The last version I had ran fine and was v1.5.0 but after I installed v1.5.0.2 when I try to launch the software it tries to start with a pop up window but then closes down after a few seconds. IT puts an icon in the lower right but when you try to hover over it goes away as well.

Need some thoughts, have tried reinstalling IE 8. Have also removed and reinstalled Secunia PSI a few times and same result.

Running XP SP 3
IE 8

Thanks,
Derek

U said in your opening statement that U had been using version 1.5.0.0. Your joining date is today.

Have U used PSI before? I ask because PSI may not be set up correctly.

I am having the exact same problem. I updated from v1.5.0.1 to v1.5.0.2 yesterday. I’ve been a regular user of Secunia PSI for a long time (years?). I tried uninstalling Secunia PSI and re-installing it, but problem persists.

I am also on Windows XP, SP3, IE8

I have used Secunia PSI in the past many versions in fact 1.5.0.0 was working fine. I just never registered online to create an account. Glad someone else is having same issue.

Worth another try to uninstall before looking elsewhere.

Right click on START>select EXPLORE then navigate to C:\program files\secunia

Once U open the folder there is an uninstaller - click that>uninstall>reboot & then reinstall version 1.9.0.2 from the link I gave earlier.

U may also wish to check the FAQ which may give U more clues.

I am having the same problem as well. I also never registered, but I have been using the software for about a year now with no issues at all. No it won't work after I upgraded. I am running XP SP3 if that helps.

Interesting how this appears for 3 people using XP SP3.

I have just tested PSI using my "tester" PC which is also XP SP3 with IE8.

It is running correctly. The sequence of events for my test was:

1. Uninstall PSI as described in my previous post.
2. Installed version 1.5.0.2 from the Secunia website.
3. Auto scan worked OK.
4. Upgraded version 1.5.0.2 to version 1.9.0.2 from the link I have already given.
5. Again the install & auto scan ran perfectly.
6. In both cases the icon could be seen & used from the Taskbar (Systray).

To me, that means it is not necessarily XP related nor does there appear to be a corrupt download.

Have U all checked your PC date & time? PSI will not work if this is incorrect.

If U have all used PSI before it should not be a Firewall problem but worth checking.

Have U checked the FAQ? Can U connect using this link?

Derek,
Very interesting. The update from 1.5.0.1 to 1.5.0.2 was a bug FIX. In your case something different!

To save U and I getting more update emails I suggest U lock (Accept) this thread.

If the other 2 who tagged on need more help they can easily create their own thread.

Pleased U have got it working again. Perhaps when version 2 is released U will have more luck with the upgrade.

I don't think it is just three users. Probably more like me who did not say anything until I read the thread.

The behavior is exactly as described in the first post: tries for 2 or 3 seconds to run, then closes. Icon in Sys tray disappears when I attempt to hover over it.

I will try the suggested uninstall (used Control Panel uninstall first time) and re-install suggested version and will report back.

I have been using the software forever and it has been excellent to date. I love it.

Tom Baley

P.S. Running fully up to date XP Pro, 2 GB, 40 GB free disk, HP laptop, 2.0 GHz.

I would kind of like to leave the thread open to see how many more come forward as there is obviously a bug in the v.15.0.2 and v1.9.0.2 versions. And for now the issue is resolved with going back to an older version but that is not saying going forward it is resolved.

Hi

We would like a log file from the users with this issue.

1) Close the PSI by right-clicking the PSI tray icon and selecting Exit.
2) Press start, the run run, and enter "cmd"
3) In the command line window that appears, enter "cd "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI""
(It is important that you surround the path with quotes it the command will fail.
(note that on 64bit systems the path would most likely be: C:\Program Files (x86)\Secunia\PSI)
4) Enter psi.exe --verbose --debug secunia.txt
5) The PSI will now run in debug mode.

There will now be a file called secunia.txt in the folder C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI. Please email us this file, and we can examine the problem further.

I am fairly certain but just want to be clear but you want this log exercise done after installing the v.1.5.0.2 right since I have gone back to v1.5.0.1?

It is likely that Morten Hansen has gone for the weekend ; so if you can suffer the problem until Monday , you will have a "fresh" start then .

I'm having exactly the same problem: previous version ran fine, 1.5.0.2 starts and immediately disappears. Windows XP SP3; uninstalled, rebooted, downloaded and installed clean copy - same behavior. I'll try the debug mode suggestion.

Incidentally, 1.5.0.2 is running fine on my Windows 7 x64 machine.

@Dave D and @rswear ,

Secunia usually say not to post your logs here (in public) as they are likely to contain confidential/private data . The brevity of the two logs posted probably precludes that .

The email address is support@secunia.com marked for the attention of Morten Hansen (in this case) in the "subject" .

Like I said above , they'll be back tomorrow morning CET .

Take care
Anthony

I have the same problem. XP Home SP3, both 1.5.0.2 and 1.9.0.2. Start program with shortcut or from command prompt. Get a blank window for 2 seconds and then task terminates. My log file is cut off exactly where the examples above cut off. This occurs when I'm logged in as myself administrative user.

