Secunia is telling me that Microsoft Access 2003 and Microsoft Outlook 2003 are a Category 4 security threat. I have tried to download the Microsoft updates but have not been able to do so.

What next?

THanks

Hi,

Microsoft updates are usually a special case, as with this one. Frequently updates are timed to installed after a system reboot or similar, meaning that even when Microsoft Update show all updates installed, you're still a reboot short of actually finishing the installation.

Therefore it is highly recommended to reboot and rescan when experiencing any sort of problems with Microsoft patches.

hope this helps.

Hi amarylis;

Are these programs in the "Insecure" or "Patched" tab?

If in the "Patched" tab, the category 4 security threat is what they would be if not already patched. If you'd look at the "Patched" programs list, the right hand column "Patched Threat", hover over the [?] to see the explanation.

If in the "Insecure" tab, we need to know the 'file path' and 'version number' for each program.

If you need help doing that, please ask.

Regards;

Fred

Hi amarylis;

Glad to help.

Emil and yourself determined that a reboot & rescan was not the fix needed (remember that trick, it solves a lot of problems).

Are you using OSI (the online scan) or PSI (with the icon in the system tray)? If OSI, please consider downloading PSI, it will be a great help. If PSI is being used then continue.

You do not mention which tab the problem is in. If in the "Patched" tab, please see the explanation I give in the above post. If in the "Insecure" tab, let's start with this.

=======
If not already, please run PSI in Advanced Mode.

To do this click on the PSI icon, in the system tray, to open the interface. In the top right corner, is "SIMPLE" blue in color and "ADVANCED" black? If not, click on "ADVANCED".

Click on the "Insecure" tab, Click on the [+] to the left of the program in question.

In the "Toolbox" click on the "Technical details" icon. Listed under "Version Detected:" it shows the old version PSI is reporting. The "Installation Path" is where PSI is finding the old stuff.

To go there, click on the "Open Folder" icon. This will open the folder where the old file(s) is(are).
=======

You should now be able to report the 'file path' and 'version number' for each program.

Hi amarylis;

Thanks, the information provided will help me (or possibly someone else) figure this out.

Not sure of your time (no location in your profile). If you're on the left side of the pond, I'll be back in an hour or so and we can continue. If on the other side of the pond (Atlantic) it may be late for you.

Hi amarylis, I'm back;

It seems you have older versions of these programs.

In the "Control Panel", click on "Security Center", is "Automatic Updates" set to "Automatic", "Download...", "Notify..." or "Turn off..."? You would 'normally' want "Automatic" so as not to have the bother of manually doing updates.

Also, while in the "Security Center", on the left, under "Resources", click on "Check for the latest updates...". This will open "Microsoft Updates". After it loads, click on the "Custom" button. After that loads, on the left do you see updates available for "Office"?

Good Morning amarylis;

Odd that updates are set to automatic and you have rebooted & rescanned with the Office stuff not being updated. I have a different type of Office 2003 (not as many programs) but mine show the current version numbers.

Try using Microsoft Update* in the "Custom" mode to see if Office** updates are available. If so, let MS Update download & install them. You will most likely be prompted to restart your computer, if yes, do so. You'll need to repeat this process to see if more Office updates are available. If they are, repeat until fully updated and no Office updates are available. Also download & install any other updates showing. Report the results of a fresh PSI scan.

* Make sure it says "Microsoft Update" and not "Windows Update". If necessary, allow the download of "Microsoft Update".

** If no Office updates are available (after clicking the "Custom" button), click on "Restore hidden updates" to see if any updates exist for your Office programs. If they do, restore them.

I have appointments Thursday but will check in with you in the afternoon. Can't promise when, sorry.

Hi,

Just to make sure, did you reboot and rescan after applying the 23 updates? Windows updates don't "kick in" before the system has been rebooted.

Hi,

Please confirm that http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ show no updates for any office products, even after first rebooting.

If this is the case, I need the version of the files MSACCESS.EXE (which should be 11.0.8321.0).

