I just now installed Secunia PSI for the first time, successfully scanned and got 6 threats, 1 of which is Cat. 5. But every time I click on a Solution for each threat I get the same message: "An error occurred while attempting to open the specified URL." When I click on the Forum icon it just says: "VIew Forum threads for..." (threat) and nothing else happens. The 6 threats are: Adobe Flash Player 10.x (twice); Adobe Reader 9.x; Apple QuickTime 7.x; Mozilla Firefox 3.0.x; and
Mozilla Firefox 3.5.x.

Hi bunnycares & welcome to the Forum

To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, use or switch to the ADVANCED interface, then :

1 Click on the + sign of the program to expand it.
2 Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file. You can then right click & choose delete. Reboot & rescan to make sure
that all remnants have been removed.

Hope this helps.

Regards, wr

Hi all

The steps below are to ensure connectivity to Secunias servers &
also to ensure the security settings of IE. IE may not be your default browser
but it's what Secunia uses to connect for updates, patches, etc. You
do not have to make IE your default browser-just make sure
the settings are exactly as listed.

It probably would also be wise to check that your firewall, popup blockers, etc.
aren't interfering.

This is from the PSI FAQ: # Open Internet Explorer.
# Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security tab.
# Select the Internet zone and click on the Custom Level button.
# In Security Settings, go to the Scripting>Active Scripting option.
# Make sure that Active Scripting is Enabled (rather than Disabled or Prompted).
# Press OK then Yes.
# Back in the Security tab, select the Trusted sites zone and click on the Sites button.
# Look at the bottom of this window, and uncheck the field labeled "Require Server Verification (https) for all site zones".
# Type in the following and press the Add button to add them to the Trusted Sites list:
http://*.secunia.com
https://*.secunia.com
# Press Close, then OK.

Hope this helps.

Regards, wr

I have the same problem which is persistent and new. I have tried de-installing and re-installing both Secunia and Mcafee Security Centre and have tried disabling my firewall temporarily. I have also applied all the fixes to IE security as advised above. URL addresses to the forum or solutions will not resolve or open, and I get the same message as the first poster.
I will continue to work away at what may be causing the problem but would appreciate any help along the way.
Best wishes
Ian

Hi,

Please try setting your preferred browser as the default, to ensure the PSI can access the proper browser when needed. This instruction should tell you how:

Hope this helps.

I reset them with no change.

Hi,

Could you temporarily try setting Firefox (Or any other browser you may have installed/prefer) as the default, and see if this changes anything?

Thanks Emil- downloaded Firefox and set as default browser and Secunia worked as expected.

This is very good news but I am now left with Firefox as the browser when I access forums through Secunia even when I have set Internet Explorer as the Default again. Strange? Is there a setting I can change in Secunia?

I have another Netbook with Windows 7 and Secunia works fine with Internet Explorer there.

Thanks for your help so far - I will continue to explore.
Best wishes Ian

Hi,

The PSI always runs the browser set as default for the "Administrator" user (which is the account the PSI should run as), so setting IE as the default for this user should allow you to use IE again.

hope this helps.

Sorry Emil - I set the browser default in windows 7 for IE to be default in the administrator account but Secunia still calls up firefox now.
Unless this is happening because IE is broken in some respect and it goes to firefox I dont know. Are there any other steps I should take.
Are there other users out there with this problem as above.
Best wishes Ian

Update.

Back to the original problem after de-installing Firefox

Every time I click on a Solution for any threat or for the forum I get the same message: "An error occurred while attempting to open the specified URL."

At a loss!
Best wishes Ian

Hi,

Please try following these directions: http://www.winxptutor.com/iedefault.htm
You will probably need to be logged in as the "Administrator" user when doing this. Please also try doing it with the user you normally run as.

Has this resolved the issue?