Interesting experiment. When I run the psi.exe program from a command prompt running as user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM, it runs OK, program connects, presents window, scan completes, report, everything. When I run again as administrative user, task terminates after 2 seconds as above. Are there permissions problem with my admin login regarding source of this problem?

Hope this is useful to support to determine solution of this problem.

THank you.

I heard about this from Security Now, Steve Gibson & Leo LaPorte.

Some additional information about my installation:

I did not have a prior version installed before I installed 1.5/9.0.2.
I am running Microsoft Security Essentials and no other protective software.

I made a procmon log. It appears to be doing QueryDirectory on C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\My\CTLs (success) and then Thread Exits all threads then Process Exits.

Thank you.

Hi,

For those experiencing this problem, it might work to downgrade to 1.5.0.1, which you can (temporarily) download here:
ftp://ftp.secunia.com/PSISetup1501.exe

Our current investigation seems to indicate that this problem occurs only with version 1.5.0.2 on Windows XP SP3. Is anyone on another OS having this problem?

re:your request for problem confirmation--I was using older versions and the upgrade to 1.5.0.2 (and the attempt with 1.9.0.2) acted just as others stated: a screen pop and disappearance with the taskbar icon vanishing upon mouseover. An additional odd point: when I tried to return to 1.5.0.0, the program would run and scan, but could find no references to compare to, i.e. it found no patches or needed patches, it would not register when last scan had taken place.

tpigaga

as an afterthought-- just reinstalled 1.5.0.1 with your link from this thread and all is well again. PSI performs and scan results are appropriate for this machine.

No, I'm not here to throw salt on this and I don't need help. The link for the .1 version in this thread worked just fine. Thanks for that.

If it's worth anything to the developer I have two systems and PSI (v1.5.0.2) worked on one but not the other. Both have XP SP3 and IE8 although a difference is that one is a P4 (PSI works on this one) and the other is a AMD AthlonX2 (PSI doesn't work).

If you would like any more info I'll be happy to help.

Hello.
The Secunia officials will be in , in the morning. If they do pick up on your post, I'm sure they'd like to know how....in which way psi is not working: won't it install ? It installs but won't connect (?), so on and so forth.
I know you say you don't need any help.....but in case you havn't read thro' them, here's a link to the FAQ's which might be worth checking thro':-http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal... Regards,

Last edited on 10th Aug, 2010 10:31 Hi,

We could need some further help in debugging this problem. If anybody who experienced this issue still has access to a system where it can be reproduced, we would highly appriciate it if you could send us the log from your Event Viewer around the time of a PSI crash.

Ideally, you close most other running processes, start Event Viewer, run the PSI up until the problems occur, and send us this log maybe a minutte or so before and after the PSI runs (and subsequently crashes). If you want to help us, please send your log to support@secunia.com

When doing so, please include your operating system, service pack level, processor architecture (32 or 64 bit), PSI Version and versions of Internet explorer.

For more information and usage instructions relating to Event Viewer, please see http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/w...

Thanks in advance.

As a footnote to our request for event viewer logs, it would help if you include in your emails your Operating System, Service pack level, patch level, language version, list of installed software and their versions, etc. In short, anything that might be relevant.

thanks in advance.

Add my wife's XP SP3 machine to the list.

Sony Vaio VGN-FS690
Windows XP SP3 fully patched
Avira AV software

I have had PSI on that box for years, literally, and all was OK until this update (1.5.0.2). I've uninstalled, rebooted, cleared cache, rebooted, reinstalled and all no joy. Downloaded with IE8 & Firefox 3.6.8 same results.

The install appears to work fine, then after I click run now the PSI interface box appears, but is empty. Then less than a second later it disappears but the tray icon remains. Until you hover the cursor over it, then it disappears too.

Something is broken kiddies! Please fix.

Mark

Child's play Doc , heal thyself (or rather she who must be obeyed) and go back to version 1.5.0.1

Here is the link from further up the thread , in case you missed it :-

ftp://ftp.secunia.com/PSISetup1501.exe

Let us know if that helps . Perhaps you can send Secunia an event log and details , as requested , before you reinstall the PSI for your better half .

Take care

I have PSI 1.5.0.2 running on my XP Home SP3 system for quite some time now. There have been no problems whatsoever with removing insecure programs, updating system scores, etc. No crashes ever..

I do have a copy of the original file stored on my computer and will forward that file to you if you need it for comparison.

I am sorry so many have had problems with this program as it is a valuable tool in maintaining an old OS like this one, but also for any other OS out there. Information found here is often in real-time and relevant to current security issues.

I have been tearing my hair out the last 2 days trying to get v1.5.0.2 to work. I even uninstalled and installed v1.9.0.2, and that didn't work either. Thanks to the Forum, I uninstalled and reinstalled v1.5.0.1, and everything is back to normal!!!!

Is it possible some of the problems here may be due to Adobe Flash being installed re 1.5.02? I just would like to point out any installation or re-installation should be done without Flash installed before upgrading from v. 1.05.1 to v. 1.05.2.

Just a thought. I say this because it is a known issue if Secunia is not turned off (i.e., forced to close or exit) Flash cannot be uninstalled completely before upgrading to the newest version of Secunia, or in other cases, simply upgrading Flash itself.

I think this is how upgrade errors occur?

Secunia runs just fine without Flash anyway. Just does not look as pretty.

