Hi barbareska;

You have not stopped Kaspersky automatic updates by mistake?

I think not, but need to ask. :)

I have done a similar thing in the past. Very embarrassing!

Hello Barbareska ,

This Secunia Advisory says that KIS 2010 9.0.0.463 is insecure since December 2009 , it does not mention your earlier version 9.0.0.459 but it does say prior versions could be affected:-

http://secunia.com/advisories/37730/

Kaspersky have just launched their new KIS 2011 , so if the upgrade from 2010 to 2011 is free it may be worth looking at ; just be aware that new version/upgrades can sometimes have "teething probleme" !!

I would be interested to hear what Kaspersky tell you . Do let us know .

Prost :))

Anthony

EDIT : yhis SA says that you need to update to version 9.0.0.736 :-

http://secunia.com/advisories/37398/

Please excuse all the edits :((((

Hi Anthony,
Thank you a lot for your "hot" tip - but imagine I bought Kaspersky in Decembre 2009 and installed it at the same time with windows 7 - so it was rong from the very beginning - my updating didnt work either ! now I installed "9.0.0.736" and it seemed to be alright -
in case I get an answer from "K" you get it I promise
Im used to get a lot of edits and prefer to look only at the later ones !
thanks and regards,

Hello Barbareska ,

Looks like a problem with the KIS software update rather than the (daily or whenever) automatic virus database updates . Are you sure these are working ??

The actual vulnerability in KIS was not severe , but all the same if it were me , I would want a full explanation from Kaspersky . I would also want to know why the PSI has only just now (this week) shown that you have/had a vulnerable version when the SA dates to last December .

Maybe someone from Secunia will have some info to add .

Ask if you need anything .

Anthony

Hi Anthony,
I dont know if the automatic virus database updates always worked - I believed in it !
I didnt get an answer from KIS - but I wrote that I want a full explanation, why I had to use an "old" version - from the beginning and the whole updating had brought nothing at all !
What I dont know to handle is: your proposal to get to know from PSI why they showed up the vulnerable version n o w and not already in December ? Maybe you know the way?
thank you and have a nice weekend,

Hi Barbareska ,

Best wait to see what "K" have to say first and then see if Secunia can add to it .

No rush , your KIS is updated , so you can wait and see for a few days :))

Hi Anthony,
I got an answer from "K" but instead of an explanation Ive to give them the following infos:
1) open the downloadlink: http://support.kaspersky.com/de/downloads/utils/ge... and save: "GetSystemInfo.exe"
2) perform(execute) "getsysteminfo.exe" with a doubleklick
(Attention: if you have WVista - klick on with the right side of the mouse - "as administrator")
3) As soon as the necessary infos are gathered the diagnoseprogramm will be closed automatically
4) Please send us the file - which shows on your desktop - per email
5) the name of the file is: GetSystemInfo_COMPUTERNAME_USER_DATE_TIME.zip
6) At the Start or while the diagnose-software works - the proactiveshield of K-Software can interfere - in that case stop for a while the protection of K
7) The infos you give us will be handled truly confidential !
As soon as as we have the infos the analysis can last 24 hours
This comes from Martin Fellmeth, Techn. Supp. Engineer, Kaspedrsky Labs GmbH, Ingolstadt - email-adr.: retail-support@kaspersky.de
Please, Anthony, send me your opinion to that mail - I wont do anything until I hear from you - (you know I have downloaded K 9.0.0.736 in the meantime)
kind regards,
barbareska
PS: I had to correct the 214 hours !

Hello Barbareska. It seems they ask you for a disgnostic file from your system in order to investigate your problems. I use Avira Premium Security Suite and they also use a diagnostic in case of problems have to be investigated. Once I looked through such a file but didn't understand it's contents. As for the privacy of our data you have to rely on Kespersky and I think that a company like that will risk their good name by abusing private data of their customers. Anyway I do trust Avira and see no problems.

Hello Barbareska ,

I think Lk's comments are very helpful . Such a diagnosis log is the best way for "K" to check it's software programme and how it runs on your system .

I would send the log file to them ; plus they need to know and you need to emphasise when and the reason why you have just updated to 9.0.0.736 . They might not be able to do a proper historical review , but it will show if KIS is correctly installed now and running as it should ; that is important .

Hope that is clear , if not ask :)

Don't believe it without seeing it, you might be unsafe without knowing. Most of the antivirus software have a easy to configure logging which shows you the updates processed and eventually failed updates. With Avira I can keep track on the update process and do not miss any update.

Hi Anthony,
today I got a mail from "K" - no excuse, no regret....
but to deinstall the "old K" , to install:
http://ftp.kaspersky.com/products/german/homeuser/... and to activate the programm with the old lizenzcode -
I`ve decided to activate Avira - when Kaspersky ends in December - I really dont want to buy a programm when errors like that occur and the company is not as fair as apologize for it !
I thank you very much for your help and Im glad that I can write to you if I have problems,
kind regards,
barbareska

I experienced technical problems with Avira Premium Security Suite some time ago which couldn't be repaired by a normal way. Avira investigated by using a diagnostic tool The outcome was that I had to uninstall and re-install Avira. But they also did some redesign to prevent this which was implemented in a later version of the 'engine'. The result of that was that, when it happens again the customer can do with a simple 'repair' with a file downloaded from their site. This is is less difficult because it automatically copies the license, copies the settings and is less time consuming. Don't know if this is the same with the Free version. Overall, Avira is more user friendly then Kaspersky.

OK and luck with K for the next months. As for Avira, you have a choice between the Free version and the pro-versions AntiVir Premium (e19,95 a year) and Antivir Premium Security Suite (e39,95 a year). The payed versions have always a 30days free test period. I have hands-on experience about these versions and can always help you configuring the best way.

Hello Barbareska ,

If you have an up to date and functioning correctly version of KIS , then that is the basic response you should expect from "K" . It is not easy for the bigger vendors to do much more and your updating before you ran their log and that the PSI has only just picked up the problem a few days ago looks very complex (to me) to get much more from them .

Now you have reloaded KIS using thier link ; if you have the time and energy , you could make a last effort and ask "K" why they think this happened . Then you/we could ask Secunia support if they know of anything .

Personally , I doubt if this will get you much further than where you are now and what is done is the past .

To my knowledge both "K" and Avira offer very good quality products and get very good test reviews , but the secret of finding the one that works best (for you) is to find the one you know the most about , you can configure it and it gives you the most confidence .

Hope that is clear , if not ask again .

Anthony

PS : time to finish your other thread and get a proper 100% mark .
