Hi All;

Took a moment to scan the last few on R & C for June. Seems I've missed a bit. Mogs pee'ed in his chips (Is that American French fries or potato crisps, not sure how that works over there.) & Taffy's invented a new way to format text on the forum, the "u" switch. So if I understand how this works, "b" is for bold text, "i" is for italics text, and the new "u" is for unintelligent text? Taf, please let us know how this works out for you!

Sorry to be absent so much, have been busy on two fronts. Looking for work & fighting for unemployment insurance and of course the recurring daily routines. I miss being on the forum.

Should have time to catch up this weekend.

Hi Fred. The "u" is for underline, or it was. It doesn't work!

Great to hear from you - hoping all goes well on the job front.

EDIT: PS Fred - did you see that I've volunteered you to be our fashion expert. following a suggestion from donald111, to attract more ladies here? (Hi Donald.) Can you also do "beauty tips"? Mogs has graciously declined!

Quite a good day taffy.....missed a few large raindrops in this vicinity....passed by Christopher Wren's old house: ( without knowing exactly which one it was !); but there was a beautiful-looking pub in the village ! Caught a glimpse of the sea on the South coast; and saw a seventeenth century tea-house ! Um,um,er......did they have both India and China tea in those days.....when was the Boston Tea Party ? I hav'nt got stronger links with Brazil ?! I'll have to zip-a-long to Wikipedia !
There's the merest intimation in Fred's post that I don't use vinegar !!! It's not true Fred !!

The above post by wsj24rei is clearly a forum spammer.

Would someone else please give it a negative relevance score to minimise it.

Thanks

Hi Donald. Thank you for that.

It reminds me about the husband and wife shopping in Walmart just before the last USA match in the World Cup.

The man picks up a crate of Budweiser and sticks them into the trolley

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife

'They're on offer, only $10 for 24 cans'. he says .

'Put them back. We can't afford it.' says the wife and they carry on shopping...

A few aisles later the woman picks up a $20 jar of Olay face cream and sticks it into the trolley.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the man.

'It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful.' she says.

The man replies... 'So does 24 cans of Budweiser and it’s only half the price.'

Hi all;

Not job hunting Sunday or Monday. Holiday weekend over here. Tis the time American rebel upstarts celebrate our upstartiness. If you must know, I went to church Sunday morn, ate lunch, had a nap (of course) and mowed the yard. It never even occurred to me that I had forgotten to put my two cents worth in here. Didn't mean to be rude, but you know how the upstarts can be!

No fashion (or fascist) tips, but here's a joke.

A middle aged lady was disrobed in the bedroom, looking at herself in a full length mirror. Her husband came in and inquired as to what she was doing. The woman replied that she had been to see her doctor that morning. The man was confused, "That doesn't explain what your doing.", he said. Yet striking poses in the mirror, she explained, "He remarked that I had the body of a twenty year old." The old boy, trying to keep a straight face, blurted out, "What'd he have to say about your forty year old butt!?" She stopped, looked him in the eye, and replied, "The doctor never even mentioned your name!".

More to come, expect something in a couple of days. State is going to allow an appeal for my unemployment insurance. Will let you know.

Happy Independance Day holiday Fred....and God bless America too !!! What upstarts ?! Some of your stars could teach me English !! There's all kinds of rebels....and unhealthy causes....my favourite role model was'nt James Dean !!
One of our old kings ( German extract I think ) possibly killed himself trying to overcome a stammer....we've all got different standards and ideals....when outnumbered it's best not to talk much ?! My writing is'nt babyish nor precocious ?! I don't know where love has gone....my teacher used to do a lot more correction ?!!! I'm not "old school "?!

Evening donald !

If at first you don't succeed....try your hand at it again and again and again.
Faint heart never won fair lady....injustices are many.
There's all kinds of fast, pushy and flighty dames....even Brits with one "t"!!
If she ain't got the time to understand you...you could try adding or subtracting
a hint of mystery !!
A French accent ? Mmmmaybe not? Old spice? No...don't splash it all over..your own sincerity....maybe it will keep ?

