Since I have a rather limited memory (512 MiB) in my Win XPSP3 system, I tried to reduce the amount of boot activity by using WinPatrol's "Delayed Start" facility to postpone it by 2 min so that other activities (principally Avira AntiVir 10) could complete its work. This failed utterly! PSI (psi.exe) evidently started when ordered, but failed saying something about the executable not being named psi.exe. Have I blundered into an impossible dream? Evidently there is some difference between starting PSI manually and starting it at boot; maybe the caller? Any advice would be very welcome!

@mogs,

Thanks for your reply. I apparently did not make my needs and situation clear; they have nothing to do with my IE settings which are those mentrioned in your first link. Let me explain more clearly:

As I boot my WinXP3 SP3 system in the morning, several processes start more-or-less at random. Among the "early starters", one usually finds Avira AntiVir 10, WinPatrol 18.1.2010.0, and PSI 1.5.0.2. All of these scan the system at startup in one way or another; it is even possible to generate conflicts among them! At long intervals (totally unpredictable, I believe), what amounts to a race condition between AV10 and other processes can occur; this is broken by a timeout set in the AV10 driver avgntflt.sys (not accessible to the user). A series of such events makes the system extremely unresponsive. Note that AV10 and WP cannot be delayed; both are part of the security system being established at boot. I simply wished to defer the start of PSI by a couple of minutes, but it resists this by refusing to run correctly when WinPatrol starts it with the same path used in the start menu link. There seems to be no list of options available so that one can tailor a command line so that PSI can be started from a script at a desired time in the same was that it normally starts from boot.

An at least partial solution (how good I won't know for awhile, perhaps a month or more!) is this: CCleaner also was started at boot, scans the system, and participates in the same race: this I could easily delay using WP capabilities. And in addition, I instructed the AV10 Guard process to ignore PSI if it encounters it. Stay tuned!!

Thanks very much for the reply/explanation pudelein.

I think if it were me tho': and as you have already got your set-up to 100%: I'd have been inclined to have chosen the manual option for psi....possibly once a week; rather than introduce another prog into the race/conflicts. I'm certainly not the most techie of persons, and yet somehow have managed to keep my pc running in comparitive harmony without too many problems...particularly as far as security is concerned. With your set-up, skills/abilities....I will still be interested in hearing how your finer tuning proceeds.
It may be worth posting your successes etc., in the "Off topic: general tech talk July" thread....as it may well be of interest to others as well. Regards
