I have been using the previous Secunia free software until I got the notice for the new version today. I downloaded and installed, but when I try to open the program the window opens up and then closes right away. I am using windows XP professional and any feedback is appreciated. Thanks happy holidays.

This is the Secunia advice - used it yesterday & worked perfectly.

For those unable to open the PSI User Interface on Windows XP SP3, there are several solutions that have worked for different users. If any of these solutions work for you, please post back here and let me know which one.

1) Ensure that the workstation service is running.
This service is enabled by default, so unless you disabled it, it should be activated.

2) Go to where you installed the PSI (Probably C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI), right-click PSI.exe, go to the Compatability tab, and set a check at 'Turn off advanced text services for tihs program'

3) Go to Control Panel > Regional and language options > Languages Tab > Details > Advanced. From here, set a check at 'Turn off advanced text services'
(Please note that this is a global setting unlike what is described in step 2).

I'm having exactly the same problem as described above. Tried the solutions suggested above but to no effect. I still can't get the program to open.

Maurice-thanks very much for getting back-I tried your suggestions but nothing changed. When I went to the control panel option-I didn't even see the same check bax as the .exe process you suggested. Anything I might be doing wrong-thanks. How do I disable the work station service?

Hi Maurice:

I was having a similar problem with PSI v. 2.0 and Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, and your suggestion to start the Workstation service (Start | All Programs | Administrative Tools | Services | Workstation) corrected my problem with the PSI interface not displaying correctly. I have now changed the Startup Type of this service from Disabled to Automatic (Delayed).

I may have had a slightly different problem than JSBSC with my interface. When my Workstation service was disabled, the PSI icon loaded into the system tray but the PSI interface was nothing but a blank window. After leaving my computer alone for about 5 or 10 minutes, a pop-up message appeared over the system icon tray informing me that a scan had completed and reported my score. That's when I realized that the program was actually scanning in the background and that the problem was related to the display of the interface.

That's exactly what mine is doing. The icon in my tray says that I am at 92%. However when I followed your steps to ensure the work station is running-start all program I do not see administrative tools in order to proceed.

Hi JSBSC:

Sorry, my instructions probably don't work with your Windows XP OS.

If I remember correctly, you should be able to view your Windows XP services from the Control Panel (Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services | Workstation). If that doesn't work, try searching for the word "services" (without the quotes) in Windows Help and Support.

OK, just uninstalled Secunia completely, cleaned it out of the registry, did a disc cleanup and then restarted the computer. Reinstalled it and said Yes when I was asked if I wanted to start the program. It was then blocked and stopped by MS data execution prevention. Anyone have any idea about telling Windows to stop doing this?

You could try making an exception for Secunia under the data execution prevention advanced settings or turn off data execution prevention for programs other than the Windows OS itself.

I did #2 "Go to where you installed the PSI (Probably C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI), right-click PSI.exe, go to the Compatability tab, and set a check at 'Turn off advanced text services for tihs program'"
It worked for me Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 SP3

Hi Maurice,

I had the same issue. I installed a new Secunia PSI 2.0 on my PC running Windows XP SP3, but it's NOT activated. Install was successful, but the blank window appeared only :'(

I tried to change the Workstaion service on the MMC, and PSI 2.0 now works! Thanks for your advices.

Merry Christmas!

Yep, already tried that. Set it to run for essential essential Window s programs and services only. No effect. Then set it to run for all programs apart from those I except. Still nothing. Going to give up and un-install Secunia soon if I can't sort it out.

Thanks for the link. Just tried to install that after uninstalling the newer version and cleaning up. The older version won't launch now either. Wish I'd left the version I had on here originally alone now as it worked perfectly well.

I give up.

Hello garynortheast
To recap... you had PSI v 1.5.0.2 running perfectly well. Update to v 2.0 was not as expected. Now, you cannot get back to 1.5.0.2

Please don't give up...yet
support@secunia.com

Your efforts / experience should be worthy of direct attention from Secunia.
Maybe just give up until after the Holidays. Hopefully, Secunia will address everyone's issues.