Just be aware if you want flash content and you only run Internet Explorer as your internet browser, removing Flash from Secunia will also affect IE. No flash content will be viewable in IE until Flash is installed.

Hello Joe ,

The inherent problem of Flash updating is the ActiveX .ocx file in the Macromed folder being locked up by programmes such as the PSI not being exited at the time of update ; there are other programmes which do this and also need exiting .

I don't know if Secunia have looked at your suggestion , but is more likely to give display problems to the pretty bits of the PSI UI rather than the "won't load/run for more than a second or two" problem for some (a few) people - all using XP - going from 1.5.0.1 to 1.5.0.2 and which is recovered when going back to 1.5.0.1.

I hope Secunia will add your idea to their "things to look at" in what is a most frustrating "bug". They'll be back Monday CET .

Glad you were "happy" enough to close your thread ; start another if you need other input .

Take care

Anthony

Just installed on wife's PC for the first time -- after having run it on 4 of my own systems flawlessly for a month or two. Having this problem on her system. ALL are XP SP3!

Do you still want logs from the app and event logs as well? Anything else?

Thanks,

A while ago, Sandboxie would not run and displayed an error message immediately after a MS Critical Update (Kernel vulnerabilty) and the developer there had to write an update to work with the new MS update. Some of his clients were going so far as to uninstall this critical update so they could run this program as it was, before the update and fix was written.

I would never recommend this course of action there, or here.

It is possible the XP systems affected all share a common program recently updated, and is causing a conflict with successful running of the gui. It is the gui affected, since the window opens and closes in two seconds or less. This program is not a common one, as more systems would be affected by this error, and would be much simpler to diagnose and repair. What needs to be ascertained is whether the main processes of PSI is terminated, and what is causing the crash, or whether PSI is still running in the background.

I just sent my debug output to the indicated email address.

I'm trying to think of anything else notable on this laptop. It had had several bits of malware. We worked with Security Cadets to remove those. We are currently running McAfee SecurityCenter as well as Spybot Search & Destroy. I recently used Secunia PSI to identify and update versions of software which were known to have vulnerabilities.

That's all I've got ... for now.
Thanks,

Small update - having looked at my event viewer logs from trying to launch 1.5.0.2 and noticing errors with extracting a microsoft root certificate file, I used windows update to manually apply Update for Root Certificates [May 2010] (KB931125) then tried reinstalling 1.5.0.2.

Still doesn't work - but now get a DEP warning, an application error listed in Event Viewer, a much more extensive Secunia Log, and windows debug output to send in to support.

Turning off DEP for PSI and it shows the behaviour originally described but with no application error noted on Event Log. The Secunia log is very truncated. Wierd.

Will forward the logs to support.

I noticed this thread http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/517... with the chap commenting how his XP box (presumably SP3?) wouldn't run 1.5.0.2 unless he upgraded his office installation from 2003 to 2007? I've got office 2003 installed and I wonder if it's a common factor?

Re joe schmoe 22nd Aug, 2010 22:08 et seq. -

I hope this will be relevant, think it is. My PSI runs OK now in XP Pro SP3 fully patched. It might be Microsoft Office - - maybe, or maybe not. I have the v1.5.0.2 running fine in my XP Pro SP3 x86 box, and my Office 2003 Pro is installed but not runnable and not updated since late last Fall (see **below for too-lengthy explanation of why not, if interested).

Patched XP & IE last week (Patch Tuesday), also have been running Secunia PSI for about a year with hardly any problems, except PSI used to give a false ID on Windows 2000. That was several months ago, and I reported it, and it eventually ceased to report W 2000, so I expect that Secunia patched PSI appropriately (thank you).

I wish I knew, when did my PSI go up to 1.5.0.2? Maybe, the 1.5.0.2 update arrived and installed autonomously while Adobe was out of the way, last week. A day or two after patching Windows, I uninstalled vulnerable Flash for two or three days using Adobe's Flash Uninstaller, and later Adobe Reader using Windows A/RP, then installed the new Adobe patched versions of Flash and reinstalled Reader 9.3.3 and patched/updated it to v9.3.4. It was likely on the first or second reboot after patching Adobe Reader to v9.3.4 that PSI showed an anomalous behavior, but it did not refuse to run altogether. PSI opened, asserted that it would run a first scan, and claimed that its Last Scan was on some date in calendar year 1969! Then, it failed to run that scan automatically. Etc.

Major aspects of this issue are described in my recent thread in Programs forum, "Windows 2000 Server (not Terminal Services) - - False ID by PSI" (locked), and that discussion will be continuing in PSI Forum.

Maurice Joyce (may his tribe increase) suggested that my issue might be related to this one.

One thing I just noticed - PSI v1.5.0.2 is greeting me as "<unregistered user>" and that surprises me. Guess I will have to re-register for its pleasure. (Commentable?)

Would it be useful to this discussion, if I were to try running the v1.9.0.2 update? Is that a beta, and why is it not offered via the PSI Update command?

**[because after the last wipe-and-reload in October 2008, the IT shop reloaded me with its handy-dandy copy of Office 2003 Pro, and then Office Genuine Advantage detected it as illegitimate and disabled it, some months later. When I can find my Office CD and license key (misplaced in recent move), I will update it and maybe use it - using Open Office 3.2 instead for now.]