Please ensure you have Office service pack 3 installed: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa...

If not, please install it, reboot and check Microsoft update again.

Sorry to jump in when there are already experts giving advice but may I add another point, please?

A few months ago, I had to replace my desktop hard drive and reinstall all the "off the shelf" software.

There were a lot more than 23 Microsoft updates! And I got in a bit of a mess with the updates appearing not to work.

It was either Emil or Morten (perhaps in another thread) who fixed my problem by explaining that updating so many in one go doesn't always work - that you sometimes have to install one update and reboot before a later one can also be installed.

So I kept going back to the MS Update Centre installing updates until it finally told me I had all the updates I needed.

Maybe this is what you need to do, amarylis?

My control panel update info is telling me that I have updates for Microsoft word 2003 installed, but PSI is saying that I need updates.

Would there be any point to uninstalling and reinstalling my Word 2003 ?

I believe I may have found the problem. Do you have Office SP3 installed?
If not, please fetch it from here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa... , install the patch, reboot, and check MS update again. If this fixes your isuse, I'll make sure the need to manually install this service pack before the patches is clearly indicated by our update advice.

hope this helps.

Last edited on 15th Jul, 2010 12:19 Hi,

If you're unable to successfully install the updates, I'm afraid there is little I can do for you. The PSI does depend on a working setup of Microsoft/Windows update. We aren't directly (or indirectly) involved in the creation of these patches, or the maintenace of the Microsoft Operating system.

I suggest you direct your question to Microsoft Support, where they will hopefully be able to help you determine what's causing the failture.

Once you're able to install the patches again, you're more than welcome to return here for help getting to 100% patched status.

Best of luck.

By chance I fixed a PC the other day with a similar problem. It was fixed by the following actions.

1. Download and SAVE Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 to Desktop from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa...

You may wish to wait for Emil to respond on the importance of his link here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa...

I am not sure the link is correct but worth waiting for clarification from Emil to save U more hassle.

2.Press CTRL+ALT+DEL(Delete) and END TASK of all programmes running under the APPLICATION heading.

3. Shut down any anti viral programmes running & the firewall via the Sys Tray.

4. Launch the downloaded file from desktop & install.

5. Reboot

6. Check your anti viral & firewall are active.

7. Run a manual Microsoft update & install any remnants.

8. Run a full PSI scan.

I don't think that was the correct link, actually. It seems to be for Excel 2002, while the user in this case is using 2003.

It would be a good idea to try this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa... instead

OK - no problem. Click the link I gave U on the post above.

A box will appear asking U to RUN or SAVE.

Click SAVE.

Another box will appear with boxes filled in with this

Office2003SP3-KB923618-FullFile-ENU

Look in the LEFT pane of the box U can see and scroll until U can see DESKTOP.

Click DESKTOP(near the top). Now press SAVE & the download will start.

It will put an icon on your desktop for U to use later.

Hi amarylis;

Looks like you found some help!

Skimmed new part of thread, short on time.

@Emil & Maurice, thanks. I also had problems installing updates of Office 2003 when mother board failed and MS forced install from scratch because CPU changed. Don't know if same prob but had to do incremental updates, not every thing would go at once.

Also had a prob with a .cab file, I don't believe amarylis has same but just to mention it. Taken from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875556 "Note: The file name is frequently, but not limited to, SKUxxx.cab, where xxx corresponds to the second, third, and fourth numbers of the Product Code." This file went missing but was fresh install from CD of factory install software.

Will check back when available.

Hi amarylis;

After proofreading this post, I would like to apologize, in advance, for its length. Please, do not be overwhelmed by the information. Take one step at a time, ask if you have questions.

You have received some expert advice, but I have experienced this problem, as I have already stated above. MS meant for the updates to be done as they came out, not in a lump. I need to know where your versions are at.

Near the top of this thread you reported the version numbers of the Office programs that PSI detected. Here is a list taken from the MS Support page for Office 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821549 showing where your programs were at. They were all previous to Service Pack 3.

