Hello everybody,

We have the first Technology Preview (TP) of the new "Auto-Updates" feature ready for testing.

The concepts and ideas of this release are unprecedented by other tools and thus much conceptual work has been put into creating this TP.

The goal with this Auto-Update technology is to ensure that it works as seamless as possible. However, since we rely on other vendor's software when installing their security updates, there are certain things that are beyond our control.

This is where your help is of enormous value to us and all future Secunia PSI users. We would therefore like to invite you to download and install this TP and send us your feedback.

This is a test release and it comes without any kind of warranty for said reason, and you will experience that it is still a little rough around the edges, but this will be changed later based on your feedback. Currently, we are looking to hear feedback on how well updates are downloaded and installed for the programs, which you choose to subscribe to within the new "Auto-Updates" tab.

Furthermore, we are introducing a new concept called "zombie files", which basically refer to left-over files that an installer doesn't clean up after installing the latest update. One example could be Adobe Flash Player, where it is common to see old "zombie files" after performing an update. Usually, these files does not pose a real-life threat and they may be very difficult to remove for non-tech-savvy users. We will flag these as "Zombie files" and downgrade their threat rating accordingly.

Your can download the Technology Preview of the Secunia PSI with Auto Updates here:
http://secunia.com/PSISetupAUTP.exe

Getting Started:
The user interface is more or less unchanged from version 1.5, except for the fact that we have added the "Auto-Updates" tab in the top of the "Advanced Interface", right before "Insecure". After conducting the first scan a list of programs that are currently supported for "Auto-Updating" will be listed, in front of each item is a box, which you can "check mark" if you would like the Secunia PSI to automatically update the program, once it is detected as insecure.

Please note: During the TP, only English/International patches are supported.

Happy patching, we look forward to hear your comments and ideas. Please create new threads for all feedback, problems, and ideas that you have.

Best regards,

Jakob

Yes that is correct. Although we don't officially label it as a full "beta release" since this Technology Preview is focused on a single new feature in the PSI.

Hi Jakob. Please see http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/445...

(Do you want us to post such links here regarding the new TP or will you pick the new threads anyway?)

EDIT: Just seen that we have a new "PSI .0 TP" section, which answers my question.

Hello Jakob. I just installed this release and I'm very happy with the installation
process. It took only a few minutes and it worked OK. Excellent work.

This looks interesting, especially the zombies. Does this solve the problem I have been having for years, that PSI completely ignore the ignore rules? That causes it to identify not only your zombies, but also all archived older versions of INSTALLATION files. As new releases, upgrades, updates, and patches of programs often do not work, forcing me to reinstall the old versions, deleting the installation files is not an option.

The result is that whatever useful information PSI provides is buried under the false positives. These are time-consuming to identify as the location of what PSI has found is obscured by the screens of missing patches, and there is no way to mark them on screen as irrelevant.

This makes PSI a program I cannot recommend to anyone; if PSI doesn't work I certainly can't advise my clients to use CSI. As my emails to Secunia about this problem have been ignored, I have been ignoring Secunia.

However, if you have solved this ignore problem with your auto update feature, I would like to test it. Let me know

Hi jhp13syseng
Do you have some sort of special characters in the installation path of the programs that you cannot get the PSI to ignore? Please see this thread:
http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/439...
We are aware of this issue and looking at ways to fix it.
In cases with vulnerable programs detected on an external backup drive, it should work to create an Ignore Rule for the whole backup drive.

Except for weekends we usually reply to all emails with 24 hours. I cannot explain how we can have missed your emails, but if you write to support@secunia.com I will personally make sure to follow up. Alternatively you are of course welcome to create a new thread about your issue with the Ignore Rules. You can then get help from both other users and from Secunia Officials.

Hi Jakob. I can confirm that PSI Auto Update works fine! An hour ago Flash player was successfully updated to the last version. First I saw that it was scheduled for update, than waiting because it was in use and finally updated.
I guess that update was performed during restart of the pc. Good work!

First I should emphasise is I hadn't noticed the above, otherwise I wouldn't have run a test to see whether PSI would download and install the British English version of Open Office 3.2!