That's a difficult one in some ways Anthony......on balance, moderation and the straightness of things tho'.....many more blessings than curses ? We hav'nt got to master the language of tact an diplomacy......we're a few light years ahead of needing the cavalry with 55 days to face in Peking ?! Evening donald!
Here's another little tip you may find useful as you wend your way thro' life......
It's likely you'll be a lot happier being yourself, than by generally trying to please a lot of the ladies or women. If she's got eyes for you.....she'll notice little things that the others can't, don't or won't. It maybe that you'll notice little things if she writes letters, and together you may work lots of things out. I may still have a few bad habits that someone is happy to overlook !!

Hello taffy.....so it's like you're hobbling along with a splint at the moment ?
One cylinder instead of the usual four ?
An apt description would'nt be nobbled ?
It's simply not cricket.....what's the name of the game....an umpire may be near the same tree every year ?!
Well, Fred didn't make it over the weekend...I hope he's having a bit of good luck...haps he just doesn't feel in the best of good humour....I don't mind if he feels able to unburden/share a few troubles....that's what friends are for.....line from a Dionne Warwick song.

Has anyone been watching the exciting World Cup? This year it has been quite a surprise on who has gone to the top and defeated one another. The final should be pretty exciting.

Hello.
taffy is much more knowledgeable than me, about football ! I can't think how I might have been of help to a published author ! I don't wish to seem overly sceptical or cynical but you possibly think I'm the naive one, if you think I'm gonna click on the link. In that way we may be more fortunate these days...we may be much too quick judging covers ? If you'd been on the forum about a year....it might have been a different story ?! Regards

taffy's having problems with his broadband donald....looks like it'll be sometime next week before we'll see much of him. No doubt he'll keep up to date with what's happening in the world of football, and you'll have a few things to discuss next week. All the best for now............

Hi All;

Noticed most everyone is now orangish yellow (amber, perhaps?). I'm depressed, left behind in your dust!

As to the World Cup, I haven't followed it. Soccer (or football) wasn't my sport. Americans were just starting to show interest in it when I was in high school. The physical fitness coach tried to teach it to us, in our gym class, but failed miserably. Several of the students in the class were varsity (American) football players and the rest of us played for fun. He kept screaming at us to use our feet, not our hands, but we were having too much fun playing it our way. Coach also said something about staying in position. How the heck are you supposed to tackle the guy with the ball if you can't chase him? Anyhoo, no one got a good grade that day. I think coach was a bit peeved at those of us that wouldn't listen to him. The next day we troublemakers ran laps for the forty minuets of the class.

@ Mogs, the middle "C" is exactly between "B" & "D".

A note on the job hunt: Two leads on a Counterman (excuse me, Counterperson) job. One is local (fifteen minute drive) for an electrical & plumbing supply. The other is on the opposite side of the lake from me (about an hours drive if traffic's heavy) for an electrical supply. I have experience in the electrical & plumbing trades, but it has been a long time.

Important tip for electricians: Don't work with the lights on!

Every plumber should know this: Poop flows down hill & payday is Friday.

Something else about the local building trades, at least it used to be so, that was the joke: If you owned a hammer, you were a carpenter. If, however, you owned a hammer & a pick up truck, you were a contractor (foreman). You would have to know how things were here then. No codes and everyone thought they were a structural/electrical/plumbing engineer.

Also, the State of Missouri is allowing me to appeal the denial of my unemployment insurance by my former employer. I have been busy preparing to trounce on their butts. The game is afoot now. I originally had no idea why they fired me. Because they had to give the State more info than they gave me, I have learned what is what. To be short, they fired me because I wouldn't let someone use a non-taxed account without a purchase order number (which was required by the owner of the account) and he got mad. State law mandates that the person (me), actually doing the selling, must collect sales tax unless the parts are for a special account (in this case a rural fire department). So they fired me for doing what I had a legal responsibility to do. Still, I need to have official documents (State statutes, etc.) to back up my case. Enough said (possibly too much).

Late now, physical labor tomorrow. If I could only teach my dogs to eat like goats, the cost of feed would be reduced dramatically and I wouldn't have to mow as often. August is coming soon, no rain and everything turns brown.

See ya;

Fred

Evening Fred.....good to see you making your presence felt again !