I'm a long time user of your product.
I run XP SP3, Office 2003, use Mozilla and try to keep everything up to date as advised by Secunia scans.
I don't know what version of Secunia I have as I can no longer run it. I am not a PC expert, I did once get a message saying I can only run this as administrator (I was at the time logged in with administrator rights).

Simple question, any idea when this will be fixed? I am using the web based scanner to get advice at present, but have to remember to do it, not as good

@bendibuk ,

If you navigate to your C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI folder you should see a PSI.exe file , if you mouse over it it will indicate the version .

In the same folder is an Uninstall.exe file ; you can use this to uninstall your currently installed version .

If you were running version 1.5.0.2 or 1.9.0.2 and maybe have the XP SP3 bug , try loading the older 1.5.0.1 version ; here is the link posted earlier , in case you missed it :-

ftp://ftp.secunia.com/PSISetup1501.exe

Let us know how you go .

@bendibuk ,

Secunia does not update anything unless you ask it to so do . So there will be no silent download or sneaky update of your version - you have the control .

There is an "auto-update" facility in the Test version TP 1.9.0.2. ; but it will only updates those programmes you confirm in the "auto-update" tab and the PSI is not included .

When will this bug be fixed ??

Who knows ; 1.5.0.2. was technically a language update so going back to 1.5.0.1 does not lose you anything unless it has a new language you need and 1.9.0.2. is just testing the update facility and has other (annoying/confusing) display bugs .

I guess patience is a virtue in this situation .

Hope that is clear enough .

The change log for 1.5.0.2 indicates that it is more than just a language update:

Version 1.5.0.2 (28th May 2010)[+]
This is primarily a service release, which is a recommended update for all existing Secunia PSI users. Existing Secunia PSI users will also be notified about this release through the Secunia PSI.

Certificate signing now uses timestamping
The Secunia PSI is now available in Arabic
Various minor bug fixes

The change log for 1.5.0.1 indicates that it was just a language update.

In any case, it seems reasonable to me to expect that Secunia would advise us all about their progress or plans to address the problem with 1.5.0.2.

Hello @jpohedra ,

You are quite correct , my apologies for confusing information concerning the 1.5.0.1 and 1.5.0.2 changelogs .

Thank you for pointing this up ; notwithstanding , if version 1.5.0.2 will not work on an XP SP3 system and if going back to 1.5.0.1 resolves the bug , then little is lost (if anything) other than wasted (precious) time .

We know Secunia are working to try and fix the bug - hence this and related threads ; we know they are testing the next version - I am using the test version ; the fix and the release will happen when it happens - if you need more info then email Secunia direct at support@secunia.com

Like I said patience is a virtue .

Take care

Pleased to hear Secunia accept it is a fault and are working on a fix. After reading some of this thread I thought maybe they still needed convincing there was an issue with XP users only they could resolve.

In response to an earlier reply yes I understand that Secunia will only update if I ask it to - already getting the messages saying there is a new version, which I am ignoring.

So how do I know when I should not ignore the 'new version' message?

Hello @bendibuk ,

I think that Secunia have accepted this situation since their first response to the thread over a month ago .

The "bug" has the temp.fix/workaround of reloading version 1.5.0.1.

AFAIK : It only seems to affect posters who are using the XP SP3 OS . Exactly how many people are affected is unknown ; the posters here are in the majority from the USA . My XP SP3 happily runs all available versions of the PSI - lucky me :))

Secunia are investigating the problem ; whether they can/will fix it before the new release of version 2 will depend on their resources , bearing in mind that the PSI is an offshoot of their commercial product CSI and is offered free for individual use .

Users of 1.5.0.1 will equally have to bear the "update" bug for now . Annoying but not fatal .

If , as is likely , the next release is version 2 , then (by past history) you should get an Email advising an update and it's release should feature here in the Forum .

Whether this bug will be cured in version 2 will only be apparent at that time . I imagine everyone concerned hopes that will be the case .

I am sure someone from Secunia will comment as and when they have something concrete to add .

Take care

Anthony

When i tried to run 1.5.02, i got this same error. PSI crashed/exited and the tray icon wasn't cleared until mouseover.

What i can't see previously reported in this thread, but which might come handy to know, is that i also got the following entry in the system event log, each time i tried start psi:

Source: DCOM
EventID: 10005
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service MDM with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{0C0A3666-30C9-11D0-8F20-00805F2CD064}

DCOM was running ok, MDM was set to manual start, but it made no difference to start, restart, stop, or in any other way alter state of this service. Psi crashed no matter what. I returned to psi 1.5.01 and now all is ok with that version.

If it matters; my computer is XP-32bit, fully updated, intel c2d e6850.

Hi Emil ,

I recently - the 13th July 2010 - reinstalled my OEM version of XP and ran all the M$ updates which were critical and then most of the options .

Prior to this I probably/most likely did have KB931125 installed as that would have been/was my usual practice ; however at the moment it is still offered as an option from M$updates - with (Aout 2010) as a notation - not installed .

EDIT : I probably have not (re)installed it as with the OEM reinstall I also changed from IE7 to IE8 .

