Each time I press "solution" to patch a vulnerability, I get an error message that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and closes.

Hi nickjacob. Welcome to the forum.

So that someone here can help you, you'll need to let us have more information.

(A) which version of IE are you using?

(B) What file(s) has Secunia picked up as vulnerable? This is what you should do next:

1 Go to the main Secunia PSI window & click on ‘Advanced’ if it’s underlined in blue. (Don't be put off by the name "Advanced"! It's easy to follow/use.)

2 Click on “+” to highlight & expand it.

3 Click on “Technical Details” (in Toolbox”)

4 This will give you the installation path of the vulnerable file(s). Please copy & paste it in your next reply here.

(C) Which version of Secunia are you are using? (It may be relevant.) It's shown in the bottom-right of the main Secunia screen.

(D) Finally, please post some info about your PC etc - e.g. see my signature below.

Thanks.

Hi nickjacob;

Welcome to the Secunia forum.

Please try this first:
=======
> Is IE your default browser? If yes, continue. If no or unsure, click on "Start", click on "Control Panel", click on "Add or Remove...". In the left hand column, click on "Set Program Access and Defaults". Click on "Custom". At the top, "Choose a default Web browser", to the right of Internet Explorer, make a check in the box next to "Enable access to this program." if not present. At the bottom, click on "OK".

> Still in "Control Panel", click on "Internet Options", click the "Security" tab, click on "Trusted Sites". Click on "Sites" button and add these, http://*.secunia.com & https://*.secunia.com (make no typos). When listed, click "Close", then click "OK".

> If using Windows Firewall, still in "Control Panel", click on "Windows Firewall", click the "Exceptions" tab. If "Secunia PSI" is not listed, click the "Add Program..." button, click on "Secunia PSI", click on "OK". There must be a check to the left of Secunia PSI. Click on "OK".

> If not using Windows Firewall, add to list of exceptions for the firewall used.
=======
Does this solve the problem? If not post here for more help.

Regards;

Fred

@Fred ,

In the second part of your instructions you have missed a vital step , point #8 ***in this part of FAQ's :-

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

Anthony

PS : ***not to mention #4,5 and 6 .

PPS ; it is not essential to have IE as your default browser , it is essential to configure it correctly in all cases .

@nickjacob, Anthony is correct, in the second step, in "Trusted Sites", make sure the "Require server verification..." box is unchecked.

@Ant, thanks, I do not know how step '#8' was missed. Especially since I had a problem with it when first setting up PSI.

Steps '#4,5 & 6' were not omissions as I did not simply copy the instructions in FAQ. Evidently, I've not run across someone with Active Scripting disabled. My advise will be amended to address these items.

You failed to mention the 'unmarked step # 12' regarding the SSL certificate. This appears to be an afterthought by Secunia as it is not part of the list.

I only asked if IE was the default, did not recommend to change. The second part of that step was: "If no or unsure ... to the right of Internet Explorer, make a check in the box next to "Enable access to this program." if not present."

Hi,

Which version of IE are you running?
Have you installed all available patches for IE?
And have you tried rebooting?
