Everybody has got their own set-up and favourite...gotten by more or less extensive experience or not.
Personally, I've found subscribing to McAfee no hassle....it's oft recommended....security is tighter perhaps with a suite.
There again,I've found AVG and Threatfire work very well together...installed them on my son in law's pc, and no problems.
The Computeractive site is worth having a look at....all in plain English.

I have good experience with Avira. They have a pretty good Free version.
They also have Pro versions; I use Premium Security Suite. See www.avira.com for more info.

Norton Internet Security 2010 has had good reports and seems to have sneaked ahead of the competition for the moment, this seems to change as different companies update their versions.

Norton is testing v.4 of 360 at the moment and will will be similar to NIS 2010. If you buy v.3 you will be able to install v.4 free when it becomes available.

As said above it is very much personal choice as you will hear almost as many answers as people replying and many of these programs have their "fanboys" who will have nothing said against them.

Several free versions of anti-virus programs are availalbe it seems the Microsoft Security Essentials has had good reports.

Also agree with above regarding PCTools Threatfire which can be used with normal AV programs.

In my opinion you cant beat Avast, I have used it for the past 3 years and have never had a problem with my computer. I download A LOT from torrent sites and have never had a problem, Avast always catches the problem before it has a chance to do anything, also it DOESNT slow down my computer at all. I believe it is better to make your own Antivirus suite, I use Avast, Adaware, Spyware Blaster, Malwarebytes Anti Malware, Spybot Search and Destroy and WinPatrol, My Computer is nice and safe

Use this site to check how secure your computer is

http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2

check your Windows File Sharing and Common Ports vulnerabilities with the "File Sharing" and "Common Ports" buttons at the above site (very handy gives you an indication as to how safe your PC is whilst connected to the internet

THESE ARE MY RESULTS

File Sharing
Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

Common Ports
Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.

@12341234 ,

You can change your "user/screen" name in the "secunia proflie" tab in your PSI .

Gizmo's site is excellent :)) I always try to recommend it !!

Hi Mike;

Anthony is correct. To change your Username, open PSI, click on the "Secunia Profile" tab, clear the Username box, enter a new name, click on the "Save Profile" button.

If the Username is unavailable, try another.

I've noticed you are quite interested in AV products, hope your up for other things as well.

regards;

Fred
