I have Google Earth v4.3.7204.0836 (beta) - pictures from satellites. The Google "magic lantern" van visited this area a few months ago and I've been told that 'street views' are now on-line.
This requires downloading the latest version of Google Earth - version 5??
I know someone who did this and as a result every time he accessedthe internet it took forever. He scanned his system and found that he'd acquired 36 tracking cookies. He believes it must have happened when he downloaded the latest Google Earth.
Has anyone else experienced this?
(I did search but found nothing.)

Hello Taffy,

I have the following - Google Earth: 5.1.3533.1731; Build Date: Nov 12, 2009 - which includes “street view“.
Checked for updates, with none found, so I'm guessing it's the latest (non beta) version.

I can't confirm or deny your “friends“suspicions re. tracking cookies, but haven't knowingly had this problem personally.

I run Spybot S&D, and in the last several times it's found nothing. Also have recently started using IOBit Advanced Systemcare (free v.), which has picked up a few (+/- 5 ish) low risk cookies (can't remember if they were specifically tracking ones, though), and I just got rid of them.

G.E. is not without it's minor operational glitches, I've found. I don't know if it requires high CPU usage, but other progs. / apps. do run a bit slower - including internet connections and site loading - but not desperately so.

If it's left running (on the taskbar) for some time, this slowness does seem to get worse, and sometimes I've returned to the message:-

"Google Earth has encountered a problem and needs to close"; for no apparent reason.

These symptoms were present for me in previous versions, also.

But I think street view is worth having, and I would just use it (G.E.) for when you need to, and exit when finished.

And monitor any abnormalities, and run a security / clean up application (which I'm sure you do anyway), from time to time.

My OS is XP Pro SP3.

By chance I did research on Google/Doubleclick as part of an IT exam. From what I found I personally would never install or use anything Google nor will I accept mail from a google or gmail domain.

Let me know if interested in looking at my research & I will post a throwaway email address for U to use.

One last piece of food for thought.

Straying a little of the original point, but relating to what Maurice wrote above re. all things Google.

I use Google Earth - as and when I need to - sometimes a lot and then not at all for a while.
I have Chrome as a secondary browser - used it a bit more recently due to uncertainties re. Ff.
Google is also my selected search engine with Ff.

Chrome updated last week (18/3) to v.4.1.249.1036

Anyway, having seen Secunia Thread relating to vulnerability in XP Pro, I ran PSI scan to see if I was effected.

As it completed, the program change notification bubble indicated Google Chrome 4.x and Gears.

I went to the file location and there was a new file 4.1.249.1042 - clicked on Properties, and for Created it showed:

25 March 2010, 13:38:12

I hadn't even opened Chrome today, let alone checked for updates. To my knowledge, this is the first time Chrome has updated and installed, without any input from me (especially only one week after a security fix update).

Make of this what you will - but the good news is, that both versions ('til now) are secure.

@Taffy, I Don't use Google Earth, dial-up tooooooo slow. Haven't had any probs with other Google products, but understand Maurice's concerns (that he's stated before). A personal opinion is that people use what they like & like what they use. If no problem exists for you, fine. If problem exists discontinue use. Just be careful where you download from, best straight from Google site.

Fred

p.s. Hope you had the curtains pulled when the 'van' drove past!

thank you everyone for your help. I've passed on the comments.
A plumber was here when the magic lantern van arrived. He'd parked his van on the drive and so now has a free advert.
Come to think of it - he should have watched where the ML van was going and tried to get in on loads of pictures!
PS It wasn't me who won the £30+m Euro Lpttery last night so please don't post begging requests on the "IE8 German Government" super-thread!

@bjm

Of little value to anyone not resident in the UK.

Large parts of it deal with well known privacy violations but my research was set against UK Law & to a lesser extent European Law.
