Mozilla Thunderbird 2.x is Cat. 4 threat; but when I update it, it causes my computer to slow down and freeze. Can I do anything about the threat without updating? Thanks.

This is the second time in about a week, that someone has queried TB 2.x
I find this a bit strange - I am running TB v.3.0.3, (with 3.x being around for some little while, now) which is the latest version, without any problems.

Is this version not offered as the solution?

Click on the Thunderbird Help menu - and then click "Check for Updates".

After any update, it is always best to re-boot, especially if something's not running as it should (but normally not necessary with Mozilla programs).

Version 3.0.3 is offered. Updating to that version is the problem. Also after reading your reply, I decided to try v. 3.x. It froze on me first thing out. Version 2.x works fine, but is a threat.

Hi Cara46

When there was a similar problem brought up about Thunderbird, E. Petersen, of Secunia wrote the following:

"The latest secure Thunderbird - according to Secunia rules - is 2.0.0.24. "

This was written on 22 Mar. This may have changed in the last week.

You can try this version (if it's not the one you're trying to update from).

To answer your original question; you cant change the threat, if that's what Secunia is reporting.

You can consider the following:

1) Run an insecure Thunderbird - not advisable, but as the average Secunia score is about 95/96%, there must be many users with insecure programs.

2) Change your e-mail client.

3) Try to find out why TB update is causing your slowing and freezing problems. There must be some conflict between your system and the latest (3.0.3) TB.

If you choose "3)", then you need to come back with info. pertaining to your computer, your Windows OS, the full version number of your existing Thunderbird installation, and exactly what happens between installing 3.0.3 and it freezing.

This is slowly moving outside of my field of knowledge, but with the above info someone may be able to offer advice.

Thanks, TiMow,
I'll try Thunderbird help again. If I don't fix it, I think I'll try another e-mail program. I hate Windows Mail and love Thunderbird!

@cara46

This thread indicates that using the programme internal updater gave problems in the past and a complete uninstall/reinstall of the latest version was needed from Mozilla download ; have you tried that ?? :-

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/341...

Another member had a problem of version 3.x freezing when trying to move large mail/files . I cannot find that thread but it was handled by a Secunia official direct ; you may wish to try them tomorrow at support@secunia.com

If I remember correctly , turning off/disabling "program monitoring" in the PSI "settings" tab had a beneficial effect .

Hope this helps.

Hi Cara

(Good advice from Anthony)

One thought, though - I hadn't recommended a full uninstall, 'til now, as I'm unsure what happens to all of your archived mail, when you do this.

I have been unable to find the location of my mail folders, either within the Thunderbird file tree, or outside of it.

Due to the time difference, it's probably a bit late in the day now.

Hope things work(ed) out OK.
