secunia states powerstarter 6.x is end-of-life, and has no patches upgrades - can anyone suggest what to do? - should I uninstall or wait for cyberlink/secunia to offer a solution/update?

Hi,

End-Of-Life means there will be no further updates, ever. The vendor has either dropped the program, or simply issued newer versions, and stopped caring about this one. So waiting for a patch is probably not the right way to go.

Also, Secunia never offers updates, not even for programs that aren't EOL. At Secunia, we try to help users by providing links to the vendor's own patches, but we never issue our own.

Hope this helps.

I would like to know the answer for this as well. I started getting this message yesterday and never heard of the program but don't want to uninstall something my system needs.

Hi Ollielu

As Emil Petersen of Secunia said-the program as far as the vendor is concerned
is dead. No more updates, security or otherwise. If you wish to keep it you can
create a Ignore rule but you'll never be advised if a vulnerability arises-
risky at best.

Do you need this program? Only you can decide that. The PSI has
advised you as End of Life. Will it break your OS (Operating System) if
you uninstall? Highly unlikely. Here's a link to the vendor to help
you make a decision. http://www.cyberlink.com/prog/support/cs/product-f...

Hope this helps.

Regards, wr

If this offers a solution to your problem(s) please lock this thread
by choosing the ACCEPT option so you & I don't receive unnecessary
update emails.

EDIT: Added hyperlink above.

Hi

Yes when I meant an "answer" I did not expect an authoritative response from you, but rather what other users are doing when/if they receive this message. I realize you are just an intermediary in the process, and was not implying that you had some obligation to decide for me.

(Thanks anyway.)

@Ollielu

Me thinks you can't see the forest for the trees. I wasn't giving you
an 'answer' but was providing a link to the vendor so you could make
an intelligent decision as to your need for the program or not. I have no way of knowing what other people do when presented with this (these) decision(s).
To my knowledge Secunia doesn't keep track of the 'answers' people make-they merely point out vulnerabilities & some options that are available.

The only question you asked that I gave a direct 'answer' to was "but I don't want
to uninstall something my system needs". I said I didn't think your OS would suffer
from uninstalling the program-another reason for you to check the vendors link-
or the FAQ of your OS vendor.

Regards, wr

This programme is not vital - it comes with OEM versions of Windows from HP & others.

For what it is worth I dumped it within days of buying a new HP PC.

If that is what U want to do navigate to the file PSI is showing U - right click & delete.

I finally got round to creating an ignore rule because I use this program for playing discs and erasing/rewriting, and I don't have a similar program installed to take its place. Hope this helps, people...

I have the same problem - per my post a few days ago.

I bought an HP Presario laptop last November and cyberlink was part of the bundle. PC World - the retailer - told me that it is in the suite of software that I need to burn disks.

Maurice - when you removed the program, did you instal something else in its place to burn disks?

No - I use Windows Explorer - just drag & drop it to disk.

Removing the Powerstarter does not remove the ability to use HP either - it is a front end coordinator.

To me, total bloatware.

I have the same problem and what to use as a replacement. I would even pay for an update if I could figure out which of the many versions to pay for. I would even skip to more advanced and pricier version. My HP is only a few months old and already software is out of date. Any help or recommendations appreciated.

Donald - here's a recommendation for Nero 9 Lite (free):

As Anthony always points out: caveat emptor.
