Hi. I am told that Quick Time is a category 4 threat and needs to be updated. The download is quite large, but I object to having to read pages of eula. Do I really need Quick Time? What can I use instead? Thanks.

Why not just uninstall it. If in the future U attempt to use an Apple (Mac)offering that requires its use U will be advised to download it.

"VLC media player" may be an alternative (http://www.videolan.org/).

@ jitterbug

Beside advices mentioned, try Real Player from this site:

http://www.real.com/realplayer

Good luck.

Hello John:

I checked Real Time and the Eula is longer still than Quick Time. You need a lawyer to understand these licenses. I will try to get along without either one for the time being. Thanks.

@jitterbug ,

By my estimate if I had to read and understand all my EULA's I'd never get onto the www. I might be safer , but would likely still find some malware somewhere , knowing my luck .

Here's a link to Gizmo's site review of Media players ; they are renowned for "unbiased" advice on "freeware":-

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-windows-...

The rest of the site is useful if you have other software/things to look for .

I'm not inclined to recommend software , but I do know DivX ; they do a quality player and have a free version and of course , the usual EULA :-

http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus

More study time :((

Anthony

EDIT : changed DivX link .

Hi Tony:

I am going to check out both the sites you recommend. I'm sick of reading eulas, but maybe that's the price of freeware. I already think I'm going to like it.

Thanks very much.

Real Player is a HOG! I don't advise using it unless nothing else works. It interferes with many programs.

@Jitterbug

U are clearly conscientious about total security. Reading EULA's, Privacy Statements & carefully watching any new install is part of that process. Installing programmes, particularly "freebies" without doing so is foolhardy.

Have U checked this programme?

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/eulalyzerpro.html#...

There are two versions as U will see. Clearly U get more if U pay the annual fee of $20. I have used it for years - it takes the hassle out of reading EULA's line by line.

Checking the vulnerability status of any recommended programme is also important.

If U check the security record of Real Player (Real Networks) for example, against the advisories issued by Secunia, I think U will find their programmes have more security holes than a fisherman's net.

Hope this helps U decide.

Hello.

I no longer have QuickTime because I deleted it, but you do have a good point there about it being safe enough. I have to think about all this.

Secunia is great!
