I tried installing Java update 19 but I am getting an Error 1723 that is preventing me from continuing on with the setup.

This program recently became a threat on my Secunia PSI list so that is why I was trying to install an update. I deleted the msxml6.dll file but I did system restore and they are back. I don't know what is the problem now.

I am running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bits edition on FW290.

Error 1723 indicates either U have a .dll file missing from your library or U have a virus.

A few questions.
When did U last complete a full anti virus scan on all your drives?

If U are absolutely sure it cannot be a virus what made U tinker with msxml6.dll?

By checking in Add/Remove how many versions of Java are installed?

Are all the updates installed via MS update? Worth making a run to see if it picks up any missing files.

Once I know a bit more I may be able to help.

I have Mcafee and I ran Malwarebytes right afterwards and there was no viruses found. I don't think it should be a virus issue.

As for tinkering with the msxml file, I was only trying to "fix it" since Secunia PSI had been giving me this error for 2 months now and installing msxml 4 didn't help either.

I guess I should just hit ignore under the msxml problems from now on.

I deleted the Java program and .exe file in Sys64 folder as the uninstaller wouldn't let me uninstall the Java update 18 and Java runtime module under Add/Remove Programs.

How far have U got now?

Have U now got Java installed correctly?

What are the paths to the MSXML problem?

FINDING A VULNERABILITY FILE PATH
=================================

To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, use or switch to the ADVANCED interface, then :

1 Click on the + sign of the programme to "expand' it.
2 Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file. (Copy (CTRL+C) & paste (CTRL+V) the Installation Path of the file back to the Forum if U are unsure what to do next.

Well I upgraded the windows using the installation folder I have. It asked for if I wanted to stay connected to internet as windows as installed / upgraded and I said 'yes' which took care of the msxml problem in Secunia (ha if I only knew that before) but Java problem is still there.

I thought if I ran the install / upgrade then the files would be fixed but I am still getting error 1723 in java install and get a not enough storage error when I try to install MSinstaller 3.1. I could post the file paths but I already had gone before the problem happened to those place and deleted the said files like java.exe.

I was able to uninstall java runtime TM (not Java update 18) and my Secunia score is back to 100% but when I can't install java update 19. Java update 18 can't be uninstalled either as it says it is missing some .dll file to run "uninstall" in Add / Remove programs.

I guess I could live without java, couldn't I? It is not like I need it for running youtube or any other videos...

U can live without Java but U have part of version 18 installed - that version has a vulnerability so I am surprised PSI is saying U are 100%.

I would strongly recommend U get Java up to date. If U want to do that here is a solution:

Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
=======================
Although U will see items listed this tool should NOT be used to remove any part of Microsoft Office 2007.

If a programme is installed using Windows Installer it can be removed by using the Microsoft Cleanup Utility.

Download it from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Once downloaded, open the programme & scroll up & down looking for any JAVA entries.

Once found,highlight them one at a time & click the remove button (bottom right)

Reboot once U have removed them all.

After the reboot are there any Java entries showing in Add/Remove or PSI? There should not be any. Once U have established there are no Java entries click here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Both 32 & 64 Bit downloads are available. Download/install them both one at a time.
U can use the 32 Bit browser to install the 64 Bit version.

Rescan with PSI - is it showing two versions of Java that are secure?

I had found the uninstaller before but didn't use it since it said it was for MS Office.

PSI detected that i have patched version of Java 6.17.6.18, 6.19 (extension for firefox) and I have a full score.

THANKS :)

I am confused. Are U saying in Add/Remove U have these entries?

Java(TM) 6 update 17
Java(TM) 6 update 18
Java(TM) 6 Update 19

If this is the case PSI cannot be saying U are secure.

You must go to Add/Remove & uninstall these two items:
Java(TM) 6 update 17
Java(TM) 6 update 18

Now do a rescan & U should be secure & fully functional with Java.

That is what it is saying in Secunia. It only shows Java Update 19 in Program list!

U only have the one entry in Add/Remove as well?

Have U still got MSXML4 listed in Add/remove?

@Maurice Joyce

Hi Maurice

Sorry to jump in like this, but re. the above Java versions of which @soomro is referring, I may be able to offer an insight.

As an devotee of IE, I'm sure you're probably familiar with the other browsers, but may not be aware that Ff. has a Java console extension - and I believe this is what @soomro means.

It shows under patched and as a component for Ff. under secure browsing, but not in add/remove. It updates at the same time, and on the back of the main Java update.

For some strange reason the new update of Java console doesn't always overwrite/uninstall (like some other software we could name), but creates anew, leaving the old.

It was this that JJ23 was referring on the other similar Java thread.

@soomro

If the Java versions, to which you are referring, are indeed Java console (extn. for Ff.), I have copied and pasted a reply I have previously given on a similar thread:

"Re. Java console for Ff:- you only need the latest v.19 - the others can be uninstalled.

In Firefox; go to tools>add-ons>then extension icon>scroll to find each lower Java version>click to highlight>uninstall.

Do this for all old Java, except 6.0.19, then restart Ff."

I hope this helps.

TiMow

EDIT: Java quick starter 1.0 (on the same list) is something different and should be left.

Yes I still have that MSXML 4.0 SP2 parser. I think it might from my past troubleshooting where someone had posted that MSxml 4.0 was stable than 6.x as somehow evident to him in Secunia. I have 4.0 and 6.x showing in my patched list now so I guess the windows installation / upgrade I ran fixed that problem.

Also, I did uninstall Java 18 and 17 updates. I am surprised why Java and shockwave / flash don't uninstall the old updates since I have ran into trouble in PSI when I installed new flash and the old flash was still on the system.

OK - it looks like U are all fixed up now.

Not sure where U got that MSXML info from.

MSXML 6 & 4 run side by side. All support for MSXML 4 ceases on 13 April 2010.

If it is all now stable I would leave it for the time being - PSI will keep U updated on version 4.

If U are now a happy person could U please lock the thread. This will stop U & I from getting update emails. If U get other problems U can always open a new thread.