I had the same problem with PSI 2 and windows xp sp3.
the problem is bypassed by turning off advanced text services. Yet I need those services for most of my uses of the computer (as there is no Hebrew support).
Thus while turning off advanced services is a workaround, it is not a solution.

What changes are made to your system and/or system security. I used the various versions of PSI since a long time and never experienced such a thing.

Pre v 2.0 I controlled if / when. Granted 2.0 auto update is user determinate.
I deem a vendor patch as a change on my system. Maybe you don't recall vendor patches that require patches to fix their patches. Happens all the time. I recall vendor updates that cause a stable working system to crash / be unstable / be problematic. Ever had a rootkit. Little hitch hikers that come along with otherwise benign code.
As you have used PSI for a long time then changes have been made to your system. Any patch or update or just running an app makes changes / leaves tracks.
Every mouse click leave a remnant on your system.
Writing this message makes changes to my system. Running a PSI scan leaves AppData tracks.

Thank you, it worked for me.

You have to follow the instructions offered and do a little searching, the "text services" is under Advanced in the Languages fields... Seek and ye shall find.

OK, maybe you are an expert but I am just an average home user and have, as
far as I can remember, never seen an adverse effect of PSI on my system or system security. What you tell me is far beyond my knowledge and experience. Maybe one of the experts like Maurice can explain more about this. I have no
reason to worry about PSI.

Well, now I am back to where I started. I just tried to open the program and I get the same brief white window and then it closes again. I also noticed that neither my c or d drive is working either which I have know idea if one has anything to do with the other.

Could you please expand on your comment that "neither my c or d drive is working either"?

Are you referring to a problem that only occurs when PSI is running, or is this a new symptom that has nothing to do with PSI?

I tried all of the recommendations mentioned but still the splash window won't load on my XP Professional SP3 PC. The new 2.0 software uploaded OK but the splash window flashes and then disappears. The Secunia icon in the Task bar tray is a grey colour instead of the usual red colour but the status still shows (once the cursor is over the icon) that the software is operating. i.e. Secunia PSI 99% Secunia System Score.

My old Secunia software has worked perfectly for many years but this new release is causing me (and many others) plenty of problems. Hope Secunia Support personnel will be able to help us solve this problem early in the New Year.

I have no idea wether one issue has anything to do with the other. Now both my d/e drives are either corrupt or missing-code 39. Just noticed that yesterday. I am not blaming drive issue on the 2.0, just wondering. Am going to have to get a tech in here regardless and will see if he can't fix the 2.0 failure to launch issue as well. Thanks again for your timely response-Happy New Year.

I too am having the same problem with the splash window not opening. I installed the new Secunia today after many years with an older version.

I looked for a compatability tab as per instruction 2) but couldn't find one. Then looked for "Languages" in instruction 3) but couldn't find that either.

I checked Workstation and it is on automatic.

My score is 93%.

I'm using Windows XP

Take a look here for a solution. Works for version 2 and the affected version of 1.5.0.2 (there is more than one 1.5.0.2 - go figure).

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/624...

As an alternative I recently installed Microsoft EMET 2.00, which seems to have permanently cured the problem with no need for further workarounds

OK-I tried removing the handwriting programs and 2.0 loaded and works. I will have to wait and see if the issue comes back up in a few days as before, but thanks for that link info. Hopefully it is a permanent fix. I am at 98% right now with one fix a microsoft update that I will allow to automatically update. However,I have an end of life fix for adobe shockwave player 10, that i have updated, but secunia still has recognized. I know you sometimes need to run the program again, but it still doesn't recognize that I did the update.

This will fix Shockwave.
SHOCKWAVE

Before starting to fix Adobe Shockwave do U really require it? Windows works perfectly without this programme which may have been pre installed on the PC at the time of purchase.

If not required just uninstall it completely. If you do have a requirement read on:

1. Uninstall Shockwave for your OS from the clearly marked link here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates...