What you mean is; I can change a tap washer, and a bulb in the oven or on the ceiling....I could once have got a job as a kitchen technician ?!
It's important that a man find some balance 'tween intake and output....else the wrong creatures may benefit ?
I don't eat nor drink a great deal.....tho' I drive a lot....it's difficult fitting the exercise routine in......there may be a couple of fat rats round here....but all the cats live out of a tin?
Sounds like you might have made one or more enemies before the heave -ho Fred; or the customer's money in the short term forced a quick decision without heartfelt principles? Whatever, getting caught up in the resultant contention...if you did manage to find employment again quickly...could you leave the matter of insurance behind you ?
If they're all out at work in August?! If you can turn a hose on....create a few holes with a fork....Fred, you could be an international landscape gardener ?!!!!
Best wishes for now mate !

Yippee. The broadband phone line problem seems to have been fixed - just in time for Microsoft's many security updates tomorrow. My not having broadband has been a nightmare!

I'll now go and catch up on a week's emails. Millions of spam, no doubt - mainly viagra (up to 80% discount!), rolex watches and 'curvy russian beauties'! ;0)

I'm sure that when I used Outlook Express for my mail, I could enter filter words in both the sender and subject windows to block spam. I can't do that anymore - although I can categorise mail as spam, the senders simply change their email address. I even get spam allegedly from myself - my ISP have no ways of sorting that!

Finally, I'd better not mention the World Cup final!

Evening donald !
You've been with the forum just over a month....in that time you will have gained more experience of it, and how psi works. Some mistakes it's doubtful you will repeat ? Sometimes enthusiasm can make anyone a little bit hasty with their words.
The best advice that I can give, is : continue to read as much as is enough for you on the forum : make sure any reply to a thread/post is as relevant to the originator's topic as is possible; and also that threads/posts are in the correct section. Steer clear of "Vulnerabilities". If in any doubt, don't get embroiled in the topic at all.
Even so, we all make mistakes at sometime, but this thread is a fairly safe haven from snipers and what not ! Even my teachers used sometimes to throw missiles!
Maybe; think of it as being like Geneva in the classroom ?!!!

Sorry Mogs. I was only taught basic Welsh and that was over 50 years ago!
According to http://www.translation-guide.com/free_online_trans...
"You are being you take the Way Large I go he will be lasting write. we will be agreeing in Mrwsel tomorrow?!"

A new translator (Apertium: http://ilazki.thinkgeek.co.uk/~donnek/import_tex t_en.php) failed altogether!

Hi Fred. It's summer here too. 16 C and foggy! But we live on the Pennines at 1000 feet above sea-level so we do get some weird weather sometimes! We've had only one barbecue so far!

What I originally wrote was :-
You take the High Road and I'll continue writing...we'll both agree in Brussels tomorrow ?!
Then Google Translated to the above Welsh. If I Google it back again after having moved it to the forum; somehow it doesn't come out the same. A bit like a little lesson I learned in the army while trogging around Devil's Bog one night ( that being on Dartmoor !)....one behind the other....say about a hundred of us....the officer up front with the map and the torch! He gives a message to the one behind him which the man at the back has to get....all could speak English, but you can imagine....the message had completely altered by the time the last man got it !!! Who's in the dark ?!!!!!!!!!

@ mogs, I had the same experience with a young lady, years back. Except there were not a hundred translations of the same message, just the one. The conversation following went something like: "That's what you said!", "No, it wasn't!", "Yes, it was!", etc. You get the idea.

@ taff, if it were possible, I would send you some of my 'summer'. You can make a decent BBQ brisket in the oven/broiler, you know.

I wanted to pass this on. Some may find humor, some may not. The thread http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/475... made me remember this little tid bit.

I don't think MS Sysinternals has a version of this screensaver for anything past XP. It would be a shame if they don't make a new one. The original version was an .exe file you could set up in a booby trap fashion. If done correctly, you could redirect a friends computer to open the BSoD when they clicked on Word, for example. Much hilarity would ensue. Careful not to take it too far though. One old boy actually took his machine in for repair! http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb...

Hi Fred. Brisket - wonderful!! Some look down on brisket saying it's tough, cheap etc. But slowly cooked overnight - yummy!

I've just found a good quality local restaurant that serves it.

BSoD - that trick takes me back many years. A neighbour did it to me! But viruses in those days were not nasty vicious things like nowadays. A pain in the xxxx - yes - it sometimes took lots of time & effort to sort out but there was some humour.

