Secunia PSI says that there is a vulnerability with Excel 2002 on my computer. For a solution it sends me to Microsoft's update. Microsoft update states that there are no updates for Excel 2002 available. Help

Hi, and welcome to Secunia.

Perhaps you have some old files tucked away that the scan has spotted. But before we ask you to tell us which files have been 'highlighted', can you tell us which version of Secunia you are using. This will be shown on the bottom-right of the main screens.

I (and many others here) have Secunia PSI v1.9.0.0 which has an Auto-update facility. See below*** for how to install it.

Also, it will help when you reply to tell us what PC/operating system etc you have, as I have done in my signature.

Do get back - someone here will help you!

*** Go to the PSI 2.0 TP forum (on the left) where you will find this thread:

SI Auto-Update Technology Preview (TP) .

There you will find you can download the Technology Preview of the Secunia PSI with Auto Updates here:

PS Here is how you can tell us what file(s) Secunia has picked up as vulnerable:

1 Go to the main Secunia PSI window & click on ‘Advanced’ if it’s underlined in blue. (Don't be put off by the name "Advanced"! It's easy to follow/use.)

2 Click on “+” to highlight & expand it.

3 Click on “Technical Details” (in Toolbox”)

4 This will give you the installation path of the vulnerable file. If you copy & paste it in your next reply here, we’ll be able to help.

Hoping this helps.

Hi,

Microsoft updates are usually a special case, as with this one. Frequently updates are timed to installed after a system reboot or similar, meaning that even when Microsoft Update show all updates installed, you're still a reboot short of actually finishing the installation.

Therefore it is highly recommended to reboot and rescan after installing any patches for Microsoft products.

hope this helps.

I am using PSI v 1.9.0.2.

This is the result it gives me: Technical details about this installation of Microsoft Excel 2002, you can use this information to determine why the Secunia PSI detected the program and the security state of it.

Version Detected:
10.0.6856.0

Installation Path:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\EXCEL.EXE

I am using Windows XP SP3.

Microsoft does not seem to have any updates for it. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place? I have rebooted so that is not the issue.

Thanks for your help.

Barry

Hi,

The latest secure version requires you to have version 10.0.6860 of EXCEL.EXE, as indicated by our rules and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978471.

You need to have this patch installed: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa...
which is Office XP SP3. If this is installed, you should be able to see the update on Microsoft update. If this is the problem, I will make the nessesity of installing this before checking MS update more clear in our update help text.

hope this helps.

I ended up uninstalling Office XP 2002, then re installing it with original CD. Then I went to Microsoft updates and installed SP3. Then I installed all of the other updates. Finally I ran PSI 2.0 and I achieved score of 100%. Problem solved. Thanks for your ideas and help.
