Hi, I'm using Windows Vista 32bit. Since some days PSI wants to have me to install the patch for KB978542. My Windows Update doesn't show any missed patch, and when I want to install the patch manually I get the message that this patch is not for my OS. How can I tell PSI to ignore this patch? Without solving this it is not possible for me to reach the 100% up-to-date state ;-). Thanks in advance, Jörg |

Hi Maurice, yes, I used this link (but of course for my German Vista I changed the language). I tried it again to be sure - and I received the same message, that this update is not for my system. But nevertheless, thanks for your fast reply, Regards, Jörg |

Very odd. Can U post the path to the problem PSI has found? FINDING A FILE PATH - PSI VERSION 2 From the DASHBOARD page click on SCAN RESULTS. 1. This will list all your programmes with a + to the left of each one. 2. Click the + sign next to the item that U want help with. 3. This will reveal the path under DETECTED INSTANCES. 4. Highlight it then copy (CTRL+C) then paste (CTRL+V)) that path back to the Forum. ALL OTHER PSI VERSIONS To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, use or switch to the ADVANCED interface, then : 1 Click on the + sign of the programme to "expand' it. 2 Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file. (Copy (CTRL+C) & paste (CTRL+V)) the Installation Path of the file back to the Forum. Hi Maurice, sorry, it took a bit more time to answer, my boss wanted me to work on my projects... ;-) As you said, I copied the following out of PSI: Microsoft Windows Vista 1 Insecure Microsoft Update Detected Instances: Microsoft Security Patches Not Installed: KB978542 You can double click this row for additional information and options. As you can see there is no path under Detected Instances. Regards, Jörg PS: I found the possibility to say 'ignore program': is this only for this patch, or for the whole program (in this case the Vista OS)? |

No - it will only ignore this one issue. I would leave this thread open - I do not have a Vista OS handy to do some tests but there are Vista helpers on this Forum who may be able to chip in with their knowledge of this hotfix. -- Maurice Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit OS HP Intel Pentium i7 IE 10 for Windows 7 SP1 16GB RAM |

Thanks Maurice, for your help. I will ignore the patch, hopefully I really don't need it. ;-) Bye, Jörg |

@opamoon Here is some info and poss. work around for this patch It appears to be for MS Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail. and is a critical security patch correcting a buffer overflow problem . Therefore, if you are using MS Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail. I would figure out a way to get the patch. http://itsvista.com/2010/05/kb978542/ Have you gone to your windows update and checked "restore hidden updates" It is poss. that it was downloaded and not installed. This might be the problem of why MS says you don't need it along with the fact that you are not using Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail. . -- Windows Home Basic-Service Pack 2 Dell AMD Athlon 64x2 Processor 4000+ 2.10Ghz 2Memory 32 Bit Firefox21.0 Avast -Spybot-Malwarebytes Sandboxie IE 9-seldom |

Hi, back again, it's Monday... @mogs, @puget1: Thanks for your hints, but it doesn't help. I never used (and will not use) Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail, so this patch is not as relevant as it looks like. @Maurice: I tried to ignore this patch, but without a path parameter ignoring is not possible. @all: Good news: now my system is 100% up-to-date. Don't know why, this morning when I started my laptop first it showed me the missed patch, but after a new scan I got my 100% :-) I also ran some scans last week, on different days, but it didn't help. Maybe the laptop needed a longer break... ;-) So thanks for your help, cu, Jörg |

Good News for U. That sometimes happens with Microsoft hotfixes. A final boot/ restart appears to have solved it. U can normally tell by using MBSA - it will tell U if it is "stuck in the pipeline" awaiting a reboot. MBSA is here for future reference: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/cc1849... It is the oracle of all things Microsoft security/hotfixes. -- Maurice Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit OS HP Intel Pentium i7 IE 10 for Windows 7 SP1 16GB RAM |
