Hello Morten ,

Ian "Gizmo" Richards put me on to "Sandboxie" and the (then) OSI in his now (most sadly) defunct "newsletter , at pretty much the same time .

The list contains some mighty programmes and fierce competition !! As you asked first and because I am hopeless at choosing by myself , I have given the Secunia PSI my vote .

Take care

Anthony

Hi Morten and All;

I don't know what to pick. I'm a big supporter of freeware. There's stuff out that comes very close and even surpasses paid for software. The fact that these people/vendors can do this on a voluntary, pay as you can basis is amazing.

Of course, security programs have to head the list. In light of that (please, don't shoot me), I would say many of the free version of AV's and firewalls would be numero uno. However, AV and firewall programs can't stop everything, patched software plugs security holes. That being a given on almost any computer, PSI would need to be the top utility. Other "Inspector" programs do not even compare.

I relent, PSI gets my vote. As Anthony said,

If you have checked back to the polls they have taken off all our votes because they say "it was an orchestrated voting campaign." I was so pissed I decided to write a letter. Here it is.

"I was sorely disapointed by your decision to cast out all votes for Secunia PSI. Just because the campaign told you to vote for it does not necessarily mean that everyone would vote for it. Second, if other companies/websites wanted to start their own voting campaigns, I see nothing wrong with that. Just because Secunia had the brains to start a voting campaign does not mean the thousands of votes should have been done away with. I hope that Secunia wins this voting process run by a dictatorship who decides to silence the voice of the voters."

Keep the votes coming and write letters and maybe they will let the voice of the people be heard.

Knowing Gizmo's site as I do , I was afraid that might happen as they were asking their "regular" site users first to suggest the list and then to vote in an independent fashion on the top 20 out of some 200+ suggestions .

Morten's thread here was enterprising , but Secunia is a commercial organisation and this is "marketing" even tho' the PSI is free and there is a huge vote plug/button in the latest GUI .

Without being prompted , I , possibly like Fred (see above) , would likely have been torn in choosing between either one or two leading programmes (not the N#1) and one at the same (very low) initial level as the PSI and the PSI . The PSI is in about the same place as it was pre-campaign .

It is their website and they set the rules . I have only once had any serious disagreement with them and they were most gracious about it .

Here is what Gizmo actually says :-

QUOTE :Update: Looks like somebody has organized a large scale "Vote for Secunia PSI" campaign. Pretty effective too - 7000 votes in 12 hours! Unfortunately this means we have had to cancel out all votes cast for Secunia and will continue to do so until the poll closes. Too bad as it is a really great product and was running a strong 4th in our poll prior to the orchestrated voting campaign.UNQUOTE

Getting up to 4th from about 15th before it was noticed was interesting :))

Nothing to lose any sleep over and it's that time for me .

Take care

Anthony

@Ant, sorry to disagree, but...

Greetings;

This is disappointing. Let me try to shorten my thoughts with bullet-points.

> I know for a fact that half of the list has help forums.
> I suspect the rest also do.
> The Secunia forum is quite possibly the best help forum on the net.
> This forum has the most active participation by company officials, period.

> Most on the list have 'paid for' versions or commercial programs.
> The rest rely on 'donations' to operate.
> Marketing techniques are used by all to promote products.
> Secunia's PSI is totally free to individual users.

> Were a list of "Rules" forwarded to any of the participants?

Because a manufacturer/vendor has commercial interests is a moot point. If any has a more defined separation of free to 'paid for' customers it is Secunia. I'm sure a few IT pros have discovered CSI because they tried OSI or PSI on their own computer first. But really now, how many could that be?

The greatest marketing benifit PSI could have, is known as "Market Presence" or "Name Recognition". Secunia does not sell OSI to Mom & Pop corner stores, they sell to corporations (hence the "C" in CSI). I don't believe most IT Managers have the time or care to look at free software polls except out of curiosity.

I could go on but let me finish with this statement.

Just because the Secunia forum has the largest (my perception) active participation and that Secunia took advantage of that for some free promotion of PSI, is not a good reason to invalidate the votes (opinions) of thousands of persons, other vendors had it within their means to do the same and chose not to.

Respectfully;

Frederick L. Stogsdill

p.s. Went back & voted again! (Te, he)

I will admit, the 'vote for me' button on the program interface was a bit over the top. Glad to see it's removed.

I've just voted for Secunia; 'twas a "no-boner", teccy-talk for "no thought needed".

The reason is simple imho - before we discovered Secunia, how many of us realised that many program updates (especially Adobe) left the old, insecure program in place, leaving us vulnerable? Not many, I suspect.

Pre-Secunia, most of us would update our firewall & anti-virus stuff and then feel totally secure.

As I've said many times before, many thanks Secunia!

Hi All;

Well, looking at the list, I guess I use the wrong freeware.

MSE is #1 with Opera a close 2nd? Ccleaner deserved third, at least.

At least PSI got 606 votes and came in 4th.

I still can't believe MSE & Opera. IMHO MSE is a very good AV for someone who knows how to check e-mails and play cards (i.e. lacks controls but is good otherwise). I've never tried Opera, it may be wonderful, but observing the users on this and other forums, most run FF or Chrome. Maybe Opera users don't have problems or have the need to post to help forums?

Happy New Year;

Fred