I also have KB's 982670 , 982671 and 909520 on option - not installed .

KB940157 and Windows Live Essentials are also options - not installed.

Hi,

@Anthony

Re checking for KB issues and updates possibly causing problems for some XP SP3 users not being able to run v. 1.5.0.2 on upgrade, there are some tools provided by MS for XP possibly not being used or addressed.

Run chkdsk in the Run box (Start/All Programs/Run) using "chkdsk C: /f/v" without quotes or "chkdsk C: /f/v/r", again, without quotes. The first option will do a check of files on the hard disk, but will do a light check only. The second option will do a thorough check of the hard drive and will take some time to complete. This is useful for those whom have not used checkdisk in some time or perhaps never.

Running this program is recommended particularly after error messages are encountered in programs that have run successfully for some time after install.

To check the findings of checkdisk, go to Start/Control Panel/Performance and Maintenance (if in Category View) or Administrative Tools (if in Classic View). In Category View, and also in Classic, click Administrative Tools. In both, click Event Viewer. Highlight Applications. Look for Winlogon under source, and highlight this entry with event 1001. Right-click your highlight and choose Properties to view the results of checkdisk. It is here the results of a chkdsk scan is posted, and will avoid confusion about whether any repairs were made. Checkdisk does not really display results when the program completes or when the computer is restarted after running chkdsk. It is here your findings can be found.

Another option less frequently used is system file checker, or sfc for short. Sfc will check for Windows Protected files to ensure these files are intact and in their original configuration. Changes in these files sometimes happen without notice and/or through normal use, or less frequently, file corruption.

You will need your original system install disk to run this program. Be prepared to insert your cd install disk when asked to do so.

To avoid a problem with sfc reading the install disc on demand, use the cd/dvd drive used to install windows.

To run this program, go to Start/Run, type in "sfc /scannow" without quotes. Like chkdsk C: /f/v/r, this will take some time to run. If you would rather run sfc at next system boot one time only, type in "sfc /runonce", again without quotes.

Would be interesting to see if this advice helps some users run v. 1.5.0.2 after running these two programs or not.

I did have a problem yesterday with a manual scan of my system using PSI v. 1.5.0.2. It would abort the scan at the last step "Matching data with Secunia File Signature Engine", and not complete. This behavior was completely unexpected, since this program has worked fine since install.

Program runs fine now after running these two programs.

Hello Joe schmoe ,

Thank you for your input re "chkdsk" - a very useful script .

In fact , I don't have any problems running any version of the PSI - including 2.0 Beta ; Emil was probably following a lead or trying to eliminate possible causes of the "XP SP3 bug" which is why i gave him as much detail as possible in my last post .

@smrphdude's post says that the bug is very much still alive and well :(((

Take care

Anthony

Hi,

Everybody experiencing this bug, I suggest you try installing the Secunia PSI 2.0 Beta, which can be had here: http://secunia.com/PSI2SetupBeta.exe
The following guide does not apply unless you are running the PSI 2.0 beta.

If the Secunia PSI still does not run after simply installing the beta, try closing it down and following this procedure.

First, open the "cmd" program. You can do this by typing "cmd" in either the "run" box (Found under Start in XP), or directly in the search field (under start in Vista and Win7).

Then, type "cd "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI"", preserving the quotes around the path. From here, you can run the PSI with different options. Before doing this, and before attempting to try another option, it is very important to close every running instance of the PSI, by right-clicking the tray icon and selecting Quit.

Try running the PSI with this command: "psi.exe --dep-allow-atl-emu --verbose --debug secunia.txt".

If the above option did not help your PSI installation to run correctly, please close down any running instances of the PSI, and repeat the run with this command:
"psi.exe --no-force-dep --verbose --debug secunia.txt".

If running with either of these options does not correct the problem, please email the "secunia.txt" file, which was created in "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI", to support@secunia.com. Do NOT post any information from the log here, as the information contained within is specific to you.

If either of these options makes your PSI run successfully, terminate the PSI and repeat the command that worked, this time adding the "-S" flag, and not adding the "--verbose" or "--debug" flags. Running with "-S" saves your options for future use. An example of a full command, which also saves the setting, is "psi.exe --no-force-dep -S", which will store the "--no-force-dep" option for the future.

If you save a setting, and wish to return to default settings, run the PSI with this command: "psi.exe -Z", which will remove all PSI settings stored in the registry.

hope this helps.

Downloaded the linked beta.

When i run this:
D:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI>psi.exe --dep-allow-atl-emu --verbose --debug secun
ia.txt
Everything works ok, no problems found.

I then tried removing "--dep-allow-atl-emu" and the program crash. The log shows this:

[09/02 11:29:02.653] Secunia PSI starting
[09/02 11:29:02.653] Windows Workstation version: 5.1.2600, Service Pack: 3.0. SetProcessDEPPolicy returned 0x00000000
[09/02 11:29:02.653] WOW64 : 0

That's the whole log.
It seems the "--dep-allow-atl-emu" is the only thing that can make the program work.

@ E.Peterson

Thanks very much, both options allow v2.beta to run on my XP SP3 box if used via the CMD window. Is there any preference as to which setting I should use when both work?

