Hi,

Using Secunia PSI 2.0.0.1003

Following a scan the scan data page shows a message (in red) saying:

Important Note: "Microsoft Update" not found

in the lower right pane of the GUI. This must be wrong as I do have Microsoft Update installed.

Can anyone help with this apparent anomaly?

TIA

Cliff.Rigg

Hi,

Are you aware that there is a difference between Windows Update and Microsoft Update? By default, Windows Update will be installed, but the PSI depends on Microsoft Update
Please see our system requirements page for more detail: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

This exert is what is relevant too you
(unknown source)

Software Requirements

Windows UpdateThe latest version of Microsoft Update (Open the link with Microsoft Internet Explorer). You can determine whether or not you are running the latest version by visiting update.microsoft.com. If you are able to check your system for missing updates through this tool, your system should function properly with the Secunia PSI.

Hope this helps!

Hi E.Peterson,

Thanks for your response.

I have tried as you suggest (Go to update.microsoft.com) and there's no problem. I have never had a problem with updating from the Microsoft site.

The only problem I can see is that Secunia PSI is wrongly reporting missing software.

I'll put up with it, but I can't be the only person this happens with and I'm sure that more reports will be posted here in the future.

Thanks again for the response,

Cliff.Rigg

Hello.
It may not be missing ? It may not have kicked in,,,,???

When updating Microsoft Applications, it is a good idea to keep in mind that some Microsoft Updates do not "kick in" until after a reboot. Therefore, it is recommended to try following this procedure when installing Microsoft Updates:

1) Check Microsoft Update: install all security-related patches
2) Reboot
3) Repeat step 1: repeat step 2 if anything was installed at this step
4) Run a full rescan with the PSI

Hope the foregoing is of some help....regards,

Hi Mogs,

Thanks for the reply.

Believe me when I say I have rebooted (several times) since the last Microsoft Patch Tuesday.

I am aware of this and reasonably knowledgable with respect to computers. I still reckon it's a problem with Secunia but if anyone else knows differently I'd be in their debt.

Cheers Mogs,

Cliff.Rigg

How about trying an upgrade to the latest version psi....they have smoothed out a few wrinkles or got over a few teething problems....might be worth a try ?

Mogs,

Have updated Secunia to 2.0.0.3001 as suggested. Install over the top of the old version went fine.

Ran a scan which shows 100% system score.

Still reckons I ain't got Microsoft Update though :(

Cheers mate,

Cliff.

Presumeably you've rebooted following install....an experienced hand such as yourself. Well, that being the case, hopefully, Secunia staff will have further suggestions in the morning. Good luck anyrate mate.

Is the Windows Update service running?
Which OS are you using?

@ddmarshall:

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 with all patches up to date (100% system score)

Oh, and yes Windows Update Service is running.

I've just tried rescanning and can't get Secunia scan to start...is this a known problem with version 2.0.0.3001?

:(

PSI invokes Windows Update to check for missing Microsoft Updates. I'm guessing that it's encountering an error when it does that and that causes the message that you get.

If you run msconfig and look under the Services tab, what is the status of Windows Update?

That's correct for XP. I forgot they changed the name. There's a few other services which may be involved, but if you've never changed the defaults, I'd wait for Secunia support to come in tomorrow.

@ddmarshall:

Ok, Thanks for trying to help.

I think I'll uninstall version 2.0.0.3001 and reinstall 2.0.0.1003 - at least that version runs scans....