2. Reboot to clear out any left over ocx files.

3. Rescan using PSI. Are there any outstanding files that are insecure? These should be cleared out before proceeding to serial 4.

Note 1: At this stage,if PSI finds any elements of Shockwave in the C:\i386 folder or on any drive other than C that is an OEM reinstallation partition (normally D drive) or a drive U use solely to backup your work U can safely create an ignore rule.

Note 2: The path on the C Drive to any remaining insecurity is important. Does it point to the Shockwave Player or another Adobe product that has a Flash element? If it points to Shockwave right click on the file(s) & delete them. If it points elsewhere reinstalling Shockwave will not necessarily clear the problem.

4. Reinstall Shockwave from here:
http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

5. If you wish to test your new Shockwave Player the link is here:

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/

EMET facilitates applying Win OS security technologies to older programs that may not have newer security technologies. Typical candidates for such protection include Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6, which are aging products but still widely used. Those products lack some newer security technologies found in Windows 7 and IE 8. EMET 2.0 might also be used to help protect third-party applications w unpatced vulnerabilities.

2) Go to where you installed the PSI (Probably C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI), right-click PSI.exe, go to the Compatability tab, and set a check at 'Turn off advanced text services for tihs program'

This one worked for me. Thanks.
I am using XP pro with SP 3.

Take a look here for a solution. Works for version 2 and the affected version of 1.5.0.2 (there is more than one 1.5.0.2 - go figure).

OK followed the instructions in this fix and then re-installed latest version. Seems to be working now, it opens up as it should finally and I'm currently running a scan.

We'll see how it goes over the next few days.

My Secunia PSI.2.0 is now working OK. I tried the advice in the paragraph below and this time also unchecked 'Speech Recognition' along with making sure all of the "Handwriting recognition" option was also unchecked. Not sure if the "Speech Recognition" was the remaining problem but it helped me..........might be worth a try for others.

In Classic view go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Click the Languages Tab and the the Details Button. Scroll through the list of installed languages and their subcomponents. If you have any instances of "Handwriting recognition - Drawing Pad" then simply use the Remove button to take them away (it's just as easy to add them back in using the add button if this doesn't solve the bug on your machine or you realise that you need this component). Click apply and then OK and all of the affected versions of Secunia 1.5.0.2 and the betas should load fine with no further workarounds needed.

I did the same - removed the handwriting option and it's now working.

Thanks for the advice.

I have the same 'end of life' for Shockwave and will probably remove it, but before I do, I'd like to know what it does. If I don't need it, why is it there? My son built my computer from scratch so it wouldn't have been preinstalled (I don't think) so was it an add-on with another Adobe download?

Hi electra121:

Adobe Shockwave is an add-on for your browser that allows you to view animations and other interactive features on web pages that were created with Adobe Director (see http://www.adobe.com/products/shockwaveplayer/ for more information). I uninstalled the Shockwave Player from my computer a few years ago and haven't had any problems.

If you have an old end-of-life version of Shockwave and want to update to the latest version (or if you decide to uninstall Shockwave and ever want to re-install it), it can always be downloaded from http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/.

Maurice Joyce has posted excellent instructions in this thread (posted 02-Jan-2011) on the correct procedure for updating Shockwave.

Hi,

I'm not sure how it's fixed it as it wasn't installed with this intention. Basically I installed EMET a couple of days before version 2 of PSI was released. I've suffered this bug with the betas and version 1.5.0.2 but couldn't replicate it with version 2, hence hunch that EMET has fixed the problem. Again a hunch but I think EMET alters DEP functionality for XP. I've got it set to 'Application Opt in' via the EMET gui.

I had the same problem with the splash screen disappearing after installing Secunia 2.0. After applying this fix:

2) Go to where you installed the PSI (Probably C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI), right-click PSI.exe, go to the Compatability tab, and set a check at 'Turn off advanced text services for tihs program'

the program worked fine.
Hope this helps!!

Thanks for this. I was getting frustrated. No 3 held the answer for me and now Secunia is working like it should.
