PSI says both Microsoft word and outlook insecure requiring updates, but none are available.

Hi arbutus12;

edit: This assumes you have Auto Updates turned on.

Not to over simplify, but the first thing to try is power down all the way (not just Standby or Hibernate), then reboot. When everything's done loading, do a full manual scan in PSI. There were several MS updates to the OS as well as various versions of Office. At least one of those required a reboot on both my machines.

> Does this solve the problem?

Hi,

Microsoft Updates frequently require a reboot before updates "kick in". To properly patch, please try following this procedure:

1) Check Microsoft Update, installing all available patches
2) Reboot
3) Repeat step one, if anything was installed, repeat step two
4) Rescan with the PSI.

hope this helps.

Have tried that with no success. They still show up as insecure.

Hi,

Please try clicking the "+" button next to the vulnerabilities being shown. There should be a field called "online references", one of them leading to a Secunia advisory. Could you please paste the link to those advisories here?

Hi arbutus12;

I have Office 2003 installed & working.

Using Add/Remove, the update for Outlook that dracudok references (KB980373) was installed on my machine on 7/14. The last update for Outlook, installed 8/12, was the Junk E-mail Filter (KB2279246).

The SA40566 shows:
"Original Advisory
MS10-045 (KB978212, KB980371, KB980373, KB980376):
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin..."

This is the update dracudok suggests for Outlook.

> What is the version number of outlook.exe that PSI points to?
> Using Add/Remove, what is the KB##### of any Outlook updates shown?
(Don't forget to put a 'check' in the "Show updates" box.)

Hi arbutus12,

MBSA (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?di...) is another choice to check if your system is up to date.

Besides checking general security settings the tool also reports missing Windows and Office security updates and provides links to the corresponding MS security bulletins.

Checked the update and none of those show up, my last update for Office was October last year.

MBSA also says they are all there.

Outlook version 11.0.8312.0

Word version 11.0.8307.0

the most recent versions should be:

WINWORD.EXE: 11.0.8326.0

not sure I understand the process. Does the updates work? or not?

I have looked on line to update but it just refers me back to the windows update control panel which says everything is there.

I don't see any update to the new version of the software anywhere on the web or being offered through updates.

Hi arbutus12,

did you extend the function of "Windows Update" to "Microsoft Update"? If not, Windows Update won't show you the Office Updates.

The procedure of activating Microsoft Update depends on the Operating System you use (you didn't tell it):

With Windows XP use Internet Explorer to go to the Windows Update page, click the "Microsoft Update" link on top of the page and follow the procedure ...

With Windows Vista or later start "Windows Update" within Control Panel and use "Change Settings" to activate "Microsoft Update".

By the way: Is Service Pack 3 for Office 2003 already installed (you can check this by "?|Info" within any Office 2003 program)? If not, download and install it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?di... (change to the correct language first).

Hi,

Could you please try applying this update?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa...

After this update is successfully installed, please reboot, and try to check Microsoft Update again. If any patches are now shown as available, install them, before rebooting again, then scannig with the PSI.

hope this helps.

1st - Thank you one and all for all your help in trying to solve this.

Tried to install the Microsoft update, but as in the past was told "the update cannot not be applied" .

Hi,

In your situtation, I would suggest contacting Microsoft Support. Keep in mind that Secunia does not prepare or release any of the Microsoft or third-party patches we try to track, and that our tools merely act as messengers.

The PSI depends on a working installation of Microsoft Update.
