Quicktime 6.X was installed by a program I installed for my grandkids. PSI has detected this program as a threat. I downloaded the Quicktime Installer for Ver. 7.55.90.70 but it will not install. I get a message: Installer encountered errors before the requested operation could be completed.
Uninstalled the 6.X through Control Panel. Tried to install 7.X but get the same thing.
Reinstalled the program to get 6.X back on and then tried to run the update from it. It detected numerous updates, but when I click to install them, I got another error about not being able to run the updater.
I tried to update again and it finally worked. It is now ver. 6.5.2 but I still can't run the 7.X installer. Same error. |

You are not by chance running windows 2000? I don't think that quicktime is supported for Windows 2000 anymore, if that is the case:

You need to uninstall it. Follow everything below and it will work.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Now run the utility (“Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up”), select any QuickTime entries in the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, and then click “Remove”.
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)
7. Restart your computer.
Next, we'll try to get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
Go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
If the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. Does it launch properly now? |

That reply form Mike looks pretty good...do either of you use Norton 360 or NIS by any chance? |

Yes, I am using Norton 360.
Mike505,
I do not have itunes on my computer. (I really don't want it.) Can I not just download and install the new Quicktime?
Thanks. |

I spent 5 hours the other day trying to uninstall quicktime but it worked with the info I posted. Yes you can install quicktime only.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/
You can also install an older version if you wish from:

Sorry should have added this to the last post. If you want to just remove everything.
Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Now run the utility (“Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up”), select any QuickTime entries in the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, and then click “Remove”.
Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and Delete the entire folder.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.) You can find them by clicking on list view and they will move to alphabetical order. Scroll to the Quicktime files and delete them.
7.Go into Add/Remove programs and remove quicktime as well as Itunes.
8. Then you can install quicktime without Itunes if you wish. |

Mike,
Downloaded and ran the Windows Installer Cleanup.
Only 1 problem....NO Quicktime entries. NO Apple entries. NO iTunes entries.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,

I think I hate quicktime.
After deleting the program folders for quicktime / Itunes and removing the items out of the system 32 folder did you try to install it again? I am lost on any other ideas. |

I had a similar sort of problem with another application, and what I had to do to delete the leftovers and re-install it might possibly work in your case.
Might take a bit of work.
It involves searching the registry and the computer for anything Apple, and anything with quicktime in the name, and deleting (almost*)anything found.
Before doing this, you should make a backup of your registry. A very good program for this is Erunt, which can be set to auto-backup the registry. Get it here: http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/...
* Certain registry items should not be deleted. They may have no relationship to what you have installed yourself, but may be built-in to the OS. Unfortunately I don't know a clear way to describe how you can know what is definitely safe to delete. You might want to Google a registry tutorial to get an idea before starting.
What I found is that what's called "Legacy drivers" prevented my program from being ale to be re-installed. I had to change the permissions of them before I could delete the entries. Worked, though. |

After installing and running Secunia for the first time today, the scan reported that I had a problem with Quicktime version 6, although I had earlier this morning downloaded the latest version from FileHippo.com - why did not Secunia recognise the latest version? |

Just thought I would update this thread. I just went to apple.com and downloaded the Quicktime Installer again for version 7.6. For whatever reason this time it loaded/updated my ver. 6.x successfully. Now have a 100% rating at last.
Thanks to those who tried to help. Don't know what happened this time. I didn't do anything differently. |