Remember the one that made all the letters on your screen drop to the bottom of the screen?

Fred mentioning screensavers reminds me: does anyone remember the screensaver that showed a castaway on a small island. Everytime help appeared e.g. a yacht, something funny happened and he wasn't rescued.

The programming was very good - the date/time on your PC dictated the 'seasonal changes' to the island's appearance.

I've just found it:

http://web.onetel.net.uk/~gnudawn/johnny/

(Caveat emptor!)

Must try it!

EDIT: Can't!! the link there doesn't work. Will have to look again when I've a moment.

Taffy ,

"Screensavers" are just one of the tricks the bad guys use to get you ; even legit ss's have been known to carry infection past the A/V system .

So as much as Caveat emptor , it's "mind the doors!!" and that's no Jim Morrison ;)

This site is what you may be looking for ; the actual website passes green on my site advisor , but I have not checked any downloads available !!

Be sure to take extra , extra care .

I've just been duly impressed by Mogs & Anthony conversing in Welsh in "Off Topic".

It reminded me of the old hill-farmer who lived in a remote part of Wales - no electricity/gas/running water.

He had to go into hospital for an operation. As soon as he arrived at the hospital, he was given a good bath - for obvious reasons!

As he left the bathroom, he said to the nurse:

"Well, I'm glad that's over. I've been dreading that operation for years."

EDIT: PS Thanks Anthony - I'll stay well clear of those screensavers. Good point of Mogs - do you want also to post your advice in Off-Topic?

Something for the weekend:

An Englishman, a Scotsman, a Frenchman and a Welshman were travelling in an aircraft that suddenly went out of control and was certain to crash.
To their dismay, they discovered that there were only three parachutes in the plane.

The Scot argued that he ought to have one, since he was a very important banker whose death would result in the collapse of the world's stockmarkets.
The Welshman handed him the first parachute and the Scot jumped out.

Next, the Frenchman argued that he should be given a parachute. He was an important executive of the French Football Association, and the future of French professional football rested on his special enquiry. He put the straps over his shoulders and he jumped out after the Scot.

The Welshman now turned to the Englishman and handed him a parachute. 'Here you are' he said cheerfully.

'But what about you?' gasped the Englishman, amazed at this unflinching heroism.

'Oh, I'll be all right' said the Welshman. The French guy took my haversack'.

Sorry! No offence is meant against these wonderful nations - feel free to substitute other countries if you wish - as I did! ;0)

Hello taffy ,

My reply was directly to you in the thread where you raised the subject . It is not something that is advice to/for everybody ; I have already expressed my views on that subject several times .

I have nothing against any thread , even if this is still an "old farts" hang out - no better or worse for it .

Your other "teccie" thread for "newbies" to seek seek "basic teccie" help , to my mind only , is not what you promised ; it has no theme(s) , too many disjointed postings without qualification , no guide for a newbie to locate a topic and ask/pose questions and (like I have previously mentioned/suggested) no moderator . To my mind it needs a big rethink . That's just my (unasked for:(() opinion without malice or otherwise .

Just an example : Registry cleaners and their use ; there is pretty much a 50:50 divide on recommending them and this subject is raised all over the net/web . For a newbie there is danger in giving unqualified "questionably independent**" advice without support/back up .

[**as in , no commercial interest/bias ]

Those who are "pro" are "usually" those who have never had a problem and a "back up" gives them confidence ; those who are "anti" have "usually" had/seen the chaos and damage an "unsupervised" software tool can create , back up or no back up .

I learned my (limited) way round the Registry with my hand held and using training wheels ; now I know (some of) the dangers and what I can and can't , need and don't need to do . It may not be overly difficult if you can follow good instructions precisely and to the letter ; but I would be loathe to think I could/know enough to show a newbie around the bowels of M$/Windoze . As a result , I would never recommend a "Registry cleaner" (however good/proven it may be) without first giving them all the references for them to read up on the subject ; and even then they would probably be too teccie for many/most average users to understand . Bored begets carelessness ; this is an interesting ?! website :-

http://www.theeldergeek.com/registry_edits.htm

This is where you go using the link in the first red box :-

http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_xp_registry.ht...