However using the -S flag as described does not seem to save the setting because the crash still occurs after doing this, exiting PSI and then reloading via the start menu.

Using the commands as written nothing happens (i.e. PSI doesn't launch at all when using "psi.exe --dep-allow-atl-emu -S" or "psi.exe --no-force-dep -S"

Adding an extra - so it's "psi.exe --dep-allow-atl-emu --S" or "psi.exe --no-force-dep --S" does launch PSI fine but doesn't seem to save the setting for further launches from the start-menu.

Will these setting survive updates to the full release of version 2 and any future updates?

It looks like these suggestions are mucking around with the Data Execution Prevention feature of Windows. If that's the case, it would be helpful to the "typical" user if instructions were provided for using the Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance(settings) -> Data Execution Prevention method of setting this options, in the manner of:
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-xp/disable...
It would be even better if the program was re-written to be compatible with this protection feature of Windows, as Microsoft suggests "If you suspect that a program does not run correctly when DEP is turned on, check for a DEP-compatible version of the program or an update from the software publisher before you change any DEP settings."

They leave me cold too , but having entered the black box on a few occasions now , if you get and follow good instructions you might surprise yourself . Having an IT knowledgeable helper - a young grandchild perhaps :)) - to handhold is to be recommended where possible .

Having said that , if the "workaround" is not resisting a programme restart , prudence may be the name of the game .

Progress of sorts one hopes ; the PSI 2.0 Beta is worth a look aruond even if it just a one off .

[quote=p25094]

[\quote]

Looks like I may have made a couple of errors in an earlier post.

The first error I made was by specifying sfc /runonce. This should be "sfc /scanonce" (w/o quotes) to run at next system boot. I believe this is correct. Scanonce will prevent sfc from running at every boot, something we do not want. Runonce did not do anything for me as far as I could see when I ran it.

The second error was in not specifying how to find the results of the sfc scan. This is done by going to Event Viewer as before except the system category is highlighted. Go to the source file marked 'Windows File Protection', highlight that and right-click. A box will display showing the results of the scan just made. It helps to note the system time the scan was done to find this entry or else use the 'View' command and then 'Find' then enter windows file protection in the search field.

sfc /scannow works just fine and will repair your protected system files. You may find the boot process is shorter than it was before if you have not done this, like me, in awhile.

In any case, making certain your protected system files are intact is a good idea, especially before installing a new program.

Joe

OK I've got v 2 beta working properly on my XP SP3 box without having to resort to starting via the command line everytime - this is fairly simple to set-up!

Intall v 2 beta - do not allow PSI to launch after install. Open your start menu, all programs, locate the Secunia PSI shortcut, right click and select properties.

Under Target it should say "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\psi.exe"
Change this to "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\psi.exe" --dep-allow-atl-emu
and click apply and then OK.

Launch PSI from the start menu. If it still won't work repeat the above steps but try changing the target to "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\psi.exe" --no-force-dep

Assuming one off these options gets PSI going you still need to change the shortcut that loads PSI on system start-up.

Open the start menu, all programs, startup - you should find another Secunia PSI shortcut. Again right click and select properties.

Under Target it should say "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\psi.exe" --start-in-tray

Change this to either "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\psi.exe" --dep-allow-atl-emu --start-in-tray or "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\psi.exe" --no-force-dep --start-in-tray depending on which option worked for you from the regular shortcut. Click Apply and OK.

V2 Beta should now start up with no problems on XP machines affected by the 1.5.0.2 bug.

Edit to add: Having just tested I can confirm that this fix does not work for 1.5.0.2 only for the v 2 beta.

@jpohedra - excluding PSI from DEP via the system properties does not cure the crash - been there done that.....

Anthony, thanks for your words of comfort.
The thing about command lines: the windows deal is - no need to look under the bonnet, its all easy. But it isn't.
Its shortcomings do mean companies like Secunia are never short of work.

I guess this thread has made me more concerned as the version 2 beta only works under XP3 if you tinker with it - will the released version work with XP3 'out of the box'?

I'll stay with 1.5.01 until this forum gives me the all-clear

Hi bendibuk ,

Message understood ; as you say , the whole thing is totally infuriating and will probably defeat us all ; at least we can go back to cleft stick carriers and pigeon post and let the yoof and their "webmasters" (don't you love the irony in that word) feel out of place for a change .

Looks like the smurphdude may have something even you and I can deal with in the post above your's - I've successfully added to Target script in the past and it is easy to rectify if you foul up and it isn't critical to your box :) + crossed fingers !!

Take care

Thanks for the "grandpa" support. I find that so many things can go wrong if you don't know ENTIRELY what you are doing. Beta programs are always a gamble anyway.

I am with you. I shall wait until the new version is clean and without problems. Until then, v1.5.0.1 works fine. It does its job which is all that is important.

And thanks to all of the rest of you for your help.

another one here running XP SP3 and IE8 plus all relevant patches but can't get 1.5.0.2 or beta 2 to run.

have tried smurphdude's suggestions but no joy so have reinstalled 1.5.0.1 and that works fine

I've tried running the debug log via command line but that doesn't even generate a log!

ah well - at least I have one version working and will keep an eye out for when the newer versions are bug fixed.