Access:
Release = 11.0.5614.0
SP1 = 11.0.6355.0
SP2 = 11.0.7969.0
Intalled* = 11.0.8172.0
SP3 = 11.0.8173.0

Publisher:
Release = 11.0.5525.0
SP1 = 11.0.6255.0
SP2 = 11.0.7969.0
Installed* = 11.0.8166.0

* (Installed versions reported by amarylis on 14th Jul, 2010 20:50)

If these version numbers have not changed please review my instructions on 15th Jul, 2010 00:59. It is good to have fully updated SP 2 before continuing. Also please read the following paragraph. If the version numbers have changed, see ** below.

On 15th Jul, 2010 08:16 you said that you didn't see the "Custom" button. Please be certain to use "Microsoft Update" and not "Windows Update" as it doesn't show updates for Office. The "Custom" button is in the middle of the opening window of "Microsoft Update", directly below the "Express" button. It shows a more complete list of MS program updates than when using the "Express" button, which only shows "High Priority" updates. Also do not forget to check the "Restore hidden updates" in the left hand column after clicking the "Custom" button.

** Here is the list of version numbers installed by SP3 (re. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=923618 )

Excel.exe 11.0.8169.0
Winword.exe 11.0.8169.0
Outlook.exe 11.0.8169.0
Powerpnt.exe 11.0.8169.0
Mso.dll 11.0.8172.0
Mspub.exe 11.0.8166.0
Msaccess.exe 11.0.8166.0
Infopath.exe 11.0.8165.0
Frontpg.exe 11.0.8164.0

Are your version numbers at or higher than these? If so, SP3 has been installed.

Please,as I asked earlier in this post, let me know where your version numbers are at now. I will be available to help some on Friday and all day Saturday. I am determined to help you.

Don't give up! Remember, it's only a stupid box, you're in charge of it!

NOTE: If downloading SP3, it takes awhile. Yes, please use Maurice's suggestion of saving to the desktop.

Fred

p.s. Thanks to all for helping!

Hi Fred--I really appreciate your helpfulness and persistence. What I decided to do was to uninstall Word because I hardly ever use it. I may reinstall eventually, and will print out all this great advice and keep it. We can use Wordpad for letters.

At the moment, the only insecure program that I have is Microsoft Core Services. I went to the Update in the Control Panel, and there wern't any available. I don't know what this is, or if I need it.

One other question: why do I keep getting "New Secunia downloads are available " on the bottom of the screen constantly?

Thanks again. This is a great forum.

Hi,

Switching to the Simple interface does not resolve any problems. The simple interface does not show updates that (like this one) can require a substantial amount of work, but only and exclusively those that are "Easy to patch". This is a service to help users who aren't tech-savvy stay up to date, though the best security is afforded by using the Advanced interface, and putting extra effort into patching. I'm sorry the link posted earlier was the wrong one - Have you tried the second link I pasted?

Thanks Emil. I don't know if you read the post, but I decided to uninstall Word as I hardly ever use it.

Can you tell me why I keep getting a balloon saying New Secunia download is available? Every day. There can't be that many downloads!

Thanks again.

To repeat what Emil said, switching to the Simple interface does not resolve any problems. The insecurities will still exist, even if you do not 'see' them.

Word is a 'paid' for program, and while MS may not continue to support Word 2003 much longer, be certain that you have your product key along with the Office disk to have the availability to reinstall Word if the need arises. Otherwise you will be required to purchase Office 2010.

Version 1.5.0.2 is the current version, you possibly have an earlier one. If you click on the balloon (not the X in the balloon) it should take care of updating. If not you can download the 1.5.0.2 version here: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

You can download the Technology Preview of the Secunia PSI with Auto Updates here: http://secunia.com/PSISetupAUTP.exe This link was taken from http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/444... which is a good place to read about the new PSI

I regret that we were unable to resolve all issues. If you ever need help again, please ask.

Hi Fred--thanks for all your very gracious help. I am pretty happy with where things stand, and it's really nice to know that I can get help here. It's not too common these days.
