The computer repair person installed this to deal with a codec no longer working. He said it was cheap/free and worked.
Any replacement needs to have the same characteristics.

There are lots of free media players, but you need to tell us what type of media or file (what is the file extension, and is it sound or video, or what is the format, etc), or what particular codec you need. Then maybe someone can tell you which media player would work.

Hi,
If you're running a legal MS-Windows XP or Vista, you should be able to download Media Player from MS.
You can choose the version you need to dl at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/down...
Versions 10 and 11 will identify the missing codec if you're missing one, then just google around to find it.

I just tried to download and install Windows Media Player 11. About halfway through the installation it stopped. When I went to the webpage it suggested I received the following message:
You've encountered error message 8007F06B while using Windows Media Player. Additional information is not currently available for this error.

People are confused because you didn't mention Media Player Classic again in your text. It's long out of date and so far has no takers for updating. I decided to uninstall it because it's insecure and there's other free players out there that are better and secure. As possible alternatives, take a look at VLC Player, which is among the most versatile around, and the one I like best for most videos, Zoom Player. It's always good to have WMP around too.
To solve your problem installing WMP, two ideas: 1) do a google search on the key part of the error message, like the code; and 2) failing that, look up the microsoft.public newsgroup for windows media player and post there. Newsgroups can be found and subscribed to either through your email client, depending on how your ISP handles them, or online through google groups. |

I didn't know someone else had taken it on. However, pick your (non-English) language - and good luck figuring out which is the stable version. |

That site seems to be hosting the nightly builds of Media player classic home cinema edition. the homepage for that version is:
http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/index.html
Thats where you'll be able to find the latest stable version.

I think you can find the explanation here:
http://secunia.com/advisories/26806/
and here:
http://secunia.com/advisories/26591/
There are (at least) two security problems with this program that can be used to get system access to your computer... and the product is discontinued, from the solution section: "The original version is no longer maintained and an official fix is not available".
So there are two critical problems in this program without any patch available...

The "last version" you supplied is from 2006, 6.4.9.0, which is the version Secunia flagged. A google search shows a new version 6.4.9.1 updated Nov 15, 2008:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_C... I can't vouch for it having solved the security problems Secunia mentions. |

current version is
6.4.9.1 Rev 86
latest k-lite codec pack/k-lite mega codec pack already includes newest version, you can uninstall all your codecs and players and download these usefulls packs at www.codecguide.com (the installer even repairs a lot of broken things that can mess codecs)
you can download player alone from official site:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/
current official changelog:

What's with some of you posting old or incomplete links! The first URL goes to the Home Cinema version, which is different than the regular version. And both URLs are redundant and less complete than the link I gave. |

for those who don't know sourceforge, if you click download on first url you'll get:
DirectShow Filters FLV Splitter 1.0.0.5 November 15, 2008 Download
DirectShow Filters (64-bit) Matroska Splitter 1.0.3.0 January 27, 2008 Download
Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 November 15, 2008 Download
and well the changelog is not redundant, you need to read before saying things about links, why?
-by the version you can see that it is media player classic not cinema
-it shows it was updated 2 weeks ago
-last and more important it shows that both security issues secunia keep were solved |

I'm not seeing what you are claiming for the first. Your link clicked on directly leads here to http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/. There, the first and only apparently related line is "Media Player Classic - Home Cinema mod 2008-05-28." The link I gave lists both versions. As for the changelogs, I think different authors compiled them. |

bartman1... I wonder if you would please explain exactly what I need to do to update this player on my PC? Do I uninstall my older version first and then download and install the newer version via your link? Does your link http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/
include these codecs you are talking about? Does your quote "latest k-lite codec pack/k-lite mega codec pack already includes newest version" mean that is what is included at your link? I don't understand about uninstalling codecs??? Can't I just uninstall the older version of the player and then install the updated version? I would be very grateful if you could be a little more specific for someone who doesn't know a great deal about this.
Thank you very much.

Try uninstall everything related to codecs, if something fails keep going. Restart your computer and download latest k-lite codec pack from www.codecguide.com
as I said k-lite codec pack installer includes media player classic and tries to fix your system if some codec is bad installed.
If you don't kno what to uninstall just uninstall mpc and any other codec pack you have intalled |

I have fixed mpc simply by doing this.
-
1 uninstall real alternative + k lite codec pack.
If you have both on your PC there will/could be two MPC's on your PC.
-
2 Install real alternative first WITHOUT MPC
-
3 Install codec pack of your choice ( I prefer full version )
Dont install MPC regular instead take cinema version.
-
End of problem.
-
P.S. There are NO programs/applications in IGNORE list.

I had it, but deleted it since I had other supported players that did the same thing.
If you don't have the answer yet, try Googleing for the type of info you want view. This generally works. |

Add Media Player Classic to your ignore list. Secunia is giving a "false Positive" for this great and patched software.
Read the threads on this post at the Doom9's forum ..................
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=128616&hig...+updates&page=21 .
The issue of Secunia false positives for Media Player Classic is addressed on several of the posts.
The software developers that post on Doom9's forum have probably forgotten more about audio/video computer issues than the Microsoft techs, who created "secure" DRM bloatware such as Windows Media Player , ever knew in the 1st place !
Secunia is great security software , and it will stay in my computer security tool box! But I have never seen any anti-virus,anti-spy ware or other security software, etc. that didn't give a false positive every now and then.
What I like about Secunia , is that it lets you decide what is safe or not. It only give it's scan results , then a user can do his/her own research .

Amadaemon,
Could you please help me with this? I just uninstalled Real Player Alternative which happened to include the Media Player Classic. I would like to install an updated, secure version of Real Alternative but am so confused by all the posts on this thread I do not know where to begin.
Years ago, I installed the Real Player Alternative which also included the Media Player Classic, and that's ALL I ever installed (none of the codecs talked about in this thread). I don't know anything about codecs or even what they are, and I have never installed any, and everything always worked perfect on my PC playing Real Media files.
So, now that I have uninstalled Real Player Alternative which included Media Player Classic, exactly where do I find an updated, secure version of Real Alternative (I need a link to a secure Real Alternative download, please), and do I have to install anything else with it?
Will a new Real Player Alternative include an updated version of Media Player Classic? And, if it does why do I need Media Player Classic when ALL I really want is the Real Player Alternative?
I really need specific information and step-by-step instructions PLEASE, and I need links to the correct program(s) and their actual names. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give me.