I do wonder if it's a virus scanner issue - I run Sunbelt Software's VIPRE

I'm in the UK btw.

I can confirm this, The version downloaded from cnet solves the issue for 1.5.02 on my end.

Not particularly sure why, but that is the case...

I can also confirm that the DEP shortcut workarounds work for me as well on the 2.0 beta.

Interesting about the CNET version of 1.5.0.2 which also works fine for me.

Installer downloaded from CNET - File Size 716KB, Version 1.5.0.2, Digital Signature Timestamp 28 May 2010 12:15:06

Installer downloaded from Secunia - File Size 737Kb, Version 1.5.0.2, Digital Signature Timestamp 21 July 2010 12:56:21.

Can anyone from Secunia shed any light as to the difference between the two versions?

It's interesting that the bug was first reported on 22/7/10 (first post) which appears to be the day after the current version hosted by Secunia was certificated. I note the Secunia download page says 1.5.0.2 was last updated on 28/5/10 and 21/7/10 was also the release date of 1.9.0.2....

Hi,

Instead of downloading the CNET version, please try to follow these steps that I posted earlier in this thread. To make it easier, I will reproduce the post in question here.

Another workaround that gets the current Secunia hosted version of 1.5.0.2 running on my XP3 SP3 Office 2003 machine is after installation go to C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI and right click the PSI.exe and click on properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and check the box that says "Turn off advanced text services for this program".

This also works on beta 2 and the setting survives an update to an alternative PSI version.

Turning off advanced text services globally via the control panel also allows both the Secunia 1.5.0.2 and beta 2 to work without further changes. (Control Panel - Regional and Language Options - Click the Languages tab - Click the Details button - Click the Advanced tab - Make sure that Turn off advanced text services is checked - Click ok, until all the windows are closed)

Advanced text services is I understand installed along with Microsoft office applications to allow alternative inputs such as speech recognition etc to work, if you don't use them then you probably don't need it.....could also explain why someone above found an office upgrade cured the problem.

Me too, same problem. Discussed on a different thread. XP the same symptoms. A day before OK beta on 64 bit Windows 7 laptop.

MY CONCLUSION: I will wait until Secunia fixes it. In the meantime I've installed the dangerous Java so that I can do my updating with Secunia online.

I just want to say, Secunia is fantastic. Glad Brian Krebs spread the word.

I've written the guide so it should be easy to complete without knowing what one is actually doing. Is there a specific step you feel confused about? If so, please let us know, and I'll make the guide easier to use. :)

I realize that using the command prompt can seem intimidating, but the guide is aimed at the casual user, so if you simply reproduce the steps described, you should reach the desireable result.

hope this helps.

Emil, Thanks for spurring me on. It was easy and now I have PSI Beta 2 running. I copied and pasted your instructions into note pad and made the window very thin and log. So I was reading your instructions as I typed the text into the black "run" window. Really, if I can do it anyone - almost anyone can. - David

Hello Emil,

I am the grandma who prefers to wait for an installation comparable to v1.5.0.1, one you just click on, and it does the work for you. I have looked at your prompts a zillion times and just don't feel comfortable fooling around with it.

Will this ever happen or am I forever in v1.5.0.1?

Emil, to make the bug hunting process easier, why don't you guys re-release the beta with an option to create both altered shortcuts, and to have small app included to send the logs after they are generated. Nothing quite like rapid automated data collection...

I would like to add my recent experience in resolving this issue to this thread, if it is not too late.

For some but not all Windows XP users, this may help:

I think there may be a Microsoft Updates issue running around in here somewhere. If you are attempting to install and run Secunia PSI (any version) in Windows XP (any edition) SP3, read on. These instructions do not apply to any other Windows version, nor any previous Service Pack for Windows XP, and are only known to work in 32-bit editions.

If in Windows XP SP3 you were offered or reoffered repeatedly the following MS Update during April through July, 2010, this may apply to you: MS 10-021 / KB 970683 . This was especially common in laptops based on AMD processors.

Errors may have been introduced into your Windows Networking configurations.

In these cases:

WorkStation Service must be Started in MS Services. If this Sefvice is absent or will not start, you may need to dig deeper.

NOTE: BACK UP REGISTRY ENTRIES TO A .REG FILE BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES. This is done by choosing (in RegEdit) FILe>>Export, and first saving the .REG file to your Desktop. Then make a copy of it to a Flash Drive or external drive. If you mess up the Windows Registry, Windows may not start, so the Desktop copy would be unavailable.

Registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\LanmanServer may neeed to be changed to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\LanmanWorkStation

and its DisplayName Value changed from Server to WorkStation.

A couple of reboots may be necessary before the WorkStation Service kicks in and Starts properly.

You may also need to go to your Network Connections in the Windows Control Panel, and right-click on your Network Adapter and go to Properties. There will be several Tabs, and you will need to open the General Tab. Highlight each service listed in the little window and click on its uninstall button. You may need to reboot after some of these changes. Then, go back to the same place and the same tab, and highlight each service in turn and click on the install button. This combination should refresh your Client for Microsoft Networking services. WorkStation Service cannot start without this Client correctly installed. If this Client is not available, a Repair or Reinstall of Windows is recommended. In Windows XP, to do a Repair, you will need any Full Retail Windows XP Install CD or DVD for your edition (Pro for Pro, etc.). The Repair Console does not care about your Product License ID Number. After refreshing the Client, several reboots may be necessary for the WorkStation Service to kick in and Start properly.

