Hello
I have this problem.
All of a sudden I see windows from internet explorer opened by itself.
These are all commercials.
I would like to stop this, but my virus scanners does not recognize this.
Any suggestions would be appriciated.

Hi pa4jj

As I don't use IE, my first thought to you, would be to use another browser (i.e. Firefox or Chrome), that seem to operate with better security settings.

But that's a bit negative, and it's all a case of personal choice, so as you've asked for help relating to IE, I will try to offer guidance, as to what may be required to sort this.

There are various settings you can adjust to effect what you view and don't view.
These can be found under the tools menu (top left toolbar one) on IE.

It's been a long time since I've actively used IE, so I cant remember the exact function of each, but it's worth looking at the following (under tools menu), and tweaking if required:

1) Pop-up Blocker -- turn on;
2) Smart screen filter -- turn on;
3) Internet options (at bottom of list) -- Security tab - should be set to about medium high (slider); Privacy tab - adjust slider as required (I would suggest minimum level of Medium)
4) Look under the other tabs of Internet options and adjust anything that you think may help your security.

Try this, to see if it makes any difference - if it doesn't, then post back here, as your problem may require further help.

TiMow

EDIT: All the above suggested settings, are what I have set on IE, and I never encountered this problem with these settings, when I did used to use IE.

Thanks you for you reply.
I am using Firefox I don't use MSIE.
But these MSIE windows keep coming on my desktop.
Those are not popup windows in MSIE itself. They are just MSIE webpages.

I have never come across something like this before - IE windows opening independently, outside of the browser. They do sound very much like Pop- ups, though.

As you say they are IE windows, I would still suggest that you open IE and check the settings I've outlined above.

Do these "commercials" bear any relationship to any of your current or recent browsing history on Ff., or are they just random? And what is the quantity and frequency of their appearance?

I would also consider checking your cookies in both Ff. and IE, to see if there is a relationship to any of the ads. and any of the cookies - remove any (or all) as you see fit.

One final point - there is a very good free program (I don't normally like to make recommendations, but....) - Spybot Search and Destroy, that you can find at the following link:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

If you don't have it, or know of it, you may want to consider downloading and running it, in case there is something more sinister at work here.

TiMow

EDIT: You could also try activating InPrivate Brosing and InPrivate Filtering, in IE (Tools), and Start Private Browsing in Ff. (also Tools), to see if this makes any difference.

@pa4jj ,

It could be that you have some very aggressive Adware/Malware that has infected your computer :((

You may find more help with your problem , however , by visiting a more specialised site such as "bleeping computer" :-

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

or "geeks to go" :-

http://www.geekstogo.com/

You do not mention your OS nor what security programmes you have used to check for infection .

Don't hesitate to post more details here first , before you look elsewhere , or if you need more information .

Hope this is helpful.

Anthony

It looks as if my 8th April post was deemed "unsatisfactory/unhelpful".

I did suggest that pa4jj should wait for an expert but I'm sorry I didn't explain myself properly. Apologies.

What I wanted to say was that I had exactly the same problem - every time I opened IE or Firefox, my screen was taken over by adverts. All were for respected products.

It turned out it was due to a security vulnerability in either IE or Firefox which had allowed trojans in.
There were 2 x Win32.TrojanDownloader.Agent) and one headed Extended Engine in C:\System Volume Information_restore.
All are TAI 10.

It think it was was something to do with Superiorads

With the help of experts on a site such as this, I was eventually able to remove it.
The names Trend Micro Hijack This and Combo Fix come to mind as software or sites to help removal.

Have Anthony or TiMow come across these or Superiorads before? Could pa4jj have the same problem?

Just remembered, as well as Superiorads, there was dcads.

I'm sure it was an advertising company based in Franch - Danube International?? - and the problem was quite common at that time.
Perhaps Trend Micro Hijack This and Combo Fix were connected with another problem but I'm very sure that superiorads and dcads were behind this problem.

But this is why I queried if having the insecure version of Firefox was a factor.

I have at last found my notes on the problem that I had. It sounds very much like this problem.
The notes are very technical so I've emailed Emil & Morten to see whether they think the notes can help.
Over to you guys!

Hello taffy ,

Prevention is better than cure , so the aim is not to get infected . The bad guys are not after you , but they will find you if you paint a target on your computer .

Your security is only as good as you and the "secure/safe browsing rules" and the "up to date" software you use - bad workman blames his tools and all that :) . Your browser may have a vulnerabiliy , but it is normally the way that you use/misuse it that is the problem , as with any software that you have/can not patch .

Nothing is 100% , so be sure to make at least one "back up" copy of all and everything on your computer tat you cannot possibly afford to lose - preferably keeping one copy away from/off your computer .

There are (literally) millions of variations/mutations of known malware doing the rounds and plenty of bad guys ready to use them ; you find out what you picked up and is giving you grief using experts on expert sites . They will frequently need to use Hijack This to diagnose the problem , particularly relating to browser related problems , but it really needs very experienced people to use it :-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HijackThis

ComboFix was designed to get rid of a few malware which were/are very hard to remove any other way .

Malware can shut down your existing securoty , prevent you downloading new security software , just hide itself and reappear when your back is turned or simply refuse to go :((

However much you may think you know , when you get infected get expert advice ; fiddling on your own can make things much more difficult for you and a disk reformat with consequent loss of data looms.:((

On that happy note I'll wish you a pleasant sunny Sunday .

Oh and in case pa4jj doesn't get back here , thanks for all your energy expended in helping.

Take care
Anthony

thank you for that, Anthony. I have Norton Internet Security and Ad-Aware Plus (paid version, v8.2.2). and I only visit safe sites.
So I use my PC sensibly although it seems that I 'tempted fate' by posting these few posts! I ran AAW+ overnight and it found a malware object - of the Trojan.Win32 type!
Still, it didn't get through.
But you're absolutely right - users such as myself tend to look at scan results as above and think "omg - where did that come from? What site did I visit that caused that?". Instead, we should accept that what happens, happens, and be glad our security caught the threats.

It will be interesting (at least for me) to see whether Emil/Morten feel the technical notes I sent them could help pa4jj.
Thanks again, Anthony
