Hello
This is my first post;I ran psi simple and all was fine. I then ran advanced and Adobe Flashplayer with plugin, Shockwave player, Real Player were all flagged as insecure.
I removed them.
Thereafter, I received a pdf file to open but was unable.
I reinstalled the programs - Adobe reader was already installed.
When the form appeard I could not type on it.
First, please correct what I did and second, how do you type on a pdf questionaire?
Thank you for your help.
Peter

Peter,
Can U clarify a few points before I attempt to help U.

1. What OS are U using & which version of PSI (I think from your description U are using 1.5.0.2)?

2. After carrying out a full scan are there any outstanding INSECURE or END of LIFE programmes showing?

3.If there are any what are the paths?

FINDING A FILE PATH - ALL PSI VERSIONS EXCEPT VERSION 2 (BETA)

To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, use or switch to the ADVANCED interface, then :

1 Click on the + sign of the programme to "expand' it.
2 Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file. (Copy (CTRL+C) & paste (CTRL+V) the Installation Path of the file back to the Forum if U are unsure what to do next.

PSI VERSION 2 (BETA)

From the DASHBOARD page click on RESULTS.

1. This will show U the file that is vulnerable.
2. Click the + sign next to the file.
3. This will reveal the path.
4. Highlight it then copy (CTRL+C) & then paste (CTRL+V) that path back to the Forum if U do not know what to do next.

In general, Adobe Reader does not allow you to alter a PDF. You need Adobe Acrobat to do that. If the PDF author has incorporated the form filling facility, this Adobe article describes how to use it http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Reader/9.0/index.html .

>>When I click on reply for Mauice, Marshall's post appears so I had to click quote'.
I am using Windows xp sp3.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe AIR\Versions\1.0\Adobe AIR.dll

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Adobe\Director\SwDir.dll

I saw no outstanding or end of life programs.
I went to both simple and advanced but saw no tool box, neither did I see a dashboard although I know what you mean.
Below are the results of what i see when I click on the plus sign in front of the patched programs.
Sorry if I am not being accurate but am not familiar with this program -however, I plan to be.
I will now try to reply to Marshall's post, although I do not understand, like other forums , why, when I click on Maurice's post, Marshall's appears.
Thank you,
Peter

Marshall
I do have Acrobat.com installed and have read the tutorial.
My problem is that when I use the pointer or hand to touch a line in the Adobe document I want to fill in, nothing happens.
A person told me Adobe docs are usually not the best format to try to fill in questionnaires and applications etc.
I tied to understand the tutorial but could not.
I did ask the sending party to send the application as a .doc extension as i do have Word.
Ta k you
Peter
P.S. I tried to click on just your post at first but Maurice's appeared which is confusing and contrary to my experience in other forums;I asked him why and hope to hear. I want to familiarize myself with this forum as I like the product and obviously need to study more.
Thank you
Peter

This forum uses a simple form where each thread is just a list of replies. Everyone who is subscribed to a thread gets all the replies.

Confusingly, Acrobat.com and Adobe Acrobat are different things. Adobe Acrobat is a paid for program (hundreds of dollars) that you install on your system. I gave up with Acrobat.com soon after it was released, so I'm not sure if it will do what you want.

Hello
I will use the simple scan from now on as my skill level will be commensurate with it.
Secunia says things are fine now.

Regarding the application sent as extensions Windows cannot open , then as a pdf file which requires Acrobat Reader which I now know is not Acrobat.com.
I am requesting it be sent just like the IRS or other agencies that properly send out forms to fill out.
I would like to thank Marshall and Maurice for their patience and help with my first post.

Peter,
Try & stick with the Advanced Mode. There are many benefits for U.
When time allows why not wade through this - it should help U understand things better.

SETTING UP PSI IN THE ADVANCED MODE - ALL PSI VERSIONS EXCEPT VERSION 2 (BETA)

Are U using the latest version of PSI that has the added feature of automatic updates for some programmes? If not,and U would like to try it the download link & details from Jakob Balle are here:
http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/532...

Whatever version U currently use try this:

1. Open PSI by clicking the System tray icon or right click the icon & select Reload Interface.

2.Select the OVERVIEW tab.

3. In the top right corner U will see INTERFACE MODE - SIMPLE/ADVANCED. To be in the advanced mode the word SIMPLE should be blue and advanced black.

4. If advanced is blue click it. A message about advanced users may appear - ignore it - using the advanced mode is easy.

SETTING UP PSI FOR MAXIMUM ASSISTANCE
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

1. Click on the SETTINGS tab.

2. The top box should be empty & the two remaining boxes ticked.

3. Right at the bottom is a facility to create Global Ignore Rules. By default PSI scans & publishes the results on all the hard drives of a PC. OEM partition (reinstallation) drives (normally drive D),second internal or external drives SOLELY used to backup your work & C:\Windows\i386 which can be ignored as they have no exposure. To save confusion in the future (by way of "false positives") U may consider it a good idea to create some Global rules now.

4. A separate Ignore Rule is required for each drive which can be set up as follows:

a.Click on CREATE IGNORE RULE

b.In the RULE NAME BOX insert something like MY BACKUP DRIVE (MY PARTITION DRIVE)

c.In the RULE BOX type D:\(or the drive letter U wish to ignore) - For folder i386 use C:\Windows\i386.

d.Click SAVE IGNORE RULE>CLOSE

All drives will continue to be scanned by default but the result from the ignored list will not be published.

This thread has an article by @Anthony Wells that may also be of help in understanding the advanced mode:

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/375...

It does not contain details of the auto update feature but that is very simple to use. There is a list of programmes under AUTO UPDATES - just tick (check mark) any U want PSI to auto update for U.

If a new Forum Member U might find these interesting reading as well:

I have read everything you have referred to me and understand it all;however, the global rule I have yet to digest.
Thank you so much for your cooperation and I am sure i will be back with more questions. I have attended to the problems detected in the advanced mode to the extent of removing insecure programs such as QuickTime. I did not remove the 6 Java items that were detected in the registry as they did not say QuickTime specifically, although they may have been part of the program.
I have to update my browsers but I have them set to automatically update so I will see what is going on there.
All is running well.
Peter

Good news.

If all your problems are now resolved could U please lock (Accept) the thread. This will prevent us all from receiving update emails from "tag on" posts.

I do not see any accept per se or a way to lock.
I will give it thumbs up and hope that suffices.
Thank you

PS - After replying, I cannot give thumbs up. How do I lock?

I thought @ddmarshall had explained that to U. On each post made there should be 5 options.

REPLY - QUOTE - ACCEPT - a THUMBS UP & THUMBS down.

U should have the options to ACCEPT any post once it solves your problem. That locks the Thread & no one can then add any new posts.

Much better if U create your own thread & explain exactly what problems U have with Adobe.

What OS & SP are U using?
What is the path to the problem file(s)?

This thread could be locked at anytime which will prevent any further additions to it.
