winter colours of greens(:)) , browns , yellows and gold , all splashed with white horses , black bulls and so many birds (pink one are very pretty) . Quite sublime :)

I have two "personal techies" of my own who keep my PC alive , so keep the B in L tucked up , safe and warm .

Now the big question is : is it Guinness or Champagne for next match ?? - really will be a cracker in Paris .

Take care of the snow , Nova :(

Hi Anthony,
You really know how to make a girl jealous.....but
I have just returned from a brisk walk along the atlantic sea board, waves crashing, surfers dancing on white foam along the world famous surfer beach of strandhill, co, sligo, home the the famed Queen of Ireland (and my name sake) MAEVE! (spelling different).
Not quite the MED, and surely colder but beautiful all the same.
As for the tipple for Paris? No Guinness for me, YUCK!. Champers all the way.
Yes the B in L has been written into my will!
Thanks again for all you help and I really enjoyed the chat. :)
Poor Nova, seems the US is really getting snowed on... Sky news loves a drama!!
Off to the poly tunnel for some early spring planting:)
Cheers me dears

Me again , Méabh ,

Many years ago , I was based on Dublin for a year (Stillorgan) but for the most part was either in Bagenalstown in Carlow , Blue Ball in Offaly or Castlebar in Mayo :))

I (think) I passed through Co. Sligo on my way to a Bord na Mona research station in Co. Donegal and some golf at Bundoran.

You got lucky too .

Take care
Anthony

PS : can even remember dancing and jigging to the Royal Showband !!

Hey jobil and Anthony, I have no idea what you 2 are talking about. LOL
Sounds cool though. That description of where you are Anthony, green winter? Sounds like I better get my maps out. jobil, my maternal side is Scott/Irish, but I think the German side ruled:-) Anyway, it all sounds great over there. Yes, snow and more coming, 11 inches Saturday.
That is winter here. Fun talking with you both, interesting hearing about your areas. Take care. My project right now is the Global Setting, which is a different animal:-)

hi again Anthony.
Guess I did get lucky, if in sometimes an abscure way. The climate on the north west coast of Ireland can be unforgiving
not least on a Irish girls delicate skin:(
I am familiar, just about, with most ot the locations you mentioned but all to midlandy (except castlebar, of course) for me. Being a water sign I could never live too far from the sea:)
I have lived here for 9 years, being originally from The Pale (Dublin to the less knowing).
I hope some day in years to come, in replying to some thread from someone in Ireland to say, 'ah, yes, many moons ago I lived there but am well settled here in the south of France'!!

hi Nova, not too sure what we are talking about either!!
Global settings?? Anything to do with the myth of global warming. We have had our coldest winter in 40 years and its showing no sign of ending.
Not as cold as you though I am sure.
Havnt had a chance to ask my B in L what specific norton problem we had. I suspect he may never answer my calls again!! Really he is so good.
I really enjoyed the chat frm 3 corners of the world. It really is getting smaller by the day.
go raibh maith agat agus
Slan go foill( thankyou and bye for now)

MY GOD!!
Anthony, how did you know. One of my favourite bands of all time (after The Smiths):) Such a long time ago. I am a big music fan and have eclectic tastes..... 1 or 2 songs from the Spice Girls to Dixie Chicks my eldest guy ,I Hope, has the same.. Where is Jim Kerr now... not in The Pale anymore.... Ireland is too expensive, was and still is!!
I feel the Waterfront calling, but it must be Catherine Wheel!

Ther is a light and it never goes out....:)
Thanks Anthony.
Slan!

I remember it sooo well. On my birthday to boot:)))
That walk to freedom, sat watching it nursing a sore head, same as I am tonight!

Bon soir