On a "need to know" and an "If it ain't broke don't fix it" basis you can relax until your computer starts running in treacle , then get a real "technically" qualified friend to show you how to sort the mess .

So to answer your question : No !! No offence :))

Take care
Anthony

As usual, Anthony, you talk a lot of sense!

I understand why you won't post your screen-saver thoughts in Off-Topic - I just thought that a "Red Alert" there about the dangers of screen savers would be useful.

Regarding Registry cleaners, I have Lavasoft Registry Tuner. But I was recently recommended - here - to try Uniblue so I bought that, too. Both appear to find issues that the other didn't but that also happens with AV software, of course. So I'm delighted. It's cost me but I feel my PC runs faster.
(EDIT: It works for me but . . . . Caveat Emptor!)

Regarding "Off-Topic", my initial idea was that so much good advice appears in other threads but can be missed. I thought it would be useful to members such as me to have them repeated in one spot.

Which is why I eventually posted "Off - Topic". My intro says
"The aim of this thread is simple: here you can post hints and tips that have helped you or that you have posted in specific threads elsewhere in this forum. That way, many more will benefit too. Or you can post general queries".

I have no control over what is posted there - which is why I can neither promise nor deliver anything.

I'm sure that the Secunia Support team will take into account how the thread is evolving and how it can be improved. Perhaps they will then introduce a monthly sticky and take control of it. At that stage I will be pleased to have been a catalyst!

I really appreciate your comments, Anthony. Many thanks.

If you ever met me , you would change your opening sentence in a trice !!

As to the following , that is exactly the problem , you need to take charge ; how you go about that is up to you , I may be wrong , but I doubt Secunia have the time or direct interest to get involved .

Part of the problem is there are a lot of posts but very few posters and the "strike rate" of viewer to post is one of the lowest of all the threads . Too much info in a jumble makes it difficult to navigate and no target .

As for "Reg cleaners" , I hear what you say but from my experience they are only there to make money . Without criticising the products you mention , I got a free/promo copy of an expensive pro-version of their cleaner off a certain company; the detail and care with which they diagnose and tell you their suggested repair method is staggering - even so , many repairs are orange warning and a lot redlined - a very technical "hands on" set up ; in my opinion , no comparison whatsoever with the supposed "market leaders" , defo not for newbies .

Catch you later :))

I suppose recent/breaking news is a bit of a jumble...more often than not, the off topic posts are security related and the thread is evolving as those who use it learn. Strike/hit relativity hasn't been a priority....the monthly figures were the justification for continuing it. It's a fairly safe haven that perhaps new users will be made more aware of in the future ?
Surely anybody who can use a computer can make up their own mind...reputable sites/reputable products, and no holy cows nor wars (?!)....and Secunia already monitors ?

I just wonder how many of the messes made by registry scanners were
on already "black boxes" ? None ? They were all squeeky clean before ?
Like almost anything else they've moved on ?

Hi All;

First, I must say that I do not mean to offend or upset anyone. I (try, at least) to respect everyones opinion, unless they are forcing it on someone (or me!). Please take what is said here as 'friendly concern'.

My post about the BSoD screen saver was meant as an amusement (funny to me, anyhow). One would hope that downloads from a MS site would be safe. However, I'm afraid it has cause something unamusing, but possibly necessary, to be aired in public.

The "Off Topic" thread is currently used for nothing, in my opinion. It needs a moderator and a new course. Taffy would do fine as moderator. Super duper tech skills wouldn't be required. The only qualifications, I can think of, are an ongoing (read: daily) commitment and the ability to guide a conversation back to point (when necessary).

The thread would, of necessity, need to be 'sticky' for newbies to find it. The structure of this forum currently does not allow topics inside a thread, so my idea would be, not to have a new "Off Topic" every month but a new thread when a different topic is brought up (hold on) and a big bright button at the top "Show other topics" that would list links to other topics. It would be the moderators responsibility to add/change the topic header and close topics to start a new thread. The moderator would use the "Accept" button to choose a response that wraps up the whole point of the thread, if one exists, or simply lock the thread. It would be nice, if possible, to have more than one topic active at a time, with the limit of say three, so as not to stress the moderator or take up too much of the forum. No 'points' should be given.

