I have started to get status of 'Insecure' against Microsoft Word 2002. I have checked previous threads and confirmed that I have KB2251389 installed on 12th August 2010 by Microsoft Update. Why is PSI showing it as 'Insecure' ? |

HI You need to reboot and run a full scan for M$ updates to be validated . Have you done so ?? If this does not resolve the issue , what is the "installation path" showing for the insecure problem detected by the PSI?? Anthony EDIT : the latest M$updates of the 12/10/2010 offer KB 979687 for XP and the same for other OS with KB 979688 added . Have you installed these . The latest bunch of M$ updates contain many critical patches for exploits currently being used to attack computers . Check with M$ updates and see what they are offering you . -- It always seems impossible until its done. Nelson Mandela |

I have done many reboots since the update was installed. The application path is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\WINWORD.EXE Les |

It does not look like I have any Microsoft patches installed in October. Last update was KB2288608 on 15th September 2010. Les |

| Hi, When updating Microsoft Products, it is important to keep in mind that patches from Microsoft usually don't "kick in" until after a full reboot. Therefore, I suggest trying this procedure: 1) Check Microsoft Update, install all available patches 2) Reboot 3) Repeat step 1, and if anything was installed at this step, go to step 2 4) Run a full rescan with the PSI. Has following this procedure exactly resolved the issue? |

Hello Les , In addition to my EDIT in my post which only covers WordPad , Word has a major update KB2293194 as of 12/10/2010. To get it you need to go to Microsoft Updates (not Windows updates) and download what is on offer . Have you done this ?? What is your OS ?? Anthony -- It always seems impossible until its done. Hi Emil, The short answer is no. For some reason when I try to run Microsoft Updates manually, I always fail with the validation tool. I cannot explain why as it used to work in the past. What happens now is that the Microsoft Update process takes place automatically without my intervention. I only know when I Shutdown after a Microsoft Release date and the system informs me that there are updates being installed. Les |

Les , Here is the update for Word 2002 on XP :- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx... Concerning the validation , you should be asked to accept a new tool download to correct your refusal of entry . Anthony -- It always seems impossible until its done. Nelson Mandela |

Hi Emil, I did a new validate of XP and Office products using the Microsoft internet Validate tool. I then tried Microsoft Update and it came up with 5 application updates, including the latest Word one, but it also wanted to install an XP SP3 update, KB936929 from 2009 and this failed. I've tried it twice and unless I can get this on, the 5 application updates will be on hold. Les |

Hi Emil, I set Microsoft Update to run automatic and 3 office updates were installed. The XP SP3 update (KB936929), IE8 and Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830) failed to install. However, PSI now shows no ''Insecure' applications! Thanks, Les |

Hello Les , Glad to hear you got re-validated for M$updates - essential if you have Office products . Your KB 890830 for the Malware tool dates to January 2005 so can be ignored - you can set it not to be offered at Microsoftupdates if you select custom install and "untick it's box , should it reappear. Your KB 936929 dates to May 2008 and is for "IT Professionals and Developers" - so again you can probably ignore it . You don't say which KB was offered for IE . Anyway if the PSI says you are up to date , you most likely are . If you wish to crosscheck which M$ patches you have installed you can see them in Add/Remove , your download history at M$updates and you can always run the free Belarc Advisor :- http://belarc.com/free_download.html Come back if any of your problems persist/return . Take care Anthony -- It always seems impossible until its done. Nelson Mandela |

Hi Emil, Thanks for that update and useful information. There was no reference number associated with IE8. I think you can close this now. Thanks again for your help. Les |