For most users, the WorkStation Service should always be set to Automatic (load with Windows).

Any further issues with the WorkStation Service should be referred to Microsoft Support or your favorite on line general Windows user help forum.

I hope all of this helps in those cases where this MS Update (or its failure to install properly) may have been an issue.

Hi Bob ,

Excuse my intrusion but I think you made a typo ; it should be KB979683 ; I remember it well as it brought my Sandboxie software to it's knees . Tzuk got a fix out in aruond 24 hours so that was comforting .

Great find/fix to your proiblem .

Let me see if I understand you correctly, you are saying that the workstation service is not starting properly, and thus is causing the issue? Because according to services.msc, my workstation service is set to autostart, and is running, but yet, I am still having the same issues...

Hi,

With the latest release of the Secunia PSI 2.0 Beta, is this issue still reproduceable?
You can obtain the latest release from here: http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/572...

Some error-handling code have been added, and the PSI should be able to recover from this crash.

Can anyone who previously experienced the problem confirm?

I can confirm that with the latest 2.0 Beta released yesterday, I still require the DEP workaround in the shortcut to prevent from crash on application start.

Hi,

I've suffered this bug with all versions since 1.5.0.2 and the various workarounds have been needed. However as an inveterate tweaker I seem to have narrowed the cause down to a conflict with a particular version of a component of XP/Office Advanced Text Services.

In Classic view go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Click the Languages Tab and the the Details Button. Scroll through the list of installed languages and their subcomponents. If you have any instances of "Handwriting recognition - Drawing Pad" then simply use the Remove button to take them away (it's just as easy to add them back in using the add button if this doesn't solve the bug on your machine or you realise that you need this component). Click apply and then OK and all of the affected versions of Secunia 1.5.0.2 and the betas should load fine with no further workarounds needed.

Last edited on 8th Oct, 2010 08:43 Hi,

For those who are still unable to run the latest Beta:

To trigger the crash-handler in the PSI, the program will have to be run (and crash) 4 times. Once this happens, the PSI "realizes" that it's crashing, and should automatically set the options to prevent it from happening.

Has trying 4 times solved the problem for anyone experiencing this crash?

Anthony, your "intrusions" are always welcome! :)

What did I type? Yes, that is a typo. KB 979683 was the one which (along with Microsoft India's failed installation of Easy Assist and Net Meeting) wrecked my Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit Network Connections area of the Control Panel features. Sorry for any confusion.

Folks, I did not say this is the one and only source of PSI 2 or 1.5 failures to connect to the Internet. But it may have occurred for some users, and it certainly did cause my issues. That's why I bothered to post such detailed description and instructions. PSI may not be the only program affected by such misconfigurations, if you happen to have them.

Even if the WorkStation Service is intact and running, the Client for Microsoft Networking may still be misconfigured. So, reinstalling the components for this Client could still be needed in some cases.

Just adding the benefit of my own experiences to solving this mystery.

I have updated both of my laptops to PSI 2 beta Build 1.9.0.4 without incident. No crashes so far upon which to test the crash handling.

Just a sidebar note:

After making the changes which I recommend, I manually ran Microsoft Updates through IE8. (Yes, I patch way behind schedule with MS Updates. Blame this habit on Woody Leonhard's blog.) Compared with recent runs, the Updates downloads and installations are many times faster now. There are benefits to the changes which extend far beyond getting PSI 2 beta up and running.

My first post here and appreciate all of the information in these notes.

I wimped out on the detailed command cmd suggestions, though, and tried the simple Cnet route which has things working fine for v1.5.0.2.

http://download.cnet.com/secunia-personal-software...

Given the notes I see on the forum for Beta 2.0, maybe I'll wait for a while before I try that one.
My thanks to all of you.

Brilliant! I can confirm that removing the Drawing Pad IME resolves the crashing issues for me.
Curious, how did you come up with that solution?
Also, that being said, any way that Secunia can be remedied so that Drawing Pad doesn't have to be disabled?

Add my voice to the growing, thunderous chorus. I experience the exact same thing (with repeated uninstalls and installs), and the "fixes" also don't work for me. I will check frequently for a resolution.

JUST ONE QUESTION. BUT FIRST . . . .
I gave up on the betas for my XP some time ago -- I don't thrill to the electronic mechanics of computers and I think I lack that specific gray matter that plunges others happily into these operations. Secunia is great, more so for giving individual users PSI for free. Sorry I can't be of help. And thanks again to Brian Krebs for spreading the word.

THE QUESTION: Using the healthy pre-bug, non beta version of PSI, on starting the computer I see the message NEW VERSION OF PSI AVAILABLE. If I install this new version will it be one with the bug that " wont run after install v1.5.0"?
I've downloaded it but won't install until I read it is OK.
THANKS, David.

I disabled all "Handwriting recognition " as this is not a Tablet PC and I have no need for this feature. Evidently this was enabled by a Microsoft update. After removing "Handwriting recognition " the upgrade to 1.5.0.2 installed and opened.