A+ to Taffy for effort to provide a much needed service. I also believe the 'first timer' (not seeking specific help) needs a place to alight and become acquainted with this forum. I just do not believe a thread with random (and to me meaningless) posts is that service. If anything, it will confuse and dismay newbies if they try to follow it.

A+ to Mogs also, for being a good solider and putting forth great effort.

The discussion of registry cleaners (or other potentially dangerous utilities) would be a good new beginning for "Off Topic", if a conversation was started, not a monologue. Also, the moderator would be responsible for interjecting a word of caution regarding such things. I have opinions for and against. For, if the user is knowledgeable or at least trainable. Against, if beyond ones understanding and abilities. That is what 'paid' service techs are for.

As to this thread, I would hope it to be around longer, R&C's a nice place to goof off. I am afraid the lack of 'new' posters is because of one or two reasons. 1) New people think it to be a private conversation. 2) No interest. I am at a loss as to making this more open and inviting and if one's not interested, I understand. Possibly we are the only goof offs.

As to Anthony's talking a lot of sense...well he does talk a lot sometimes (just kidding). Seriously, he brings up valid points, and I for one, appreciate the input. The main point, I think, is the view to post ratio. I have quit looking at "Off Topic" as there is nothing for me there.

Sincerely;

Fred

p.s. Just read Mogs post above. I have no problem with "Off Topic" as it is now. If just one person gains knowledge from that thread it is good. I simply believe a dialog or multi-log would help many more. Recent/breaking news has other outlets.

Well, I'm a lot happier than I was this time last night.....I've got my "rough"(!) cutting edge, rocket-like Dev back !!!
Never mind all the critique....take part; get involved; and contribute....there's much more knowledgeable people than me on this forum with no hints, tips, experiences to share without grudging.....to help shape what you'd like to see on the Off Topic " ?
Most of the other threads are " reactionary"....prompted by random/chance/hopeful and often helpless enquiry. Warnings, pitfalls you may have seen, conflicts you've managed to avoid....most are one post wonders, because they're not encouraged, bitten, or put off. Minimum effort/ disclosure for maximum help ?
I'd like to see the Secunia forum as much less vulnerable to the " Bullshits" of the Internet !!

Hi mogs;

Glad to hear Dev Channel is working for you again!

As to "Off Topic", I realize we have two different views.

My take is that if responses can not be reactionary based, in your ideal situation, at the least they should be relationally based. There would be dialog where information could be exchanged that is (I hate to use it) relevant to both or all parties involved. A monologue only serves one purpose, in this case, to allow the speaker to speak.

Merely to copy & paste articles is simply not relevant to me. If I want to know about a type of program, I already know how Google Search works. If directing people to information is what's important, perhaps a lecture of the proper use of the available search engines would be of service?

To conclude, you and I are having dialog about the concerns we both have regarding "Off Topic". If however, instead of answering your post I talked of the weather or some other unrelated matter, we are not dialogging. Little useful (or entertaining) martial would be exchanged. You would not have a response from me, just a post with no relevant info.

Anyhow, enough of that. Talk it out amongst yourselves or rant & rave as you will. I've stepped on enough toes for one topic. Please don't drag me back to this, as I don't wish to be disagreeable.

Fred

p.s. If the constant posting of copied material can at least slow down. I am willing to have a 'discussion' on "Off Topic" if you'd care to suggest one.

All points taken and understood Fred....as indeed it was so at the outset. If it has become more "monologious" ( have I invented a new word?!)....it is because some were resentful of the threads creation and grudging of giving support perhaps; more concerned with sniping at it than creating peaceful dialogue !!
In your absence you may have missed my having made it quite clear some weeks ago; that the postings to the thread were articles etc., taken from my browsings, thought likely to be of interest. There's nothing stopping anybody from opening up a dialogue within the thread about any product/article; includind something of interest themselves, etcetera.
I think it's true to say, that most items I've posted about have had a security orientation...of more or less relevance to some than others.
It strikes me that a major flaw in this forum is still the willingness to negate the positivity in some whilst at the same time allowing the creation of irrelevant threads.....we must be entertaining to the Bullshits and the malicious !!! So easily we seem to be " spiritually divided"; and as a consequence ineffectual in zapping crap instantaneously ! The Secunia forum perhaps should be the benchmark ?

all this is food for thought. I would add though that Post/View ratio is the wrong way to judge any thread.