I run a security app which intercepts execs I haven't previously approved so I spotted that PSI had downloaded and wanted to install the US english version but decided I would let it go ahead. I intended to overwrite it with British English version later. I should add that I was also waiting for a British English version without JRE as that is already installed and up to date.

However, the installation failed and included an error message under update history but by the time I came to write this report, not only has the error message disappeared but also the Open Office entry under the Auto-Updates tab (not unreasonable) and the entry under Insecure Programs tab (not so good). Haven't done a rescan yet. There is no Open Office Entry under the Patched tab and a quick visual scan of the Open Office program folder suggests a large number of dll's *have* been updated despite the failure message so at the moment I'm assuming the install failure has left a partially upgraded Open Office behind!

Here is the relevant part of the PSI Sualog:

I have been using Secunia PSI for quite some time now and I find this TP a great addition to your program, I have installed this program on many computers and continue to advise others to do likewise. Keep up the great work, you are doing a great service to us all.

P.S [If this helps any] I am currently running Win7 Quad core AMD 810 processor 2.60Ghz 8 GB Ram 64bit.

After posting the original report I had to go away and do something else and had assumed that PSI was correctly reporting the install failure. The install must have been still running at that point and completed before I returned.

Hi,

The PSI will automatically install patches for any software you've check for auto-update. Since all the software on your system is apparently already up to date (which is good), enabling auto-update will only make it install patches in the future.

hope this helps.

Exactly. The whole idea with the auto-update tab is for you to to as little work as possible, all the while staying up to date.

hope this helps.

Note this refers to my posts re Open Office in this thread. Apologies for not starting a new thread as when I posted the first time I hadn't realised there was a separate 'PSI 2.0 TP' forum.

To get back to the British English version of Open Office 3.2 I had to first uninstall the US English version installed by PSI; I had tried installing over the US English version but the install wouldn't allow me to.

Having now installed the British English version and subsequently initiated a PSI rescan, OpenOffice.org 3.x has reappeared under the Auto-Updates tag and ticked (which I hastily deselected!). It correctly reports the version as 3.2.9498.500 and Up-to-date. The incorrect status message from the PSI auto-update under Update history has reappeared i.e. "16 June 2010 16:10:41 --> Failed to update OpenOffice.org 3.x from version 3.2.9476.500 to version 3.2.9498.500"

New, via Kim Kommando's world.

I'd transferred older files to "store for reference" in a new laptop, these mostly laid dormant two years with some current wierd effects. D/L'd PSI and after a bit started over with TP... first, this caught a batch of older files and some current; second, after some familiarization I was able to very quickly clear some 30 or so insecure items, and without incident. PSI reports 100%.

I would say that you have a winner and, with TP making it even easier, expect it will grow to be an important asset.

A great work.

Thank you.

I just downloaded v2 and the old versions of Adobe Flash Player were immediately labeled as zombie files (really cool feature). However, I noticed that that the system score was not adjusted accordingly upward. Any thought to fixing this? Also, any way for these zombie files to append appropriate hot links to either Secunia PSI forum entires or other sites that could provide guidance on unistalling these useless files?

Hi Guys and Gals, I downloaded the new program and found a few glitches that I haven't been able to work out as of yet and thought I would ask and see if there are any answers out there.
Problem>>> Adobe Flash layer 10X version10.0.45.2 (Active X)
I have run the download link provided several times and this program still shows up as a threat. I have uninstalled all older versions and uninstalled the 10X version at least 3 times and reinstalled it with the same results >>> potential threat!!!
What do I have to do to make this program safe??? I would get rid of it and not use it but it is needed to play the games provided on Facebook......
Anyone out there have any suggestions or instructions as to what I must do???
Thanks to all help, SBSATS

Hello Jakob.

I have installed PSI Auto-Update Technology Preview, but there are only 5 programs listed:

Adobe Air 2.x
Adobe Reader 9.x
Foxit Reader 3.x
Mozilla Firefox 3.6x
Sun Jave JRE 1.6.x/6.x

How do I add Macromedia Flash Player, which apparently updates hourly (exaggeration), but certainly far more often than other programs?