For example:

PSI Auto-Update Technology Preview 30 posts / 5099 views

Windows Firewall: 32 posts / 443 views

and, if these fact are correct:

Acrobat Reader / Acrobat Multiple Vulnerabilities 10 posts / 13,777 views!

In my humble opinion, the low ratios do not mean that the threads concerned are irrevant/uninportant etc. Far from it.

Between them, Relax & Chat and Off-Topic have had over 1300 views in just over a fortnight. Mogs' excellent "breaking news/latest news" aren't really intended to result in a post - it's simply to keep members up to date.

Having said that, both he & I recognise that the threads should continue to evolve and improve. To help us achieve that we need members' input so thank you all for that. More input from more members please!

Suggestions have been made to Secunia so . . . watch this space!

Copy posted in Off-Topic.

My referral to " Bullshit" was a reference to a recent user's name.....one used to denegrate Secunia. Taffy's reference to "food for thought" was in regard to the matters being " discussed". I can't find any more choice in words, other than to "say"; I think you're monkeying around with words Fred.I'd much prefer that our correspondence/postings, improved in their quality.

@taf, as said on the 'where the hecked my mail go' thread, all is well now. Kind of disconcerting, I don't care that much for e-mail anyhow. Pain in my butt having to search through threads manually to see if there's a reply. Fortunately I was only working one.

@mogs, glad to see you're back on the horse. Keep riding the thing, we appreciate your mastery of sardonic wordplay. To make another smile while pointing out hard things is an art.

Yeah mogs on using a printed road map. Was watching a newscast here last winter season in the 'colonies' &
the main story was about drivers using the nav aids &
winding up lost or stuck in some barren out-of-the-way
place.

The solution given by most highway personnel? Buy &
study a road atlas before starting a road trip using the
sat-nav system. Go figure.

Taffy-had thoughts of adding that 'motto' to my sig
line but figured it would only serve the purpose of
getting unneeded negative replies/votes so leaving
it out - at least for now.

Hello and humble greetings to the Great Silver One ; if I may venture , I too like your quote . if someone votes -ve so what ; it's their loss not your's so , " if they can't take a joke , */΅€% 'em !! " as Bette Mi(d)dler** so wisely put it .

I also like that quote in a signature from a member who's not been around for a while - something like " if it ain't broke , tweak it some more " ;)))

Did you know taffy dreams of being a hacker so he can fix his own vote total ??

Maybe you could look in here as @avenjabbar1 seems more lost than I - hard as that may be to believe :-

Hi all;

Not to worry mogs, we've not left you. I just didn't want to be first. Had my mouth open so much lately my tongue got sunburned!

I understand that provocative signature lines and sundri comments do have a negative effect on the 'score'.

Electronic navigation vs paper maps... The trend in auto repair parts is moving to electronic catalogs. In the 15+ years behind the counter, there have been computers that mimic the paper catalogs (most of the time they were even correct!), they made 'point of sale' easier because the price was calculated for you and inventory adjusted when a sale was made. Also, special order parts could be ordered directly from the warehouse computer, saving a phone call and a warehouser ordering the part wrong.

When they started to do away with paper catalogs I had no place to make notes, put sticky tabs or correct numbering errors. Also, the catalog rack in most parts stores was quite large compared to a 15" computer monitor (especially the flat ones), how do they expect me to hide from customers?!

Anyhoo, hope everyones day is/was going well. I'm off to job hunt, again.

good morning (here - 07.35)!

But my Secunia score is safe - with my spectacular computing skills, I am to hacking what Ghengis Khan was to longevity.

I too have decided to change my signature. Here's my new motto:

Taffy ,

A "Members' Lounge" and what that implies requires all the same administration and control that you don't/can't have due to the format of the the Forum .

You run your own thread , either keep it in the present format or encourage a monthly topic or subject . A thread is non-navigable apart from scrolling and therefore becomes random and the problems and chaos that that causes is (to me) blindingly obvoius in your "other" thread .

Changing the name does do anything other than in that choice of words imply everything that a/this "thread" isn't .

Gotta go , busy , busy !! ( hah , you'd believe owt :))

Morning all ! In late last night....out again a little later on...hoping the M6 isn't a squeeze ! Glad to see my plea didn't "fall on deaf ears". This time on here oft brightens my day !
Where there's a will..... a Members Lounge/Chat Room would be the thing....not for scrolling thro' the Times....instantaneous lines without coffee ! We know the technology exists....it just requires Secunia to link it ? taffy....start a thread with a petition ? If they can read they can vote ?
Gotta get another hour's kip in.....may see you later !! Have a good day .

Within the "confines " of Secunia;
Inside the humourous/banterous...sometimes rediculous....Relax and Chat thread.
No need for code/ overmuch crypticism on this road;
If only one person reads it; I'm not at all sad !!!!

Hi Anthony.

There are loads of on-going issues and developments. They need to be highlighted, mainly for the less-technically able members (such as me!). But both Mogs & I agree that the Off-Topic thread can be difficult to 'navigate', as there are so many items there.

But that's no reason to stop posting them, in our view.

We have been working hard to find ways to make things easier for members and viewers. We have taken on board ideas posted here (within the 'limitations' ***)and there will be big changes at the start of August to Off-Topic.

Lots of people view "Relax & Chat" - changes will be made to this thread, too, at the start of August - but I'd like to see more people posting here. Which is why I wondered if a name change would help.

*** You are right to point out the limitations - as this is a thread, not a Secunia sticky. But I don't see that as a barrier.

I realise that other forums have a "Members lounge" - usually run & administered by that forum. Personally, I see no need for a formal administrator etc etc for "Relax" - this is not that kind of forum.

I personally doubt if the less-technical (such as me!) would be 'confused' by the name "Members Lounge. But unless there is lots of support for that change, I'll put that on ice for a month and see what people think then, when they've seen the new thread.

Secunia have been great; they appear to be relaxed about these monthly threads and content to let members decide.

So - apologies for such a long post, and thank you Anthony, Mogs & others for your most helpful comments.

A nice place for turtles?

Pedlars of songs with a fast or slow sexy voice
may oft sound as tho' they've some thing to teach.
Often, they've been very quick going into production with more than one hand.
Some can or cannot dance.
"The secret" is to get paid for endless repeats ?

It may sound romantic?
It may help to keep fit?
If it gets to No.1 it may quickly be overtaken ?
The womb may already be on it's way out ?!

It doesn't always sound like a coach-load in harmony ?
I didn't always listen to the maths nor music master ?!
If words were like sand...is it a foreign beach ?
Was it where Homer first landed ?!

Dear mogs, of which Homer do you refer?

Homer #1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer

Homer #2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer_Simpson

Both have words that are remarkable and timeless. However, most of what Homer #1 said was Greek to me!!

Fred

p.s. Occasionally I entertain myself too much, perhaps?

Many thanks for your kind wishes . A single thumb transported me from a jaundiced yellow category 3 , moderately critical being to a zestful orange category 4 , highly critical one !! A small step from Secunia and an even smaller one from me :))

I shall of course be dedicating my new found notoriety and time to wine , women and song - so no change there :))

Taffy , HM says that as a commoner , you should keep your head down - unless you want to carry it under your arm , poor beknighted soul !!

Y'all tek cayer .

Anthony

PS ; if Mogs has been to the Pool then he may be late beck , still looking for his wheels , most likely :o))

PPS: some software called "gesundheit" works well on sneezes .

Does HM still do telegrams taffy ?
I'm sure one probably keeps in touch with those more often abroad....and before reaching 100 !
Fred....the Homer that I read, had, I hope, been "seamlessly" translated into English. Discretion in any language is sometimes very wise. Telemachus may have learned to understand Odysseus...is/was politics ever anything other than......
good housekeeping ?
His namesake may have been more crosses for senate ?
It's a small nation this...still riven by contention: but at long last, we've got what I've advocated for years....a big coalition !
I'm not extremely witty taffy...but I liked Harold Wilson ?!
Ban all street protestations....they are an abuse of freedom !!! Anyrate it's good manners....more oft forgotten, senile and spoiled, rather than needful of teacher re-training ?! Forbearance ?! The other side of the coin is wilting ?!
